On another forum I'm a member on they have a thread called "It followed me home" where members post items they picked up at auctions, yard sales, flea markets, estate sales, etc. It's fun to follow along and see what kind of bargains everyone finds. Plus you can learn from others on how useful or how valuable an item is. I know me and Mullet have posted pictures on different threads. I thought it would be good to start a new one so everyone can post pictures of the treasures that follow them home.
I'll start it off. This stuff followed me home from an auction yesterday. I got the saw blade and the ax head for a dollar each. The saw blade should be good knife steel. It's a perfect thickness and it doesn't have carbide teeth. The hammers came as a lot. All I wanted was the Craftsman 4 lb mini sledge. I needed a new one for splitting wood. I don't know what brand that rasp is. All I can find on it is some letters and numbers stamped into it. I also got a router, electric staple gun, atv seed spreader, and some other junk.

You're a magnet for that stuff, Clint. Nice haul.
-
Rusty tools are my weakness Pat.
-
I got three splitting wedges for a dollar a piece and an old Plumb hatchet for three dollars yesterday.
-
That was very cheap for those Jon. Can you post a picture of them?
-
I like this thread. It might even get me to pull over and check out some garage sales. I kinda miss the old fashion farm auction sales. They always had some goodies on the "jewelry wagons". Now they do them all online.

BJ, check out auctionzip .com. You can search all the auctions in your area. I found a woodworking auction next month that's only 10 minutes from the house.

Got this old wrench for a buck, made in erie pa, going out in my forging tools(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170219_094012448_zpsccdlmsrs.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170219_094012448_zpsccdlmsrs.jpg.html)

Yard sale season is nearly a month away! Dang! Many years ago, I picked up a fancy glass decanter that looks real good with Hennessy cognac in it😀 Guess I will start looking for an anvil. Got. To make room for stuff first.
-
My supervisor found these in the trash the other day at work and asked me if I wanted to give them a good home, so they followed me home. Who throws stuff like this away?
-
Actually I went and looked in the trash with him, and there were about another fifteen pipe wrenches in there with this one, all American made, 24" and 36". He wouldn't let me take all of them or I would have
-
This si going to be a great thread!
-
Nice find Aaron. Who would throw good tools like that away?
-
Clint I didn't make it five minutes with the Plumb hatchet and someone offered me 20 bucks for it. I don't normally do any alley trading but I wasn't gonna pass that up. I was shocked at what people would pay for cast iron cooking things. That is where the money is!
-
My neighbor and I headed for an Amish sawmill this morning and was overwhelmed with the options.

In the end, we each came away with a few pieces and vowed to return in a few weeks. My share cost me a whopping $5, and some of this stuff is incredible.

Jon, Hatchet and ax prices are very high right now. Good job turning a quick profit.
Scott, That's some nice looking turning blanks. Did you climb to the top of the pile to look around?
-
Scott...looks like things took a "turn" for the better. Haha, did I "bowl" you over with that pun? I gotta go lathe down and rest now.
-
;D
Yep, Clint I was all over that pile. It was mostly oak, maple, and sycamore, but we were looking for the interesting grains, spalting, and ambrosia chunks.
-
Looked like maybe some cedar?
-
This is a great thread
-
Nice haul Scott ! I really like that Spalted piece - Bob.
-
I had a few things follow me home today. One is very interesting. I'll post pictures this evening.
-
I took the wife on a quick lunch date in town today. Just so happens to be an antique store next to the restaurant. They were having a 40% off sale. I got these for $2.40. I'm going to grind the jaws a little and use them for holding flat steel in my forge.

And now for the interesting find. I went to a guys house I met on Tradgang. He lives about 30 minutes away. We split a little wood and then talked bows for a while. He ended up giving me this True Temper spring steel longbow. I think it was made in the 1920's - 1930's. It has a U cross section to the limbs. I believe its a take down but I didn't try to take the limbs out of the cork grip. The string is not original. I think it came with a metal string. We strung it up and shot a couple of arrows out of it. It's slow with some hand shock/vibration. He checked the draw weight and got 42 lbs @ 28".

That spring steel bow is way cool!
Scott, I just carved my first duck decoy and probably will do a couple more. I would have lost it looking at that huge pile of wood. :)
I don't really rummage or go to auctions, but you guys have me thinking about it now. One thing I do is scour my neighborhood, esp. in the spring when tree trimming is going on. I've dragged home buckthorn, persimmon, and apple billets and staves so far.
-
Stringman....That's one thing I really like as to me moving down here in southern Iowa by these Amish sawmills. There's three of them within 15 miles of me.They'll let stuff go dirt cheap or even give it away.I helped one's son make a few bows and visit them quite often.
Arron...That's almost unbelievable someone throwing away tools like that sledge etc.
Farm sales are in the free paper here all the time.Just gotta take the time yo go to them is all.
-
Here is some information on that bow:
Patented May 29, 1934
BOW FOR ARCHERY
Robert H. Cowdery, Geneva, Ohio, assignor to The American Fork & Hoe Company, Cleveland,
Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application March 5, 1929, Serial No. 344,287
4 Claims.
My invention relates to archers bows.
Archers bows of metallic material have been previously proposed for use, but the use of such bows has not been attended by success in all re- 5 spects for a number of reasons, among which are the undue weight of the bows, improper distribution of flexure in weight, breakage of the bows as sometimes occurs, and injury to the user as sometimes attends such breakage.
An object of my present invention is to provide a bow comprising limbs of tempered steel so constructed that for a given weight of steel material, a high degree of efliciency in accuracy and in length of flight of the arrow, which is projected from the bow, is secured.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bow so made as to practically eliminate the danger of personal injury and destruction of the bow resulting from breakage of the resilient bow limbs when the bow is drawn, in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved steel bow of pleasing appearance, of high efliciency in use, and which may be manufactured relatively inexpensively.
Another object of my invention is to provide a bow which will not be subject to warping and which will not be substantially injured if unstringing of the bow is not done immediately after each use of the same, as is required with present day bows.
Another object of my invention is to provide an archers bow which will not emit an unpleasant metallic sound when an arrow is discharged from the bow; also, which will have limbs utilizing to the utmost the resiliency of the tempered steel, but which will not be disagreeably cold to the touch in cold weather, nor have the hard metallic surface of steel bows previously proposed for use...

That's a lot of tongs :o

Really nice haul Gutshot. Those tongs are great. Your wife will love that sink and if she doesn't they are great in a shop. They are easy to clean. We have one in our shop with the original porcelain faced cabinet.

