Title: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on December 16, 2014, 12:58:15 am
I thought I'd better make this official.

March 20, 21 and 22, 2015 at Moon Tree Farm, Richmond, KY

This is a small gathering as bowyer events are concerned, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it again this year.

Activities include bow building, arrow making, knapping and 3D course.  And a lot of bull being spread around.

Dinners Friday and Saturday evening will be:
Smoke Wild boar one evening and Venison Chili the other.
Side items are appreciated.
RSVP will help a lot in the food preparation, like there's ever been a shortage of food.  haha

Camping can be set up in the yard with drop cords for electricity.  Some housing is available.

I look forward to seeing the founding members and meeting new folks.
Dave

Count me in!!  I can bring a deer hind quarter if that will help out, or I will have the Warden to make some desserts.  ;D  Can I crash in the house again? :-\

I'll be there for sure.  I can bring something for the dinners.  I might get the wife to make something for me to bring.  Thanks for hosting this Dave.  I always have a great time at the Moontree farm.  I wouldn't mind crashing in the cottage if there is room.  I can bring an air mattress and sleep on the floor if need be.

I'm glad to see so many of the Founding Fathers of the Moon Tree Gathering have already committed to the event.

I do have one goal for this event and that is to spend more time in the bow shop than I do cooking.  So let's keep meals simple this year.  Clint I love doing the wood oven pizzas, but it was real time consuming last year with the wind and rain.  I started the fire at 10:30; the last pizza came out of the oven at 4:30.  If by some chance I get my "new design" oven built by then we'll do pizzas.

Greg, are you thinking of smoking the venison hind quarter?  I could set up the smoker in front of the workshop so it would be easier to monitor the flame and temperature while still socializing in the workshop.

I shot a wild boar last a couple weeks ago with my Ruger Blackhawk.  I was thinking some BBQ pork chops would make a good entre one evening.

Last year there were some requests for clay pigeon shooting for this year's firearm portion of the event.  Are we wanting to plan that this year?

Greg and Clint, your indoor reservations are booked. :)

No worries on the pizza oven Dave.  We can eat fast and easy this year.  I would be interested in some clay pigeon shooting.  Do you still have the mountain man beard?  I thought PatB was there when I pulled up last year.

Clint, I have beard.  I grow one every year starting the first of August in preparation of deer season. I usually shave it in January and I usually keep it trimmed.  Last year I let it grow and kept it for the gathering.  I imagine that I'll shave it before March this year.

Dave I would love to, but this year I will have ZERO out of state shoots to attend. I just have too many other family deals going that eat up my vacation time. But, one day I will be down. Maybe I can catch a ride with Dan-O one of these times.

Bill, are you any good shooting left handed?  I haven't shot any clays in several years but we used to have a big shoot every new years day.  We would play a point game and I liked putting guys out with a left handed shot.  Just to rub a little salt in the wound  >:D
Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering

Bill bring your thrower.  I have one, but it's always fun to launch multiple birds.  Bill, I have a couple .410's if you want to use them.  There's a H&R Snake Charmer.  You can shoot it like a pistol if you like.  Oh, and there's my Mother's Steven bolt action, but it's really a single shot  most of the time.  OH OH I got the gun for you--a T/C New Englander .12 guage muzzleloading shotgun.  On second thoughts I might have to use that one.  We can share.  :)  .410 shells are too expensive to shoot anyhow.

Pearly, I hear you my year has been sort like that, also.

Dave,
I'll bring the thrower and some clays....28 ga. is tough enough, thanks for the offer but I'll pass on the 410.... :)  but now that smooth bore smoke pole in 12ga may be just the ticket unless were shooting doubles.. ;)

You will pick up on it real quick Greg.  Do you have a shotgun to bring?  If not we can share my 12g 870.  I have a single shot 20g I can bring to if anybody wants to shoot it.  I think its a youth model.

In 12 gauges I have 870 Special Field and a Winchester Ranger 120.  In 20 gauges I have Remington 1100 and a Rossi side by side.  I think we can find a shotgun for someone to shoot.

I don't think we have had any kids there yet but I don't see any problem with bringing them.  Its a great group of guys that show up.  Maybe Dave will give the official word on it.

Are you close by Gutshot?

