Flip'n tips - Opinions
« on: October 06, 2025, 07:44:09 pm »
So, I put a slight flip in the tips of the bow I am currently working on. When I took one of the ends out of the caul I notice there was a small crack that formed right at the apex of the curve.  I have since filled the crack with water thin super glue, and started to lightly work it with a scraper. The crack is getting smaller, I think it might actually go away if I continue to work on it, but don't want to thin that area out too much. Will this be an issue if I can't get all of the crack scraped away?

Fill it with thin super glue and ignore it. Happens all the time to me. I learned to keep them thicker than needed so I can grind away any cracks that open on the belly like that. Also, I learned that boiling the tips which I keep at a dimension on 1 inch wide, .5 inches thick, for 45 minutes allows me to recurve them with very little cracking. Additionally I round my edges so they wont lift a splinter and try to have one solid ring on the belly to aid in a clean bend as well. Lastly I use an old wood saw as a metal strap to clamp over the belly as I bend it to keep any splinters pressed down.

It's a possibility! Most of my knowledge is inspired by what I leaned here :)

EXACTLY like that! i clam the saw tip to the bow tip and the form, and push the saw handle instead of the bow, to force the bow onto the form to recurve my tips.

I usually try and get the tips to 1 ring on the belly side if possible, my form for flipping the tips are single so I do 1 at a time, I put the form in the vice and then mount the tip in it, I add a weight to the opposite end of the bow and heat the tip I want to flip slowly and let gravity and the weight pull it down, rarely boil, sometimes get a little check but not usually, I leave the tip a little thick and can most times scrap it out. I will try and put up some pictures when I get home to maybe make it clearer. Pappy

I do like Pappy does by using heat and let gravity bend the tips. For more severe bends like for recurves I used to use dry heat then use super glue in any cracks and add overlays if the cracks are drastic.
From now on, any drastic bending I do will be steamed or boiled first.
