Little ELB - 68" - 56# @ 29" => Retillered 54# @ 29"
« on: February 27, 2021, 11:21:24 am »
Hey, it's a looong time since I posted a bow  :) but today the grey weather inspired me to take a few pics of my recent English longbow. It took me a while to bring myself to sacrifice a piece of yew for the bucket list here. I still couldn't bring myself to put hornnocks on - I had already ordered them but they were so ugly and heavy that I finally mounted yew-nocks. To my surprise this bow shoots quite well and accurate. Still not sure weather to scrape some a little more on the top limb...but time (or maybe you  :)) will tell...
Thanx for watching  (-S

[I did not post this in the English Warbow section, because its not a warbow - but I will soon make one - its on the bucket list too]

Here we have the retillered pics

This nocks are interesting! I love it! Interesting how the tiller looks different between those pics. Looks like a great bow in any case! Love the look of those small pin knots on the back in yew.

Nicely done. Great looking bow.

Thanx  guys :)
Yes Ryan, tiller pics always cheat a little, little change of angles change image significantly...the one before that barn is probably the more true one. Observing this one I thougt about scraping a little inbetween mid and outers,  both limbs. Maybe check on the tiller tree... On the other hand, if Badger and Del liking it as is, it maybe stay as is  :)
I will chrono it when the sun is back.
Del, the corners are just for that little fist on your eye 🙃 it took me a lots of work to make them

Yes I'd work on the mid to outers a little. More so on the upper limb.
Your nocks are certainly interesting! A good talking point :)

...so I retillered a little today. Looking fine for me now.
Put some arrows through the chrono too. At 28" draw and 52# it propells the 525gn arrow averaging 170fps. The 380gn arrow does 180+fps. Thats fine too for me too, exactly what I was expecting for the 10gpp and a bit low for the light arrow. Using a badly oversized 16strand b55 string....
Putting it to the collection now  :)
cheers

Wow, those might be my favorite nocks I have seen. I know what you mean about the horn nocks, sometimes they just look too big and bulbous for me, just personal preference.

These yew nocks just look so elegant, they are reminiscent of a piece on a chessboard, and I like the way the grooves come together, makes it look like a little fleur de lise icon.

This style would for sure look great made out of horn too, maybe some white horn on black horn to mimic the sapwood/heartwood.

EDIT: fixed yew nocks to horn nocks

;D difficult argueing about matters of taste  ;D

the weight and shape of these hornnocks just repelled me - no need to mount more than one ounce of useless horn to my tips.

I have easy access to cowhorn and will make tips myself then for the warbow project on the bucket list - I promise  8) LOL

cheers

I think the mistake people make with those bought in horn nocks is thinking they are a finished shape.
I agree they are hideously bulky, but I'd treat 'em as unfinished blanks and rasp about 30% of the material away once it's mounted on the bow.
