my wife asked me to make her a pink bow that no guy would want to shoot :) We settled on a pink fade in the bamboo like a sunset so hers is named "sunset'. Its boo backed ipe with an ipe power lam and a stripe of maple in the handle. Elk antler ovelays. Hers is les than 3/4" at the widest and pulls an even 40#@26" 64" ntn. by far the thinnest bow ive made. The next bow is mine its a r/d tri lam boo back, maple core, and ipe belly. also with elk overlays. It is real sweet and fast. I was actualy trying for a bit more poundage but the early weight fooled me and it gains very gradual in the draw. it pulls a hair over 50# @ 27" 66" ntn 1 1/8 at fades tapering to a little under 3/8" tips. Thanks for looking :)

Very nice work Jesse. I like how you rounded the edges on the risers. Looks better than the one you had at the classic last year that was all square. I especially like the grip on your wife's bow. The tips look nice too. Nice pictures also..... 8)

GREAT LOOKING BOWS ! look like a couple of meat makers for sure.. Hawk a/ho
-
Nice bows. You could have used Bubinga, it's a shade of pink
-
Thanks guys
Ryan I never forgot your advice to round my corners more and have been getting better at it ;) Marc good idea. I made these from the same board.
I got the ipe from Rich Saffold and the boo for mine came from KnightD.
-
Those are a couple of really nice bows. Very nice work. Man it still looks like you have plenty of winter up there.
-
Hi,
Very nice bows!..I have my boo and ipe ready to start one...may I ask what finish you used?

Beautiful looking bows, Jesse. The contrast between the wood is striking. The deep cut in shelves are so smooth and rounded they look like they are molded. Sweet!
-
Thanks again :) Yeah Plenty of winter left. Were going to get 10" this week.
Catahoula good luck on your bow. Design of the two I think the straight profile is the way to go. I used spar urethane on my wifes and it took literally 3 weeks to dry so I wont use that on ipe again no matter how much I degrease. On mine I used a quick spray of wax free shellac after degreasing and topcoated with a few coats of water based spar which dries in one hour and you can re coat in two. I cant say how it will hold up because its the first time I tried this but so far so good. Hope that helps

Great looking bows Jesse. And I like the handles and lams
-
Quite the pair and the bows look great! We'll look at them for BOM fun this weekend.
-
That is a priceless set of bows. Good work. Justin

Thanks for the comments. Justin that made my day :)

;D Those are beauties Jesse. Your bow has to be very fast, with the low string angle, and how the limbs don't go to "straight" at full draw obviously gives your bow a very fat f/d curve. This is good naturally, and you were smart not to try for more poundage with the limb outline, unbraced profile and
composition being a tri-lam which didn't leave much belly wood.
Too often in this situation the bowyer has the strong desire to get the heavier bow from a given amount of wood, and this is the perfect example of getting the faster bow with less poundage 50# than it would have had at 60# since it would have been under built for the poundage and taken more set.
I have a few bows going from that same board so I am thrilled to see how it looks with that nice finish you put on it.. I got more wood and will pm you soon about it.

Very nice! Pics ta boot. All top shelf stuff.Congrats on some fine work.
-
Very nice bows Jesse. I especially like the looks of hers. From what I hear, that Boo/Ipe is a fast combo.
If I ever make anything like that, I'd like to try a Boo backed, ERC core and Ipe belly. In theory it should be sweet. ???
-
Very nice bows Jesse.
-
Those both came out real nice !! I really like the contrast between the wood's..
-
these are 2 really nice bows!
bet that r/d is fast, isn't it!?
f.
-
Beautiful bows Jesse, very nice job on both, hope to see them up close in a couple of months.
If they shoot like the one you had last year you got
to winners there.