Gutshot, I will agree with Osage Outlaw.  So, far there's not been any kids here, but I don't see a problem with them attending.  None of us real "potty mouths" unless a bomb goes off in the front yard, then you might want to cover their ears before my wife steps out on the porch.  haha  Long story, we'll tell you when you get here. haha  We do drink a few beers, but no one gets out of hand.

And the kids are welcome to shoot the 3D course and clay pigeons.  The shoots of informal, no one really keeps score.  But, if they shoot better than I do, I might have to assign them dish washing duties.  Just kiddin'

I am hoping to make it. I was wondering if anyone was going to bring any hedge staves that would be older than a year old to trade ?  I have about 20 myself, I can bring some but all cut less than 4 months. I might not be able to make a good bow yet,  but I have been cutting some really good  osage. Joe from Ky.

It's great you can make it Joe.  Staves and snake skins hmmm?

Seeds (with egg on my face):  If you remember last year my tractor had a cracked block.  Well, I couldn't get it replaced until mid-July.  By the time I got caught up on necessary bush hogging it was too late for me to plan any food plots.  I didn't even get winter wheat planted.  So, I still have all the seeds you gave me last year.  YES they will be planted this season.  I'm going to try to do 2 plantings.  So, don't feel you need to bring seeds for me.  BUT, guys deer like that quail food, too.

I'm sure you could get some help with the tillering.  Dave has a few vises in his bow shop.  There are usually a couple of portable bench vises also.  Hopefully the weather is a little dryer this year so we can work outside to.

I have a piece of 8" pvc we could use to flesh a hide on.
Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on January 24, 2015, 11:17:00 am
I've tanned probably 20 deer hides.  Most turned out pretty well.  I've not really tried a "fur-on" tan yet.  I have bobcat in the freezer that's been there for 4 to 6 years.  I really need to do something with it.  Tanning a hide is pretty much a 3 week process with the last 8 or 10 days requiring daily attention at least twice a day.  I just have a hard time committing that much time into my schedule.

I, also, have a doe hide from this year, plus a boar skull and buck skull that need attention for a European mount.

What are you tanning, Greg?

Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on January 24, 2015, 11:56:53 am
I have a piece of 8" pvc we could use to flesh a hide on.

I think 8" pvc would be great for fleshing.  I've used 4" pvc in the past.  It works well but you've got to move the hide a lot because of the narrow work surface.  I have 12" pvc pipe 3 foot long; it weighs about 30 pounds.  Actually, I have 4 of them.  Three are being used as deer feeders.

The trick is figuring out how to mount the pipes on a frame so you can create a work station.  I have one with 4" pvc built.  I'm not sure of it's condition.  I haven't used it in about 7 years.  I'll try to get out today, brush the snow off it and take some pictures.  I've been thinking that I need to redesign a fleshing bench.

There seems to a 100 different ways to tan a hide; from the chemical Tandy Leather kit, Tannery in a Box, to egg tanning to brain tanning to using tannin from tree bark.  I've done the Tannery in a Box most of the time.  But, I did an egg tanning on the last set of deer hides.  It worked pretty well, but I still need to smoke them and work them out more.  All in all, I have 8 to 10 deer hides in various stages of completion.  haha

Do we want to do a hide tanning clinic this Gathering?  I am far from being an expert, but we can give it a go if there's interest.  I bet Bill has some tanning experience, also, and maybe Joe??

Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on January 24, 2015, 05:13:42 pm
Ok, seems like we're going to attempt to tan some hides.  I have 3 or 4 deer hides that were salted and have been laying in the shed for years.  The mice love them.  haha.  They're probably on good for raw hide to convert to hide glew.  We'll de-hair those.  I have a hide or two that are in raw hide form that I can start the egg tanning.  Have 3 hides that were egg tanned but not worked (another egg bath and work them would be good for them).  I have a couple egg tanned hides that are pretty soft, that could stand a smokin'.

I will build another fleshing board other than the one shown in the picture below with 4" pvc and make a yoke for the 12" pvc.  I'll build a couple 8' by 8' racks for stretching and smoking the hides.

What you can bring are:
1. eggs if you're doing the egg tan method, or whatever tanning method you might be using.  That's is if you're far enough along with the process to be ready to tan a hide.  Basically, that means the hide has been de-hair if needed and fleshed.

