Ryan Gill uses a short draw and long arrows. With a very stiff bow. So in those cases, arrow spine is not as sensitive, as a lot of the arrow is already pointing downrange at release. The arrow needs to be stiff enough not to snap the fletching end off when you release. Also, he uses cane, which is tapered and has unique attributes. So for such things, spine is less critical to shot placement, when compared to long-draw, short as possible lower weight bows.

Spine is extremely important in any kind of bow or even an atlatl. It might be arguable as to how far off you can be and still maintain a decent pattern. The closer to center cut your bow is the stiffer the spine it will tolerate. I like to stay within about 5# spine of what I find works best. There are a lot of articles on line about tuning and finding the correct spine. Well worth your time if you plan to stay in archery.

I guess I don’t know what Ryan actually said, but I agree with Badger.

Spine is very important for any bow.

Like Tuomo said. Bare shaft test. It will really open your eyes.

Honestly I feel that the type of hunting we do it is possibly even more important. We need good penetration and efficient arrow flight. We need an arrow that straightens out very quickly for close up shots.

I have a lot of respect for Ryan. As stated he is a very capable primitive hunter. I know he has done testing of many different primitive weapons, points and techniques.

I could be wrong but I’m guessing he was misunderstood.

As long as you have perfect arrow flight bare shaft. Spine isn’t important
