Aspen arrows?
« on: May 08, 2008, 12:47:54 pm »
I have seen a couple of posts here mentioning aspen arrows. The stuff grows everywhere in the mountains here, and I was wondering if anyone has used the wood extensively for arrows. Being a relative of birch, I would think it would make a great arrow.

Any thoughts?

Pat has a really nice looking aspen arrow made by Art Butner. We have some bigtooth aspen growing here, but I've never tried it. BTW, aspen isn't related to birch, it's in the willow family.

I have an aspen arrow that Art Butner made for me. He really likes aspen for arrows I believe.     Pat

Pat is it from split timber or a shoot? Lots of quaking & bigtooth aspen up here. may have to try some.

I believe it was split stock. This one has a walnut footed nock and pile end.   Pat

First year growth would be quite wimpy. Second year growth is worth trying. I've never worked with aspen so I can't say for sure.     Pat

Thanks for the pics, pat. Nice arra. Hillbilly is correct, it's in the willow family, but is also related to poplar, which makes good arrows too.

Shoots wont work unless your aspen is different than ours by a long shot.  Justin