2. Pickle buckets with lids.  These will be needed in the hair removal and tanning.

3. A hide scraping tool.

4. A hand-held belt sander would be nice.  Mine stopped running.  I need to take it apart to see if I revive it again.

5.  Plenty of string to use in the hide stretching.

I'm sure I will think of something else we need.  Let hope for warmer weather.

I've got a fleshing blade I will bring and so so fleshing beam. I used the fleshing blade on my first stave :P  :o. Tanned some mink, muskrat and coons but haven't done it in years.

I'm bringing everything for breakfast casserole this year. Might not be as good as the dollar general buffet that Clint and I went and got.

Someone's going to have to bring a case of that skee or ale8 and pay you for it. Can't find it around here. Maybe Daniel will see this.

Probably bring one or two rocks to beat on.

Shotgun,shells and clays too!

I have a couple coon hides and an otter in the freezer, and a salted elk hide.  I've tanned with Liquitan before, it tanned stiff, because I didn't take the time to work the leather..

I have a fleshing knife and lots of experience skinning and fleshing if anyone needs fur handling advice...

I found a huge chunk of flint the other day, too big to pack... almost the size of a five gallon bucket..

I've done a few skins in the past, some with hair and some without.  I live in a subdivision and when I did a couple without hair, I had deer hair all over the back yard and the neighbor's.  ::)  The hair on ones went real well but it's been about 15 years since I did it.  It will be good to get back to it....I'll pitch in and help with anything I can.

Tracy, the breakfast casserole sounds good, I was thinking the same thing and thought about bringing the dutch ovens and making some biscuits and sausage gravy one morning.

I am only trapping in 3 areas with just a very few traps out.  I don't have time to check a lot before work.  I think I have 4 or 5 traps out.  Very good spots though.  The 2 bobcats and 2 of the coyotes came from the same spot.  There are plenty of trappers that catch waaay more fur than me, but I am tickled with my catch so far.

You guys got me fired up for this event. I know a little about tanning. I've been doing my own taxidermy work for the last 6 years and have tanned out many of pelts and deer hides. Even boiled those nasty skulls out. The only thing I'm not into is skinning snakes. Is there a scheadule or time frame for certain events on certain days or does every thing kinda goes with the flow. Thanks

Other than fleshing knives and fleshing beams and buckets, what other items do we need?  What are the best tanning solutions to use for soft tanning?  I think I understand the prep work, just not the actual tanning itself.

I use Mckenzie ultimate acid for pickeling then Mckenzie tanning cream then On pelts I put leather oil on them then work them over a 1" square bar until they loosen up and dry. If you don't want rug type pelt then I put them on stretching wire frames

Gutshot, I'm looking forward to learning from you.  I've only used Tandy's Tannery in a box and egg solution.  I've never really done a hair-on hide.

Greg, to remove hair I used to use the stuff in the Tannery in a Box.  The last few deer hide I did, I used ashes and water solution.  It take 3 to 5 days for the hair to loosen up nicely.  The ash solution does leave hide a bit gray, but by the time you work the hide out it's off white/cream white, plenty clean enough for smokin'.  The trick for a soft hide, in my limited experience, has been to work it, work it and work it more. If you start with a wet hide and work it until it's dried, it's going to be pretty soft.  If it's still not soft enough for you, wet it and work some more.  Pappy does a dry scrape method to remove the hair.  I'd love to see that done.

Everyone interested in doing this tanning process I would suggest having hides at various stages of the process so you can get your feet wet doing some of all of them.  But, remember tanning a hide doesn't happen is 3 day, from my experience.  Like if you're wanting to remove hair with ash solution, it needs to soak for at least 3 day with it being stirred 3 to 5 times a day, before the hair can be removed easily.

I plan to make two 8x8 stretching frames that will be hinged together to create a smoking frame.  I'll also buy some 3x4 so we can make addition frames as needed.

And string, string and more string.  I'm talking about nylon type string/twine/cord of the paracord size.  Less stretch twine is better, but zero stretch parachod is pretty expensive.  My experience is you can go through 50ft of cord on one deer hide pretty quickly.

There are at least 3 of us, Wapiti, Gutshot and myself who have some experience in tanning hides, don't be afraid to ask questions.  But, be warned you might get three different answers.  haha In my studies of hide tanning, there seems to be as many different ways to tan a hide as there is to make a bow.