I've got the cabinet too but the porcelain is all cracked up on it.
-
There is a large sink laying in the weeds behind one of the old tobacco barns at work. It's similar to yours. I saw one spot where the porcelain was chipped off. I've thought about rescuing it but I don't have a use for it.
-
You need to get it There's people out there that will buy them.
-
Clint they are great for messy jobs. You might even just make it portable and have it so you could hook it up to water outside in the summer months. Where is the porcelain chipped off? If it's not in basin it might still be worth saving. Great for cleaning up hides, or cleaning fish. I wouldn't trade our old shop one for any fancy sink.

Yeah Clint ....fish cleaning sink, I've got one out at camp that I wouldn't give anything for.......

They look like they are in good shape.
I just went and looked at a free camper. It did not follow me home. I was wanting it for the frame but its to big and the tires are rotted. It would have taken a lot of work and money to get it to a usable frame.
-
That's probably a good thing it didn't follow you home. Might not have made it!😆
-
This didnt follow me home but it has been in my father in laws family for a few generations and i thought it was pretty cool never seen one like this(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170226_111730453_zpsua32z28c.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170226_111730453_zpsua32z28c.jpg.html)

It is made by acme and the original patent was around 1886, the outlaw found that out

Very cool

Picked up this axe/hatchet at an indoor rendezvous. I need another hatchet like I need a hole in my head, but for $10 I couldn't say no. I can't see any marks (maker's that is, plenty of use) on it, and its a shape I have not seen before. The handle is definitely homemade.

Do you have a picture of the shape of the eye? I'll try to find out some info on it. It has a similar shape to some European hatchets.
-
Not a close-up, it is very similar to a "standard" eye, but I am definitely no expert. I'll try to get one tonight.
-
My brother in law was having a yard sale and his boss asked him to sell this. I ended up getting it for free. No name that I can see. I use it once in a while.

Those are cool. I think Pappy restored one and hung it in his workshop at Twin Oaks.
-
Here is another one for you Clint. This followed me home out of my grandfathers tool box that was stashed in my dads shed. Always wondered what it was. Any ideas?
I should mention the skull mount in the drill press pic. was done following your directions...thanks.

That's a tool for setting the teeth angle on old saws. Google: saw wrest
-
I was hoping you knew what that was, thanks.
-
I scored a couple of old Old Hickory butcher knifes and a cleaver this weekend. Make great scrapers.
-
RPS3, your hatchet might be French made. The skull looks good. Here is a video showing how to use a saw wrest.

Paoliguy, can you post a picture of your knives?

I watched it, and now I know. Maybe even use it someday.

I am guessing you meant my hatchet? Or did I miss a post with another hatchet?
French, very interesting. I would guess late 19th to early 20th century? I will get pictures of the eye tonight.
-
My mistake Ksnow. I was talking about your hatchet. I got confused by all the cool tool pictures you guys are posting. Tomorrow I'll post some pictures of the stuff I got out of a $10 auction room a while back. It was about the best bargain I've got so far.
-
It is very easy to get confused/distracted by old tools. Look forward to seeing your finds.
-
Osage, here are a few pics of the eye, both above and below. There is a slight difference in the flare between the top and bottom, but not much. Overall, the handle is 21 inches long.

That's an old one. Very cool.
-
I'd love to pin down more details, but it looks like this will take a lot of research. It definitely does not look mass produced.
-
Thats a nice looking axe mass produced or not
-
Most of these "followed me home". All but a handful were in pretty sad shape before I refurbished them. Not pictured are some I have down at the cabin and in my truck. I paid less than 10 bucks for most of them except I think I paid about 20 for the fire axe.
-
Nice collection BrianS. I see some familiar styles in there. You have no shortage of stave reducing tools.
Thanks, Bubby. I am going to rehaft it (same style) and put it to use in the near future.
Kyle
-
These saws "Followed me Home". I think most were picked up for about 20 bucks each. Did some research on refurbishing and sharpening and I have all in ok working order. One I had a Amish Fellow sharpen for me and that one cuts real good. I still need to do some more work on them. Lots to learn about saws and getting them to cut correct. Have a few smaller buck saws from probably the 20s or 30s with odd length blades that I am looking for blades. Also these files "Followed me Home". They were real bad but I refurbished them using Muriatic acid and they cut pretty good again. I think I paid maybe two bucks for a bucket of files. Putting these old tools back to work is very satisfying. No way I could ever afford to buy some of this stuff brand new.
-
Here is a picture from a few years back of me aka Papa showing my grandson aka Michael how the saws work
-
Very nice tools. I like that shorter double bit cruiser ax.
-
Osage Outlaw,
I hate to see older stuff laying around in disrepair with the chance it will be ruined. Whether it is a old bow, wood snowshoes, old axes, saws, hunting knives etc. If the price is right and it can be refurbished I pick it up when I can. Most of the things are in rough shape when they "Follow me home".Some stuff I use, some is given away to others, sometimes I even sell or trade. Sad to me when some of this old stuff is lost to neglect or misuse. Enjoyed seeing items in this post that others have had follow them home.
Take care,
Brian
-
I'm the same way. I try to limit my purchases to tools that I use.
Here is some of the stuff that I got from a golf course auction a while back. I got the entire contents of the maintenance room in the clubhouse for $10. My truck bed and cab were packed full. I already sold a metal store display rack, dyson vaccuum, and a wooden drawer unit. I'm well over $100 profit so far. I still have a brand new electric hand dryer, 2 cases of furnace filters, a new furnace fan blade, and a bunch of other stuff that I need to get rid of. Besides all of that stuff I got about a dozen cans of spray paint, most of them are new, a nice metal storage cabinet, a no fire arms sign that I put on the cabinet, a fire extinguisher, some tools, and a solid vise. I would have gladly paid $10 for only the vise. There was also 2 boxes of lost and found stuff and $16 worth of copper and brass.

These two hammers followed me home from the clearance isle at Tractor Supply. One is a cross peen and the other is a mini sledge. The set of two was only $9.

Clint be carefull with the new junk, I bought a mini sledge similar to thst and it shattered when I hit a wedge
stuff went flying every where

I've thought of that Guy. I made sure to ask them if I could get a refund if it broke. I wear glasses now so my eyes will be protected
-
I got these at a auction today $1 for the rasp and $20 for the draw knife.
-
Nice finds. What are the names on the rasp and draw knife.

This hammer old chalk box and I think the other three items are for putting screens in with but if I'm wrong please tell me what there for followed me home Saturday. These where some of my grandpas tools

On the draw knife the only thing I can see on it looks like waton and the file it says America made in the USA.
-
Gutshot, I like the pistol grip on that silver roller. That looks like it could be a screen tool.
Joe, Could you bring the draw knife and rasp to moontree? I'd like to get a closer look at them.