She's mighty pretty Jesse...and her bow look's great too! ;D Very nice work on both of bows. I really like the finish work, and those elk tips look good...Pappy just got half a elk rack so maybe he'll share. I like your wifes grip a lot, and the laminating job on yours really sets it off. Bet they both shoot sweet! ;)
-
They both look fantastic Jesse, very nicely done and great attention to details.
Really like the grip on your wifes bow its very distinctive. Can't hardly wait to shoot them at Pappy's :)
Even the pink one :o ;) :D Looks like spring is there down yer way Jesse ;)
-
Thanks guys much appreciated.
Rich and Medicineweel yeah it is fast so Im happy ;D. Shooting 50# is actually kinda nice. One advantage to this bow is it's very light physical weight. Saw filer I would think the erc would make a nice core being so light. If I were to make another I might taper the center core so tillering would be easier.
Thanks Pappy see ya in spring. Thanks David ,Thanks Timo, Thanks Pat, Thanks Greg my wife also thanks you for the compliment. Thanks Dana you have to wrestle with Angie for it. She can be tough ;D notice shes not having much trouble with the 40# :D
-
Nice bows Jesse ! I hope to see them in person sometime this year !
-
Beautiful bows, and excellent craftsmanship! I really like that color contrast in woods, nice job.
-
Howdy Jesse,
"Craftmenship", "Sculpted handle", "Boo/Ipe is a fast combo", "I really like the contrast between the woods", "the elk overlays"..., you have a doubler, a couple of really nice bows with the right amount of whistles and bells, and that unique arrow rest makes it look fast.
Thank you for sharing your bows and bow making skills,
Canoe

Thanks John. Cant believe we haven't met up yet. Thanks Hrogthar. Thanks Canoe much appreciated. I dont know about skills. Im just learning from the people on here that help me out.
-
Not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but they are SWEET! I really like the handles and the color contrast too. Great job! :)
-
Fantastic looking bows, each one is more beautiful than the last!
Ipe / Bamboo is one of the finest combinations for laminated bows.
-
I love those bows man! especially yours! gorgeous profile and handle, well done!
my first bbi is now in the make and it doesn't look nearly as beautyfull as yours ;)

Thank you very much Brownhillboy. Thanks Nickf yours will look great just put a little TLC into it. Cooper thanks. I was going to use your handle wrap design because I really like it but I didnt have the right leather for it. Maybe later I will add it to mine.
-
jesse, one question: is the R/D's centerlam tapered or parallel?? couldn't find that in the text
thanks, f.
-
jesse, one question: is the R/D's centerlam tapered or parallel?? couldn't find that in the text
thanks, f.
Its parallel. A little under 1/8" thick all the way and very thin bamboo. The ipe got very thin but It can take a lot. If I make another I will use a tapered center to eliminate the possibility of getting to thin on the belly although the way I did it made for super light weight outer limbs.
-
WOW!!! Those are just a super pair of bows. My wife also shoots with me, and I feel very lucky for it. I'm glad your wife shares your interest. Well done!
-
Super nice bows. You should do a build along.Very smooth and clean.
-
Thanks adb. Yeah I am blessed with a great wife that likes me to make bows and she likes working on them a bit too though she hasn't made one yet. She is really good at pointing out spots that need work ;D Its so much more fun when we get to shoot together.
Super nice bows. You should do a build along.Very smooth and clean.
Thanks tradrick I did a build along on one about a year back which showed how I stumbled through it ;D I am not a pro to be teaching but I might do another because it helps me learn when people see how I'm doing things and say hey that's not the best way. The people on here are full of little tips and tricks to help out.
-
Great pair of bows, Jesse-both look excellent. Love that silhouette sunset full-draw photo, too.
-
Thanks for the compliment Hillbilly.
-
beautifull elegant bows , I really like the design of the r/d with the fancy handle, I'm inspired to make another boo bkd ipe

Great looking bows Jesse. Hope to see you at the Classic
Thanks Bear. It should be another good time.

Jesse,
Impressive work. A friend of mine makes a lot of IPE English D longbows and those two you got there look great as well. That style you applied looks good. I really like that IPE wood. In fact I would like to attempt my second bow from IPE and Vine Maple in an English D style longbow.
Can you tell me if that is a natural back set to the tips or did you apply some special work to get that? I know IPE is a strong wood from handling it a bit and was wondering what you did to come up with that.
Thanks,
Chep

Thanks Chep All pieces start out straight. They are glued together and formed into the curved shape while the glue its still wet. Let the glue dry and it holds the shape.
Here is a pic to help explain.