Lastly, it would be nice to know: what hides you're bring, where you plan to be in the process and what you want to accomplish with the hides.  It would give me an idea of what to plan for.

I've only got one deer hide left in my freezer. I will get it fleshed out and get  by  it cut up in 4 sections for all phases of tan so you guys can see how I do it. I've also tried the ash and water but my experience hotter the weather the better and always use hard lumber ash. Cold weather was no good for mine

Gutshot, I never thought about weather affect the ask solution.  I could see where it might cause the pores to tighten.  Maybe that why it took longer to looses the hair than I had read, cause I usually do most of fletching in the winter months.

Now, the egg tanning solution is mighty touchy in the heat of the summer.  I did my first batch in July and had it in the carport in a pickle bucket.  I stirred it right on schedule.  I immediately started the second batch even though I was going camping in NC.  I put the lid on the pickle bucket to transport it to campground. I didn't stir on the trip down, then forgot about most of the next day.  It was "working" in that closed bucket.  It smelled terrible when I opened the bucket.  haha.  I washed the hides out and brought them home.  I re-stretched and dried them, but never finished the process.  Those are the ones that need to be done over to finish the process.  haha

Clint, I'm fairly new and appreciate you asking. I can tell you what would help me the most would be if anyone could bring cauls, ( reflex, reflex deflex, recurve tip forms)  I can paper trace. Or if someone could trace them out themself if they don't want to lug them here.  What I have made and been using  so far needs to be upgraded bad. Joe.

I can bring lumber for forms That's no problem. Does Dave per chance have a band saw and drill press in his shop. I cut the ones I use now with a sawzaw and a rasp. Not real exact. Joe.

As far as splicing, I've not done one but been wanting to, and been thinking about it for some time now.  If I can get into the shop in the next couple weeks I'll have a set of billets we can do first to learn on.  I think the important part is cutting on the correct side of the line and prepping the billets prior to layout and sawing.  Go ahead a bring your billets we'll take a look.

Joe,
Yes Dave has a band saw, and all the tools to make a caul.  Bring some nails or better yet screws and will help ya make the cauls....

I've done a half dozen splices(successful ones) and really like drawing the cuts on the mailing label stickers and applying to the squared up ends of the billets. Back and belly need to flat and squared for best fit. I was doing 4" W splices. I never pegged the splice with a dowel like some say to do. After seeing what Marc St. Louis does with his splices, I think it's a good idea to glue up the splice with setback in the handle like he does. He also only does a 3" splice.

Tracy,
I do agree with you, if you do have billets with the backs down to a good ring and the back and belly square with the sides perpendicular to the back and belly....and while your doing all of that you might a well add a little reflex to the stave.........
Sounds like a good weekend ..

Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on February 09, 2015, 01:39:31 am
I think all my cauls are 2x6 as well.  Heck you can get 5 1/2" of reflex with a 2x6.  Now if you're really recurving the tip and are wanting add the reflex and recurve at the same time.  2x8 would probably be better.  I personally like to recurve my tips in a separate process.

Bill, my experience is limited and the fun doesn't begin until you start fitting the splices together. That's why squared ends are very helpful.  ;)

I have several 48"-50" bark on staves that we could use if needed.  Looks like really good wood, just a little shorter than I like for bows.  I can tote them up there to use for spliced billets.  They are all 2+ years old.

Clays, let say 15 people are shooting and each shoots 1 box of shells (25) that's 375 pigeons. I have at least a 1/2 of box of clays, however many that might be. Maybe we can scavenge some unbroken birds, maybe not.  And maybe some folks will want to practice Friday  or Saturday morning before the shoot.  And, maybe some folks will want to shoot some Sunday.

I'm thinking of set up a "pigeon range" like Brian does when we get together for our shooting match.  It would be 5 stations, 1 to the left and one to the right of the thrower. 1 station far left and down hill to give the shooter a right to left crossing shot, another station that's a mirror image to that one giving the shooter a left to right crossing shot.  AND then the pickle bucket station in front of the thrower, where the shooter gets an over the head/going away shot (0f course the pigeon is doing it's little frizbee drop at that time, also.