Sure would like to know what this tool is? It is by JW Speaker Corp. and was my grandad's. I guess it could be something to do with old head lights but it is bench mounted and does something. It might work for a bow vice. The other old tools are his also but the hatchet is one I got as a kid. I put the honey locust handle on the brass hammer. Some stuff has some markings. Ask if you want the names or symbols.
-
That's an old inner tube hot patch tool. That hatchet looks like a Norlund. Those are very cool. Pearly gave me a small Norlund hatchet. I need to replace the handle on it. The ax is a Jersey style head. The cross peen hammer needs brought back to life. Thanks for posting.
-
Thanks Double O. The inner tube patch tool makes a lot of since. After WWI He worked in the Anderson Car plant in our town. Coarse it went to making other things during WWII. He started working on cars after that. Lots of cool old tools back in the day of old Fords. The man always owned a Buick. Go figure. I don't remember when I got the Norlund hatchet but I have had it since I remember. It has a cool sheath with Norlund embossed on it. The cross pen does not have a maker mark or anything still on it. I will make a handle for it next project. You don't know anything about the Custonite Hammer do ya? It is bronze or copper and has a Pat. Pend. and RG 300 on it.
-
I did some quick research on the brass hammer. Looks like they still make them but under a different name.
Flex-Flo brass hammers last longer with greater economy and safety. They are made with a saw tooth hollow head, eliminating mushrooming. This unique head design allows it to keep it's dimensional stability, shape and balance. Cast heads are made with 85-5-5-5 brass and are pinned to genuine hickory handles. These are the old CUSTANITE brand hammers.
-
Thanks for the info.
-
No problem. I enjoy looking up old tools.

Here is the steer hide that I saw for sale. I really wanted to buy it but didn't have the extra money and couldn't think of what I would do with it. It sure looked cool though.

I like that cow hide too. really like that old coffee bean grinders below the hide.
-
Just out of curiosity what was the price tag on that hide to have it follow someone home?
Bjrogg
-
I believe it was $130
-
That would seem like a pretty good deal for a tanned steer hide. You could get more than one project out of that hide. A hammock would be kinda cool. Was it tanned?
Bjrogg
-
It was tanned and very soft. It was professionally done
-
If you were in the market for one that seems like a heck of a deal to me. I've got $40 for them unfleashed and dirty before.

Three milk crates of knapping is rock following me home on Monday. One from New Mexico and two from Texas. Also tagging along is around 100 pieces of dead Cholla cactus for stone knife handles and other projects.
I see those cow hides hanging from trucks at intersections often here in Texas. Not sure what they get for them.
-
Sounds like you will be making a lot of stone knives Jeb.
-
If anyone is interested I have some old tools that will be following me to the Classic for trade. Old hand saws, a few hand planes and anything else I can find as I clean out the basement. I'll try to get some pics of what I'll be bringing.
-
When is the Classic Pat. Hope to get my wife down there with me this year. She just retired and likes to go to these events with me.
Need a few chola sticks osage let me know.

Pat, if you have any old hatchets, axes, or draw knives please put me first on the trading list.
Jeb, You and your wife will have a great time at the Classic. I hope you can make it. I copied and pasted this info from Pappy's thread.

whenever I had to use those it wasn't much fun anyway Pat.lol I'm sure whoever you gave it back to apriceated it. Probably made sure it was secured down better before they drove off with it too.lol.

I got a $50 tip and I think the driver lost his job. I'd seen those things used and had no intention of ever using it. My oil less compressor wouldn't drive it anyway. ;) Another time I was behind a dump truck towing a lowboy trailer with a backhoe on it. When the light turned green the truck drove off and the backhoe rolled off the trailer. Glad I wasn't too close behind that. ::)
-
Pat, When we meet up at the Classic remind me to tell you my pneumatic jackhammer story ;)
-
Yup I was just at a trailer hitch safety meeting. You should have seen some of the pictures that guy putting the meeting on had. If it wasn't so scary it would have been hilarious. Said he got most of the pictures in the Walmart parking lot but some where driving down the expressway.

I was offered a canvas wall tent for $50. Went out to take a look and had to dig thru this guys closet full of junk. Way back under the stair, I found this thin rolled up and all the poles/stakes. After looking it over, I said it looked to be worth $50. He said just "go ahead and take it," and then he threw in an army fart sack (extreme cold weather mummy bag.)

Not bad for free. Just needs minor repairs.
-
Nice tent. It looks big. What are the dimensions?
-
9x11 and 7' in the peak. I've about got all the holes patched up, now I just wonder if the canvas is still strong.

That is a cool looking tent.
-
In addition to me having the "It followed me home" bug, many of my friends up at our Archery Club have it also. We have held Members Only Swap Meets in the past. Lots of great Archery, Hunting and Outdoors stuff shows up on the tables. It mostly works like this: You bring up some stuff, sell, trade or give it away and then find some new stuff that "follows you home".
-
Nice find, Stringleberries! Nice, indeed!
-
The Hawkeye swap meets are a lot of fun Brian, I always come home with more stuff than I get rid of. :OK
Kevin
-
That looks like my kind of swap meet.
-
Stringman....and it's got a floor too yet for snake country.Great score I'd say.Nice size too.
Usually most canvas tents are made out of at least 10 ounce material.I've had very good results using a tear mender type latex glue along with a canvas patch to patch canvas,or blinds that are even made out of more synthetic nylon material. No sewing involved at all.
I'm sure you know but mildew is the enemy of most canvas.Putting it away dry is crucial and in a good dry place too.Your stress points will reveal how well it was took care of of course.
From the looks of it I don't see many tears.Having all the parts etc. too.An awning and looks like screened windows too yet. That's a night time plus in the summer.Maybe a water proofing job is in order too.Lots of products out there.Put it on with a weed sprayer.Patching everything first though.Worth sticking a small amount of money and time into.
-
Scott, it looks like Sears quit using the name J.C. Higgins around 1964. Your tent is over 50 years old!
-
I've got a couple canvas dwellings that are over 35 years old that are as good as new yet.Just makes a diff how well it was put away and stored.
-
I found an almost new Stihl chain saw in the middle of the roadway in a small town here in Texas the other day. I dropped off at the local P.D. in case the owner asked about it. I mean like new without a scratch on it.
-
This probably doesn't qualify as thrifty but I did get it today and it is used. I was in the market for a newer, bigger bandsaw to at least reduce staves but also had fantasies about having one big enough to resaw logs, for whatever purpose. A friend at work heard I was looking and gave me a deal on this 5hp that I couldn't refuse. He threw in several carbide blades of different thicknesses and one of those accordion roller benches. So all in all it was a very good deal for me. Its 650 lbs.
-
Now thats a bandsaw (S

We had a little snow last night and woke up to about 2" on the tent canvas. I had left it up with the thought to test it out and see how it faired. I wouldn't want to count on it on a trip and have it fail so this was a way to eliminate some worry. I walked out and popped the snow off the top and everything seemed fine as frog hair, so my investment seems to have been worth it! :OK

Does that mean you are selling the pop up Scott?

