Bald eagle
« on: April 09, 2022, 09:28:11 pm »
Here's a bald eagle nesting a few miles from my place.
It's the closest my camera would zoom in.
Their nest is by a huge pond.
I was harvesting some more dogwoods a few miles from me along the road.

That's a big nest!  We see them a good bit in the winter here, but I haven't seen a nest.

Yes it's not that common this far into the interior of the country. It seems that they are definitely not on the endangered list for quite some time now.
Their huge nest I gather gets used and added to years after.
Special time of year in Iowa.New life beginning every where.Calves, colts, and all kinds of wildlife.

Their role here is more as a carrion type bird much like the turkey vulture.

We have a pretty good population of them around here.

I have a big dead cottonwood tree at the end of my ravine that seems to be their favorite tree stand. There’s almost always at least one and often two in that tree.

They let me go right under the tree with my tractor. If I’m in my pickup I can’t get within 250 yards.

They definitely know my tractor

I saw the first eagles here just last year but it was a male, female and juvenile so that's a good sign. I saw an osprey this morning.

Cool....During the winter here any big cottonwoods along a paved road with a road killed deer on the shoulder will have 7 or 8 of these bald eagles waiting for traffic to subside to pick at the deer.
I should of took pictures of that but my hurry to get errands done did'nt allow it.
A friend of mine that runs a body shop out in the country is an advid deer hunter. His boys and himself throw the guts and bones from their deer out in the middle of the stubble field a few blocks from their shop.I counted close to 25 eagles of varying age there one time.
Did that once here too and within a day 3 or 4 eagles were there.
There is a large lake...Lake Rathbun around 15 miles from me.

Probably about 15 years ago now. I trapped raccoon and muskrats.

I put the carcasses out in my field. When the crows find them everything finds them.

One morning I could see something on the carcasses but couldn’t tell what it was. When I got closer I found a bald eagle on the carcass. A large hawk about 10 yards away and a dozen seagulls about 30 yards away.

Was no question about the pecking order

I was just out front cleaning up a piece of equipment and the resident/local eagle did a low pass overhead.  :)