I've figured out how I'm going to make the scraping board out of the 12" pvc pipe.  I'm going to cut it in half length ways and make 2 scraping beam from it. Now I can only use one scraping beam at a time.  So, the second one is up for trade at the end of the gathering. So, I'm taking bids.   >:D

Bill, an electric draw nice is the bomb, especial on nice straight, clean stave.  I'm not as good as GMC at chasing a ring with one but I can still get to the heart wood using one.

I finished the first fleshing beam today.  This one will be up for trade.  I need the make the one I keep with treated wood, because it will have to live outside. I think these are going to be awesome fleshing beams.

The curls from an electric draw knife, especially from osage, makes good fire starters.  :)

I got the second fleshing beam finished today.  I'll get the drying racks made next week and we should be in business.  I'm making them as two: 8 x 8 foot squares, joined at the top with a bolt through hinge to create an A-frame.  That way a people can work on each side.  It should, also, make it handy for smoking the hides.  We'll see how that works out.

I took Schuy to the chiropractor this afternoon. My driveway was hell. Going out the driveway I got stopped in the Tocamo twice going down hill. When we got back home it took 20 minutes to get from the road to the house.  I'd hit snow drifts half way up the headlights, which would stall out the truck.  Silly me didn't bring a shovel.  So, I was in front of the truck throwing arm loads of snow out of the way.  After doing that twice already, when I stalled on the third drift, I backed up about 20 feet and headed into the field where the snow wasn't as deep.

It was the wildest ride Schuy had ever had in a truck.  She was a good co-pilot.  I asked her strongly when we got to the driveway to be quiet and let me drive.  She did very well, only pointing out that there was smoke inside the truck as we were approaching the last hill to the house.  The smoke smell was the from the tires and maybe clutch.

I was supposed to be at work at 5PM.  I called in.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Tracy, I'm doing a naked sunshine dance every evening in hopes of sun days.  Man that obsidian you gave me last year was light years above my skill level.  Every flake I tried to knock off of it was swirled and spoon shaped.  By the time I got it thinned down they points were the size of nickel and still too thick. I really need a lesson on how to take a chunk of rock, read the grain and smack it so I can get a piece that I can work with.

Gutshot, I never figured you for a left wing kinda guy.  Next thing I know you'll telling me of your dreams to move to California.  haha
I'll look at my stash of feathers Saturday.  I'm pretty sure I have quite a few LW primary feathers that I'd trade you for RW feathers.  I like the Cherokee 2-fletch arrows, so secondary feathers would more to my liking, but I'll still trade you primary feathers for primary feathers.

Appreciate the dance for good weather Dave! Hopefully dry and sunny this time and we can spend more time outside breaking rock and working staves. Obsidian is a good medium to learn on. I've still got some bigger chunks I'll bring and you can work it down into a point.

Looking forward to meeting you new guys this year.  Hope the weather is better

Hey guys, if any of you have any spare draw knives, I would be willing to trade staves for a couple.  My boss is moving to Alaska soon, and will be building a log home.  He needs a couple of larger ones to peel logs with and a smaller one.  If interested, bring em to the gathering.

Hey Guys,
Just got home from the hospital with my total knee replacement I had Monday.....Damn Greg, hate to hear that I know how much you enjoy it.  If things go as planned with no setbacks I should be able to drive then.  I hope to be there for a day or two It all depends how things go the next two weeks.  But this morning I had tendencies of chasing a nurse down the hall.   ::) ;) O:)  Same hospital and floor I got my ACL repaired 35 yrs ago.  :).  I may have to pull back on some things I said I was going to bring..  But I'll just enjoy hanging out  ;D

Man these 2 blizzards of record book proportions , have gotten me behind in prep work.  I'm off work Thurs, Fri and Sat to do some major catch up.  But it looks like it will be raining Friday and Saturday.  grrr  No problem, I work better under pressure, just a lot more adult words being used.  haha

Anyhow, I just read through all 18 pages of this thread to refresh my memory about what's going on.  It looks like there's going to be about 20 people in and out for the weekend.  Here's what I have, meals first, of course.

Friday evening we're having Chili.  I'm doing a pot of venison chili and Brian will be bring a pot of wild turkey chili. Anyone one wanting to add sides feel free to do so.

Saturday morning seem a couple folks are cooking a breakfast casserole.  I'll add some breakfast stuff to this mix.  My hens are starting to lay pretty well right now.  Bill mentioned biscuits and gravy in his Dutch ovens.  Bill, don't stress  your knee.  But, if you could bring the supplies, we can easily do them in one of the 2 stoves I have.  Would someone step up to be the breakfast chef to coordinate everyone who's cooking this breakfast?  What time should we say breakfast will be served?