It's a good tent I bet Scott but beware of the very windy days or storms over night.Setting it up in a protected area would be best.I'm sure you know that anyway though.

Over a thousand board feet of 1x6 lumber found its way onto my trailer. I gave the guy an arrowhead and he called it a good trade.

Man Scott your a pretty good trader there.Good score!!!A project or two in there.

True talk, Ed. I'm thinking vertical siding for my pole shed.
-
Man great deal Scott, of course I'm sure it was a beautiful point.
Bjrogg
-
Cool.A place to work on bows?Every fella should have a place like that.Don't let it urn into a storage shed....lol.
-
Nice haul Scott. That bow shed will look good. The lumber fairy paid me a visit also. I'm working on loading pictures.
-
I went to an interesting auction today. It was a swamp. They had a tractor pulling the stuck 4x4 trucks out of the field. It was like getting to watch a mud run for free. There was a ton of lumber there. Most of it went pretty high. After some side dealing I bought all of this for $15. It's mostly white oak with a few osage boards and one walnut board. It was stored in the basement so it's dry and not warped. I have no clue what I'm going to do with the oak. I couldn't pass it up for that cheap.

I bought this bucket full of aluminum nails for $1. I'm not sure what they are good for but it's about 10 lbs of aluminum scrap if nothing else.

I got 2 cast iron skillets for $15. The big one is 12" across. Greg Sulfridge thinks they are both Lodge brand. The leaf blower was $5. I needed one to blow the sawdust out of my garage. The other junk was included with the bucket of nails. I was happy with my $36 worth of auctions treasures.

I spent the day with my wife at thrift and antique stores. I brought home a couple of good finds.
I got the post vice for $30. It has a bad welding rbut pair job on it but it should work well anyway. I got the "old hickory" knife for $5 and the "bird wrench" for $5. Does anyone know anything about that wrench?
-
I went to a auction today and these things followed me home. I got a double bladed axe for $ 12 and a basket of files and rasp and a heat gun for $ 6.
-
Heat gun
-
Swampman, that's a cool looking wrench. I've never seen one like that before.
Joe, Is there a name on the double bit ax? That's a nice tub of rasps and heat gun.

Your the best Clint everything just seems to like to follow you beautiful wood, could use some the nails for pressure flakers

I'm always on the lookout for a deal BJ. Will aluminum nails work for a pressure flaker?
-
I couldn't find a name on the ax. I couldn't get the pic to download but I'll text you a pic of it.

Here is Joe's ax

Clint you can use aluminum like you use copper. It's a little soft but it grips pretty good. Sometimes I use them for notching.
Bjrogg
-
Then I've got about 50,000 aluminum pressure flakers BJ ;D
-
Better start knapping Clint.lol. You sure are good at finding this stuff
Bjrogg
-
You are the king of auctions Clint, you could melt that aluminum and use the barstock you make for other projects

That was a great purchase Clint. Would love to find some osage boards up here.

My little sister brought me by some knifes, her and her husband have a used car lot and apparently lots of knifes get left in the rigs and she knows i have a thing for knifes. The big lockback is a uncle henry, a nice filet knife, i think the pocket knife is a parker frost, not a frost cutlery one, a couple of sheath knifes , the india looking knife has a carved handle and sheath with a cool retainer lever(http://i623.photobucket.com/albums/tt320/bubncheryl/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170319_141605299_zpsrrc8soza.jpg) (http://s623.photobucket.com/user/bubncheryl/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170319_141605299_zpsrrc8soza.jpg.html)

Good deal all the way around Bubby. I use to work in Detroit when I was in elctronics school. I installed car stereo's for a couple years. Blow your mind the stuff you find in people's cars
Bjrogg
-
Yeah i can't complain, they were free and she dropped them off
-
That's an interesting collection of knives Bubby. The small folder below the big one looks just like the knife that I had when I was 5. I still have the scar from the stitches I got from it.
That's cool that she saves the knives for you. Tell her you like guns too.
-
Very NIce BUB!
-
I put those white oak boards on craigslist and sold them today for a pretty good profit. Enough to fund some more auction trips next month.
-
I picked up this small skillet for $3.50 at an antique store in town. I wanted something cheap to test out in my new electrolysis tank.

-
Are you using the tank to get rid of rust?
-
Yes. I made a separate post.
-
How have I not seen this thread? Love it!!
-
This was my Great Uncles bandsaw. Many years ago we fixed it up for him and got it working tip-top. He was very happy with it and wanted to know what he owed us for it. We really loved this old feller and couldn't charge him anything for it and told him so. He thanked us and told us when he passed away it was ours. Well here it is. It's not a real big saw not even sure if I could rough a bow out with it and it needs to be fixed up again. I definitely want to get it going again. It's a old Craftsmen I think. It actually has the guide for the rollers broken and can't seem to find original parts. Trying to cobble something together.
Bjrogg
-
Here is the original broken guide. Anyone have any ideas where to get one?
Bjrogg
-
Well this is what we cobbled together. It seems to kinda work. Might not be the handiest if you where changing different blades a lot, but this will cut.
Bjrogg
-
I saw the welder in the first picture and knew you'd come up with something ;D

That is a cool old saw BJ. It's handy to have a smaller saw with a finer blade for cutting out overlay material, arrow shafts, and handles. Good job on the repair job.
-
I went to an auction today and came home with some junk. I spent $30 on all of it. Stuff was going super cheap. It's a good thing I drove my little work car. If I had my truck I would have probably came home with to much stuff. Here are some pictures of some of the items that followed me home.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170401_165730_zps2bj5cped.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170401_165730_zps2bj5cped.jpg.html)
I got a brand new air brush kit with the compressor for $1. I found a couple stainless steel Craftsman ratchets in the bottom of a $1 box of tools.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170401_165748_zpsfplbkg9c.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170401_165748_zpsfplbkg9c.jpg.html)
The two pieces of cast iron cost me $17 and the double bit was $5. Everything else I got was $1 for box lots. I've been wanting a deep chicken fryer. I don't see a name on it.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170401_170231_zpsuap8jr65.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170401_170231_zpsuap8jr65.jpg.html)
I don't see a name on the double bit. I think the single axe has a Kelly Quality stamp. I've got some new stuff to throw into the electrolysis tank now.

And my final buy was this sewing machine for $1. My mom sews a lot and I'm always looking for a deal on machines for her.

-
Looks like you did real good.
-
You are going to have to open up a secondhand(3rd) shop with all the goodies you are finding, Clint.
-
We should rename this thread Clints bargain bin
-
Clint's Bargain Basement...we buy junk and sell antiques! :OK
-
I enjoy the search. I have fun at auctions even if I don't buy anything.
Pat, I talked to my father in law and we are going to have a manly yard sale at his house this summer. I need to clean some stuff out of my garage.
-
Clint: What is the weight of that Splitting Maul head??
Thanks
David
-
I'm not sure. I can weigh it and let you know. I can bring it to the Classic if you want it.
-
Well, another beautiful bow trailer followed me home today. I've been looking for a cheap utility trailer. With some angle iron and some lumber I can make this into something that will work. I want to make a log lifting arch on the back of it. It's longer than it looks in the picture. It's 20' overall. I should be able to get a 14' flat bed on it. The rims and tires are fairly new. The brakes look like they have been replaced recently. LED lights and jack work. I think it was well worth the $160 I paid for it. The axles are movable. I might slide them forward a foot or so. My Dad offered to buy the angle iron and lumber since we will be sharing it.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20170403_133511_zpsimndazgk.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20170403_133511_zpsimndazgk.jpg.html)
-
Well worth $160
-
A tire and rim would cost $160.
-
I'm thinking another $150 for angle iron and deck boards. I should have a pretty nice 14' utility trailer for around $300.
-
10-4 Clint:
I have been wanting a 4 to 6 pound splitting maul for some time.
Let me know what you might want in trade for it.....
Thanks
David
-
Clint doesn't have all the fun. The farrier stopped by to trim my horse and left me with some goodies.

Nice score! That save edge looks like a good one. Do you need any more nails like that? I think I have a jar of old square nails somewhere.
-
I should be set for awhile now.
-
Are those going to stay rasps or are they going to become knives?
-
Depends how sharp they are.
-
Picked these up at a road side truck with a trailer full of stuff sale. 20$

That's a nice looking draw knife. Does it have a name on it?
-
That's a nice looking draw knife. Does it have a name on it?
Yeah, it has Gutshot's name all over it! Not everything can follow YOU home, Osage Outlaw! LOL!
-
Manufacturers name JW
-
The draw knife has no name that I can find. Looks a lot like my Ben Hur. Once I get it cleaned up maybe a gutshot name might appear. Lol
-
I acquired a bunch of feathers today. And I mean a bunch! For some reason photobucket isn't displaying any of my pictures. I'll try to find a way to post one.

rookie...
-
Thanks Scott. I'm getting ready to sort and count them.
-
That's a nice bunch of feathers Clint. Usually the ones that follow me home are still attached to a turkey.lol. Half the time a kinda stinky turkey.

Wow, nice haul..................

one of my wife's friends mothers died last year and she used to go to primitive skills gatherings. Couple days ago I was invited over to take a look at any of her camping stuff to see if I wanted anything she basically told me to take everything and she wants me to come back to go through the rest of the stuff at a later date. I was sent home with 8 single and double man tents for backpacking, two thermarest mattresses full size a 14 and a 16 inch dutch oven cast iron, a mora knife, four high-quality sleeping bags some for warm some for cold weather, a whole bunch of cooking supplies, a white fuel burner and whole bunch of other random stuff. I felt extremely guilty about taking it but she wanted me to have it. when her mom would come over should always come check out my workshop. my wife does skin care for a living and this lady has facials coming for life
-
Those are some dutch ovens for a "big" party........that's some nice cast iron Pauly......14 and 16" deep ovens are for a lot of cooken....
DBar
-
Noting to do with archery but we were gifted home another 10 laying chickens. We're in the egg business big time now!!!
paulsemp....WOW!!!! that's quite a followed me home post.I've got one 14" dutch oven.I like it all to heck.Too bad I've got my shelters already I'd be a trading with you about them.
-
Dand Paul that is a bunch of great stuff, especially the dutch ovens, imagine what dbar could make in those
-
That's an awesome score Paul. Do I get to taste test something out of those dutch ovens at Marshall?
-
I've been wanting a short Bear recurve for a while now. I went to an estate auction today and ended up taking 2 of them home for a really good price. The bows seem to be in excellent condition except for the spray paint camo. The old guy painted everything. The bows have zero twist, the tips look solid, and I don't see any cracks. I've shot them both. I shot the super 48 into some bullet proof glass. It cracked the first layer and flattened the tip on the field point. The second bow is a Bear but I'm not sure what model. They both have Bear quivers full of wood arrows with old broadheads. There is even a Bear arm guard and camo sleeves on one of them. Hopefully Mullet can give me some advice on how to remove the spray paint.

I also got this old turtle painting on rawhide. I thought it would look good hanging in our camp at the Classic and Marshall. It's old but not native old. It has a tuft of human hair hanging from it.
I picked up these and a couple of die grinders.

-
Very cool Clint! And yes I plan on doing a lot of cooking at marshall
-
Nice buy, Clint. The 48" is a 1976. The other one looks like a Kodiak magnum, 52". If you want to get the paint off take a rag and moisten it with acetone and start scrubbing. Don't soak the bow with it as you lay separate the limbs if you get it too wet. You know the safety precautions dealing with acetone. Have fun, it's not easy.
-
Looks like the old bow camo if it is it should just rub off with a dry rag if not Eddy has you lined up
man that is some haul .
did I see some seveties bear razor heads on the arrows
-
Sure did Guy. :)

Cool stuff!

That looks much better than a dull file. Nice work Bubby.
-
Thanks Clint
-
Yep, I'd take that over the file any day.
-
That rat tail turned out very nice, Bubby.
We went over to my brothers house for the Easter evening and after sittin on the couch for a minute, someone says "let's go looks for mushrooms." So we drove to a spot, piled out, and almost immediately started findin fungus. One of the best morel hunts I've ever been on and the kicker was havin all the kids there to help find them. Ended up with 11lbs of these high priced little beauties!

Time we got home we were hungry, so we threw elk steaks on the grill and shrooms in the fryer.