Saturday evening, we're having a smoked deer hind quarter from Greg and wild boar BBQ from me.  I will say this razor back boar has a little strong flavor, but I'm still experiment with it.  Side items for this meal are appreciated.  I will be head chef for this meal.  I'm shooting to eat around 6PM so that means we'll eat at dark-thirty. haha  Hey it's better than midnight. :)

Lunch, everyone is own their own, unless someone wants to take charge of cooking something.  But, being on our own allows for individuals to be flexible with their work process.

3-D shoot, I propose we do it right after breakfast, before everyone gets working on bows and knapping.

Hide tanning: I thinking all the "instructors" have a plan on what they're going to demonstrate.  Fleshing beams, tanning bucket, smoking racks will be set up all day each day.  Maybe I should have a bulletin board set up for tanning instructors to announce when they're going to start a particular process.  Instructors to post on it an hour in advance.  That would keep scheduling loose but organized.

Clay Pigeon shoot, I suggest we start at 1PM, Saturday, because I need to get started with the meat smoking process by 3PM if we have any hopes at all of eating by 6PM.   The clay pigeon course will be set up Friday afternoon.  So, folks cans practice at anytime.  It looks like we'll have at least 6 boxes of pigeons to shoot at.  I'm appointing Brian as Range Officer.  Could a couple folks volunteer to be assistant Ranger Officers who would take folks out to practice if they wish to do so, so that Brian would not be spending all weekend in field?  I know most of you and trust your safety ethics, but having someone to show shooter the range would be good.  Speaking of safety, I would like to request that if you're not the shooter or the on-deck shooter, please have the breech of your shotgun open.

Sunset Saturday is 7:49PM.  Serious bow building begins at  7PM.  All nighters are allowed, but we may have to work around Daniel's cot around 1AM.  But, he won't mind.  I think he'll sleep better with little, yellow, curly wood shavings falling on his head. :)

Sunday, Breakfast and lunch are left-overs or whatever.  Bow building, knapping, skeet and 3-D shooting is a free for all.  We'll do it as the mood strikes us.

Let me know if I left out anything.

Looks like it is all coming together.  Dave, I would like to do the deer hind quarter over an open fire if you have a spot available.  I can bring extra firewood for it if need be and my spit equipment.

Dave, I can help with the range if you show me what to do.  I wish I had more to offer in the cooking category.  I guess I make up for it in the eating category.  I plan on bringing a deer roast and potatoes in a slow cooker similar to what I brought last year.

Tracy, stick with your plan for Sunday casserole.

Greg, an open fire might be a little tricky.  I'll see what I can do.

Clint, thanks for volunteering as a range officer.  The Venison Roast sounds great.

Dave,
Therapy is coming along, good days and bad days.  My goal is to make it there early enough Saturday morning to have biscuits and sausage gravy ready @ 9:00 for breakfast.  Then hang around the bow shop a while and head back home that evening.  It will be just two weeks after surgery and my leg really is weak it wasn't that strong before surgery due to putting up with the knee the last few years.

Sounds like it's going to be a great time, I'll really enjoy seeing the tanning and skins demos.
Till next time,

Bill the most important thing for you do now is to take care of yourself.  Breakfast at 9AM works for me.  I have a pigeon thrower and a couple others have volunteered to bring one, also.  Clay targets are easily obtained.  :)

I got the stretching, scraping, smoking frame completed today.  The next big chore is getting the range ready.  The weather is really messing with me on this one.  I wanted to have it groomed and set up 2 weeks ago.  It won't take 3 hours to do it.  But, right now everything is a muddy mess.

Speaking of weather, it doesn't look half bad for next weekend.  Friday near 50 degrees with 40% chance of rain.  Saturday 30% chance of rain and snow around daylight; warming to 50 degrees.  The wind looks light for both days.  That's a heck of lot better than the monsoon we had on Saturday last year.

Tomorrow, Saturday, I'm going to a little more straightening in the workshop. AND THEN I'M GOING TO START WORKING ON A BOW!