Hope your Easter was as blessed as ours was.
-
Wow!
Love them shrooms!
Kevin
-
Mmmmm. Elk steaks :OK
-
I love looking at everyone's pics. I wish I could work metal. So many things I'd like to make.
I posted this saw a few pages back. I made a table system and some lumber. Hoping to make a table from the boards.
-
Nice setup Steve. Aren't you worried about the saw rusting?
-
Nice boards. I'm guessing the saw is on a roller base. It's nice to be able to roll it outside to keep the dust out of the shop.
-
Dang, Scott-o! An amazing meal of mushrooms with a side of elk? Food of kings!
-
Well these didn't actually follow me home. They came to visit and didn't go home.
My neighbor brought them down for me to string for him so he could sell them at a yard sale. You know I couldn't let that happen. Got the DH Mamba,55# for $40 and the Kodiak Magnum, 48# for $30. Took me twenty minutes to get the twist out of the bottom limb on the Magnum. ;D
-
A couple more.
-
Nice bows! I like the mamba. I've got a DH bow that was my uncle's. They seem well built. Is that magnum what mine looks like under the spray paint?
-
Nice old bows. Did you make the strings out of that coil of stuff ;D ;D
-
I shot both of them the other day and boy that Mamba is fast. I'm pretty sure that's what you have Clint. If we could see the serial number I could tell you for sure and also put it in Wade's Kodiak Magnum registry on Tradgang. I put this one in it.
DC, I was just playing with the trash from pruning my grape vines back last year.
-
I couldn't take it any longer Mullet. I started cleaning up the mystery bow. Turns out its a Super 48 just like the other one. It's 50 lbs and the other one is 55 lbs. I'm going to take them to work tomorrow and scrub some more paint off. Should I put something on the limbs where I cleaned with the acetone?
-
Wow! And they are both black glass. Clint, put the acetone on the rag and not on the bow first and you should be okay. after you get through just polish it with a good car wax.
I thought they were both Super Magnums by the handle profile but the one looked a little longer then the other one in the picture.
-
I thought the one was longer also just by looking at them. I've been reading about a product called Goof Off for removing paint from bows. I'm going to look for a bottle of that to try out. It might be a little safer than acetone. When I cleaned those 2 spots I put just a little acetone on a rag and scrubbed it. I didn't remove any of the original markings.
So the black glass is more collectible? What other colors did they have?
-
Good save on the Pair Eddie ! Really like the Mamba - classic lines, plus they really Zing an arrow (SH) ! Bob
-
Clint, I used Goof Off on the '59 and it stained one limb I will have to wet sand out.
-
Bob, I was impressed how fast it flung an arrow.
-
Clint, I used Goof Off on the '59 and it stained one limb I will have to wet sand out.
How bad did it stain it? Some guys on Tradgang said to use the goof off. I figured it would be safer than acetone.
-
Bad enough to where I srayed it on and you can see where it ran down the limb. Kinda "hazed' it lighter where it ran. I've used it on other bows to remove sticky stuff and dirt stains.
-
here's a true story about Goof Off. I redid my bathroom and put a plastic tub in. I wanted a cast-iron one but we are looking for a deep one and they are just too much money. I had the bathroom completely done but there was a sticker in the tub that need to come off. so I grabbed goof off and I sprayed a little on and walked out of the room for a couple minutes when I came back in I quickly realized that it was actually eating away at the plastic. I quickly got it up as quickly as I could and neutralized it with water. It destroyed the finish of the bathtub and to this day that area easily stains. I have no idea what's in Goof Off but it does no favors to Plastics. Not sure about different finishes and fiberglass but I approach that stuff very weary now.
-
Thanks Eddie and Paul. I was going to put a little on a rag and scrub the paint with it. I might just stick with the acetone.
-
I looked it up and this is what is in Goof Off.
Methoxydiglycol 1-5%
Xylene (mixed isomers) 90-95%
-
I scrubbed off all of the spray paint with acetone. There was a couple of beautiful bows under all of that gunk.

Great job Clint....glad you stayed with the acetone and a lot of elbow grease....looks really good.
DBar
-
Xylene is some nasty stuff to play with. I'll take acetone anyday. I really like the black one myself. I'll trade you a matching 52" for the black one. ??? ;D
-
Those turned out great.
-
The wood in the 55# is Shedua.
-
Love those older Bear bows. :OK
In the same theme of the thread here the wife and I found a nice leather recliner at the Goodwill yesterday. And,being as it was "old fart" discount day, we got it for 30 bucks. :)

I stopped at an antique swap meet on my way to work this morning. I left with 3 pieces of cast iron.

I had three loads of free horse manure follow me home in my trailer yesterday. Does that count..? :)

I think it's an unmarked Wagner. Have fun with the manure
-
Those look like campfire cast iron. Do you reseating them or leave them be for wall hangings
-
Your becoming the cast iron king

Greg Sulfridge is the Cast Iron King.
I'm going to strip them down and reseason them.

Got these cast aluminum pots, skillets, fryer, and griddle at my granny's auction. Man they cook good food. Can't use the griddle we have a smooth top stove.

-
Nice set Gutshot. Why can't you use the griddle with a smooth top stove?
-
If the griddle has a smooth flat bottom it would be fine on the flat top.
-
The griddle has a 1/4 lip around it which makes it set up off the smooth top stove. It fits a regular stove good and I've already got one for my new work shop so the pancakes will be cooked down there when I have some people over for some bow making weekend.
-
Got a 12' Radisson dirt cheap, $350. Including jackets and paddles. The canoe is very unused. These canoes have always captivated me. Incredibly light, thoughtfully designed and very, very stable. I'm excited about this one.
-
That's a sweet deal right there. I better get some hero fish pictures from that canoe this summer
-
Wow thats a great deal on that pearl
-
Really nice looking canoe and gear Pearl. I've always wanted one to. We use to go 55 miles every Memorial Day weekend when I lived in the city. It sure is cool just paddling downstream.

Bring that with you when you come to the Black Hills to hunt turkey. We have a lot of small lakes full of fat trout for you, too!
-
Nice canoe, Pearlie. The color is perfect for you. ;)
-
Lotso fun to be had from the belly of that pink beast!
-
It looks pink, buts its fire engine red. I think the sun glare did that to the pic? Either way, I'm just fine with pink :). My lunch box is pink!
We have countless miles of rivers in Michigan. A person couldn't float it all in a long lifetime. We are never more than 20 minutes from public accessible fishing/floating water in my entire perfect state.
-
Great deal Pearly ! A Bud had one years ago - make a good Fishing Platform. Time to get Her in the Water and get all Fish Slimed up ! Bob

Not sure what I need it for but for $35 icouldnt pass it up. The treadle part works great but the head is frozen at the moment. Sprayed the insides good with PB blaster and think I can get it freed up. Ran the serial number and it is a 1921 model 66.
-
My Mom had one just like that. I also saw one in the bin at the garbage dump. I was told that there was so many of them made that they aren't worth much. But don't go by me.
-
Yeah.......... im sure its not worth a whole lot, but I'll have fun getting it working again.
-
I have an old treadle shoe tacker I use sometimes for leather. I also have 2 treadle stands without machines on top. You should be able to get that old Singer going.
-
I'm sitting at a table right now that was made with an old Singer cast iron sewing machine base.
-
I wonder if they're tough enough to sew leather. Maybe if you put on a flywheel from an old Easthope ;D ;D
-
I sewed a little with an old treadle singer. It'll sew leather some,It's like chewing gum and rubbing your bell at the same time.Takes a little getting used to.I use the cast iron table frame for a table now.Put an oak top on it.Pretty nice.In the beginning I had to soak the old sewing machine in diesel fuel for about a week to loosen it up to work.
-
The bases make good looking tables with a live edge slab top.
-
The PB blaster freed it right up. The original leather belt was dry rotted so I rigged one up out of paracord. Seems to be working well but is missing the needle clamp so I cant test it any farther till I get one. Saw a youtube vid of this same model sewing thru 6 layers of denim.
-
I have a 1914 model 66, which is the heavy duty model that everyone wants. I think if it's restored to like original shape they can bring around $500. It's a great machine and will sew leather and denim with ease. I read a comparison once that said when a family bought one of these back in the early 1900s, it was quite the investment, equivalent to buying a new car now a days.
-
I went to the local flea market over lunch today and found a decent old drawknife for $12.50. I immediately thought of Clint and this thread and now I have a new drawknife in my car....
-
Cool! Post a picture of the draw knife please
-
With the preparations for the Classic and Marshall I've been on a bit of a dry spell as far as finding rusty treasures. On the way to my daughters track meet today I found a couple of junk stores that I hadn't noticed before. I didn't get much. I spent $18 total. There was a nice folding draw knife but it wasn't $45 nice.

It hit me harder than most items that follow me home, but this followed me home this weekend. Some of it will be coming to Marshall for trade. And there is another load to come next week.

Better be careful, Kyle. Clint will attack the truck when you pull in. He is a collector of "things". :)
-
This was definitely a collector of things also. Six drawknives, I don't get it. I mean five I understand, but six? Come on.
Kyle
-
Wow cool looking stuff you got there
-
Score!
-
Dibs on the draw knives. I like that little one. Actually I like them all but that little one looks interesting.
-
Is the straight one a fleshing knife? I've been looking for one of those.
-
I am sure that is a fleshing knife, about the right size for mink and rat. There was also one of the round handled draw knives in another box, I am gonna give that one a whirl and see what I think.

I love it

A chest freezer followed me home yesterday evening. My small animal parts freezer in the garage has overflowed into my sisters freezer. Those two cattle hides took up a lot of room. This freezer is twice as big as my old one. I paid $55 for it.

Boy oh boy will have some work for that tool bubbly. That is very cool.

Right on! Looks well built too. For sure you'll get some use out of that.

I went to a small auction today. The wasn't much of a crowd. After an early thunderstorm the crowd was even lighter. I found a few bargains. I ended up bringing a lot more stuff home than I really wanted. I would buy an axe for $2 and get a pile of pick axes and other junk with it. I got the heater for $2, large Bosch angle grinder for $11, and after bidding against a guy on some splitting wedges we worked out a deal for me to buy them all and we would split the cost and take turns choosing. That worked out good for both of us.
The deal of the day was these 2 bows for a total of $7. The Bear doesn't have a model name on it. I'm going to clean it up tomorrow. It's 58" long. Hopefully Mullet can give me an idea on what it is and how old.

was at my dads the other day... troybilt pressure washer - needs pump, yardworks lawn mower, patio umbrella, large planter all went in the truck. He has a pile of pick and axe heads and I says "I could trade all of those away for you for some cool stuff!" he just chuckled. Now - out here there is an auction on the 28th of may.. Hewletts auctions if ya like old - cool cars! they are online so you can see pics!
-
Clint - I see that Bear got bit by the Dreaded Quicky Quiver Bite . Great finds again - good job, Bob.
-
If I had to guess, the camoed one is a 1969 Grizzly and the blue one is a Pearson Wonder Bow.
-
Thanks Mullet. I thought it looked like it had some age on it. The paint on this one is a little more stubborn than the last 2.
-
I got all the paint cleaned off and found a model name.

A few things that followed me home from Marshall
One fresh stave from the Outlaw and Frank gave me a heck of a deal on the rest of his 25 year old staves. Of course I feed him pretty good and shared a few beers with him. They are the picked over ones he didn't feel like loading and unloading again, but if I get one bow out of them I got a good deal.
Bjrogg
-
Also some cool stuff from the trade blanket. I know Bills really gonna miss that tree stand.
Bjrogg
-
And last but not least my Badly Bent bow I won from the raffle. Nice bow Greg
Bjrogg
-
You did real good Bjrogg. I hope those shafts work out well for you. Those look like some challenging staves.
Kyle
-
Nice haul BJ. You weren't the only one who took home a Badly Bent bow ;) A few things followed me home from Marshall. I'll get a picture of them on Thursday and post it.
-
Yup Kyle might still be around here in another 25 years. I think there a few bows and some interesting ones to if I can coax them to life.
You got that right Clint, there were some real nice bows traded or gifted that left Marshall for a new home.
Bjrogg

Actually it was more like after a pack of wolves devower a moose and are to full the move. Frank is a pretty good guy once you get to know him. We've become pretty good friends. Really all the vendors at Marshall are straight up in my book. Good guys and gals with fair prices and no high pressure sales techniques.

No pics, but I had 700 various nocks follow me home from Marshall. I think I'm set for life now. Thanks Patrick!

I brought home a laminated bow that Pearly made. I think it is bamboo backed yew with a Mongolian tulip core. I also was gifted a Badly Bent bow. I've wanted one of his in my collection for a long time. Greg has his own unique style that stands out among other bows.

I made a trip to town to ship out some trade items and I stopped at a yard sale. I bought my mom 2 sewing machines, a stack of books for my wife, a few other things, and this axe head. It's in decent shape but the edge is very sharp. It should clean up easily.

I finally found a deal on a big cast iron skillet this morning. It's a #14. I don't know the brand name yet. It's seasoned and ready to use. I also picked up another old ax head.