I actually worked on a bow today.  It was nice creating little wood curls again. But, it wasn't yeller wood.  I got it laid out and looking like a bow.  I need to thin the limbs more, then heat straighten the alignment.  I'll do that while I'm inducing reflex.  My goal is to have it ready to tiller by weekend.

Is this the first time you have worked with HHB Dave?  If so, you will like it.  Its #2 on my list of favorite bow woods.  The dust bothers my throat.  It seems harder than osage when using a scraper or rasps.

My grandfather used to tell me that a pair of groundhog shoe strings would wear out 3 or 4 pairs of boots.  I have a groundhog hide that's been hanging in the shop for 3 years.  I'm going to do my ash solution, hair removal on it and the old deer hides in the shed.  I'd like to have the deer in the freezer fleshed out and hair removed ready for the egg tanning.  If not, I have a couple hides that need egg tanning anyhow. I saw a cool hide smoking video on YouTube.  I got figure out a way to make that happen.

OH, I took a vacation day for Thursday.  So, if anyone want to come in a day earlier, I'll be here.

I am going to be clearing out much of my stave stash.  I have to make room in my shed.  So, I will have a bunch of shorter (around 50") staves and a few other assorted staves of various lengths with me at Moontree to trade or gift to people.  Just a heads up so that everyone saves room to haul them back.  Otherwise, Dave will get stuck with them. >:D

Bring 'em on, Greg

Guys, I need some material for smoking the deer hides.  If you can easily gather some punk wood (the kind that so rotten you can crumble it with your hand) that would be awesome.  The other choice is saw dust, not shaving curls, they flame up, but the fine stuff. I probably have enough, but having never done this smokin' thing before, I'm not sure.

Clint don't stress about the punk.  Brian is going to gather some and with your idea of looking along the side of the road, I think I found some.  I'm going to gather it tomorrow.

Guys, I forgot about grabbing a box of clay pigeons and I don't have time to run back to town.  BILL DON"T YOU GO DOWN THOSE STEPS!

I got a lot of work done this Mon, Tues and a Wednesday mornings.  The 3-D range has been mowed and targets set back up.  A hide smoking stove is almost complete.  The hide racks are done and set up. The cooking smoker is back up to the house.  The camper is back at the house if someone needs a place to sleep (the leak is patched, I think).  The wild boar is marinating. The hides scheduled for hair removal are soaking in the ash bath.  The hides to be smoked are re-soaking in the egg tanning solutions. I plan to "break" them tomorrow. And I have a bow that I'm floor tillering.  The workshop is pretty straight.  So as Pappy would say, "life is good."

Dave,
Sounds like you have been real busy and have got things ready to go.  Your a great Host.

Hey Guys,
This has been the most painfull and toughest rehab I have ever been through.  My physical therapist thinks it was not very realistic for me to set a goal as aggressive as I did for only being out of surgery a little more than two weeks.

It's killing me to say that I will not make it this year.  I'm am really going to miss all the fun and the guys that will be there this year.  I'll definitely be thinking about yall.  Please take lots of pictures.

A more realistic goal for me is walking up and down the hills at the Classic this year.   I hope to see everyone there and at Marshall.
DLH I'll have some cane for you at the Classic, sorry for not getting them to you sooner.

Bill

That's a bummer Bill.  Better let that knee heal properly.  Maybe Pappy will let you cruise around in a golf cart at the Classic.

Dave, I have a box and a half of targets to bring.  I got the deer roast thawing and picked up some potatoes and carrots at the store this morning.  I think I'm all set to head south tomorrow afternoon.  The weather looks way better than last year.  We won't even need to fire up the wood stove

Is it still OK if I crash in the guest cabin Dave?

If it is not taken, I might crash there as well.  Originally I was going to sleep on the couch, but the guest cottage sounds great.

Bill, we miss you terribly.  But with that said, I think you're making the right choice.  Heal quickly, my brother.  I'll see you at the Classic.

Clint, I thought you put your reservation in for the cottage in June.  haha  Sure you're welcome to it.

Greg, sure you can stay in the cottage if you can put up with Clint's snoring.  haha And, he gets up really early.

I gathered 2 buckets of punk wood driving down my road this morning.  I didn't even make it to the end of the road either.  It's great living in the country. :)

Here's what I've been doing most of the day so far. I don't think it's going to dry out to fast on me.  haha  There's 100 ft of string for that little hide.

Bummer Bill. But, I would rather be able to walk the courses in TN and IN and shoot with you later than you being laid up longer. Good choice. Hope to schedule a time to get shirts tomorrow so I can get there earlier Saturday. I sent the preview to Clint and he gave a nod of approval :D. Weather looks good!

Joe, do you need me to bring a couple of snake stretching boards?  I can help you skin them and tack them down if you want.

Dave, I'm going to try and be there around noon tomorrow.

Does anyone need any more of that band saw blade material that I brought last year?  Or any other supplies?
Title: Re: 3rd Annual Moon Tree Gathering
Post by: hedgeapple on March 20, 2015, 02:33:20 am
Snake stretching boards-- I have one 2x10 board for snake stretching.  We can always find "wall space" in the workshop to staple a snake skins if needed.  BUT, I get 20% of snake skins stapled to the wall  ;) Just Kiddin'.  And the stapler has to pull out all the staples.  :)

One thing I learned today: you can't "break" a deer hide when it's drizzling rain and 100% humidity for the day.  The dang thing will not dry out.  haha  I did seriously think of building a tarp lean-to, but said the "the hell with it. I'll break it tomorrow."

I did have a "wild fire" in the workshop today.  I was drying punk wood on a metal sheet on top of the woodstove.  After about 6 hours of this process a few pieces did develop smoke embers.  I scooped it away with the shovel.

My list of things to do tomorrow by importance and practically of getting them done (i.e. help arrives):
1. Dry punk wood (I gotta build a fire to do so?
2. Straighten/reflex HHB bow
3. Break deer hide.
4. Clean bathroom
5. Vacuum attic in cottage and clear off the bed.
6. Move boat and tractor out of the shed
7. Straighten up the workshop.
8. Set up the skeet range when Brian and Clint get here.
9. Replace florescent bulbs when Brian and Clint get here.
10.  Make smoking soak for deer hide.
11. Stitch up deer hide.
12. Set up lights in the shed.
Most importantly: GREET OLD FRIENDS AND MAKE NEW ONES.

Dave, thank you for hosting this even again.  I really enjoy coming down to the moontree farm each spring.

Tracy, thanks for the shirts.  I'll wear it with pride.

Greg, thanks for the cooler full of animal parts and thanks for the Kentucky round steak sandwich.

Joe, thanks for the skins.  Glad I could help you skin them.

The food was excellent again this year.  Thanks everyone for putting it all together.  It was nice to meet some new people interested in primitive archery.  You guys fit right in with our little group.  Hope you all can make it back next year.

Dave, the other Joe here. I want to thank you for your hospitality, and sharing your tv for the ball game. This was the first primative event I've been to and I can say it won't be my last.  I was kinda lost though, only being able to spend one day and so much going on that I couldn't  take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that was there. ( I should have called in to work and came Fri. also ) I really needed some extra eyes on my  bow on the tillering tree and got it from Clint and Tracy. Great meeting everyone else to, my hats off to all of you guys for pitching in to help Dave pull this off.  Looking forward to the next one. Had a great time. Joe.

Dave I just want to thank you for your hospitality and everyone there - Clint, Tracy, and i wish i could remember all the names. We had a fantastic time and learned so much! I also want to thank Clint for the osage and assistance. Tracy for the arrowhead. Jack, Trisha and myself loved the shoot around. We are all hooked. There is already a pile of Osage shavings in the the floor, and Jack has everything laid out to make a display arrow with the arrowhead. His Moms funeral was yesterday. Being able to get his mind away from his loss helped so much with his anxiety.
We cant wait for another get together.

Tracy, I don't think you left anything this year.  Maybe you should send me something and we'll pretend you left it. :)

Obviously you didn't look in the loft of the shop >:D just kidding Dave.

Need to get Brian ,Daniel , Marcus and you and I together to break some rock this summer

Clint, I got some of that Goliath at Easter and pranked my nephew when we were there shooting clays.  >:D  also got some of the dove clays and holy $&@? are they fun and hard to hit. Next year I'll bring some if we have interest.

Tracy, breaking some rocks this summer sounds like fun. It seems like I never have time to sit with you in pit during Moon Tree.  Devoting a day to just breaking rocks would be great.  I tried to work some spalls about a week ago.  I made plenty of gravel.  haha  But, I saw improvement, so that's good.