Back up a few pictures, the hatchet with the square hole in the blade, do you know hat the hole is for?
DC I'm just guessing but a lot of old tools where kinda like multi-tools. Wrenches would have square holes of different sizes in their handles to fit different sized square bolts. My guess would be for putting a twist in a forged square steel shaft. This is only a guess though.

Back up a few pictures, the hatchet with the square hole in the blade, do you know hat the hole is for?
Copied from another site:
STANLEY / BELL SYSTEM HATCHET
The specific years during which Stanley provided specialty hatchets for the Bell System has yet to be determined. It is believed that these hatchets were available from sometime in the 1940s until at least sometime in the 1960s. At this point no catalog reference is known extant but it is surmised they may have been provided through special orders. Also unresolved is whether Stanley provided such hatchets to other utility companies or other concerns in addition to the Bell System. Numerous examples have been observed that include a square opening cut through the hatchet blade. Such hatchets are referred to as hatchet-wrenches because the square opening accommodated the square bolt heads used to secure different apparatus to utility poles.
-
That works. I was a lineman for my first 3 years with the telephone company. That look like it would fit the big square nuts we had on the 5/8" bolts. We never used a hatchet(we had chain saws ;D) but I imagine in earlier times they would be quite handy. One less thing to pack up a pole.
-
Does anyone know what these tools are? I am thinking they are some type of soldering iron, but I wanted to see if anyone had a better idea. The ends are heavy copper rod (the top one is 3/4 in, middle is 5/8 in, and bottom is 1/2 in diameter) that are beveled to a sharp edge. There is a screw holding the copper rod in the end of the tool. These really did not "follow" me home. I found them in the tool shed on my farm where I grew up, so they were already "home" when I found them. They just followed me across the state to my where I currently reside :) I was thinking about using them for indirect percussion tools for knapping, but since there is only a small screw holding the rod in, I doubt they would last long if I used tem for that.
Thanks for the help figuring out what these are.
Neal
-
Yes, they are soldering irons. I guess, different tips for different uses.
-
Yup Neal soldering irons. I believe they heated them in coals in forge. We have one in our shop we still use from time to time. When you heat them up they stay hot for awhile. I would think they probably used them for lead to but not sure. My grandpa use to make grain bucket elevators and sell them. They soldered the bucket seems with one. It was in a old coal forge when I found it.
Bjrogg
-
My dad had a couple of those. He heated it with an old blow torch like this. Lighting the torch was fun. Lots of flames and stuff.
-
I found a mountain bike on a pile of stuff with a "Free" sign in it. Looks to be in decent shape but the gal said that the derailer slips/clunks while you are pedaling. Been a long time since I messed with a bike and back then we only had 10 speeds to worry about. ??? First off I'll see if the tires hold air and then go from there... :-\
-
Good luck with the bike Paul.
-
thanks for verifying those were soldering irons. I may go ahead a see how they work as an indirect percussion rod.
Neal
-
Good luck with the bike Paul.
Thanks, the tires hold air and it coasts down hill OK. Oh, and the brakes work too.. (A)
Talked to the neighbor and he agrees it probably just needs oil and adjustment. :OK
-
I bet there is a video on Youtube to tell you exactly how to adjust the derailer.
-
A couple of axes that were dropped off at Home. Wish I had taken some Before pictures. Here are what they look like after I fixed them up a bit. A Pulaski Axe and a Brush Axe.

Very nice axes! Nice restore job.

Good job Brian :OK ! Bob

1930s Case Bird Trout Knife recently picked up at a Garage sale by Buffalo Gobbler and then gifted to me.
-
An 8 out of 10 Wing, Swift Wing recurve, 66" and 29# @ 28 ". Beautiful bow picked up at a yard sale. This is going to my grand daughter. Gave $100 for the Wing.
No cracks or twists but has a 3" sight bar screwed to the front of the bow. Walked away from a 70's Black Widow, Ghost, take down. It was painted all white, riser and limbs. the riser was made of a very heavy metal. He wanted $200 for the widow but I already have the same bow and don't shoot that one.

-
Nice leather haul!
-
Looks like you got some good leather. Nice find!

The thing with the black handle is called a draw gauge and it's for stripping out leather straps. We used one years ago for making belt blanks. Use a curved Exacto blade under the thumb screw on the end as the cutting edge.

Stopped by the Flea Market looking for something real rusty to try out the Evaporust solution. Soaked it for about a day, hosed off solution, and then light sanding, priming and the paint. The solution worked real good.

That looks new. Nice job. I've never tried evaporust. I don't think I've ever seen it.

"Picked" this leather at a Garage Sale Yesterday. No price on the whole pile. I offered 40 bucks for the whole lot. Ended up paying 50 bucks. Not sure what it is all worth but to me it is at least worth what I paid for it. I think it is mostly 10 oz? Big pieces look to me to be sides? Medium pieces maybe shoulders? Not shown in the picture are some smaller pieces including a small piece of what looks to me to be alligator.
-
Well worth $50. Nice haul. :OK
-
Nice haul! I wish I could find leather at a yard sale
-
That was a steal, great get brian
-
This followed me home a long time ago, just found it while cleaning my garage at the house. Pretty cool bayonet/ has 3 zeros on it for markings, WW2 Jap I am pretty sure . I have had it for years and can't even remember where I got it but glad it showed back up. Also a rake of some kind. ;)
Pappy
-
Nice haul, Brian. Next to bow wood, leather is my precious commodity.
Pappy that would be fun to totally refinish and get it back to as original as you can.
-
Yep that is kind of my plan, at least new scales on the handle, I would like to figure what kind of wood was used on it and go back with the same wood. :)
Pappy
-
Osage scales would look good on it Pappy.
-
Does it look like bamboo by chance?
-
Not really, looks more like Walnut but since it probably was made in Japan I don't really have any idea. :-\
Pappy
-
Princess tree(Paulonia) is used in Japan for boxes given to a bride at her wedding. It is an invasive here in the US and might make good handle scales.

Pappy
That is a complete WW2 Japanese bayonet. The 3 circles is the chrysanthemum symbol. It might be worth just a light cleaning and keeping it in the original condition..?
-
Ya I thought about that, when I brought it up on line it did say very rare, so still thinking about what I want to do with it.
Pappy
-
Yeah, if it is rare I'd leave it just as it is. Anything you do will probably decrease it's value.
-
Over at the muzzleloader forums they constantly chide people who restore a good attic find rifle as it drops the value by 70%. Collectors want the history of the rifle intact, warts and all.
-
I've collected Japanese swords for a while and the worst thing you can do is clean one and not know what you are doing. To not remove any patina and mess the blade up anymore then what it is you are best to clean it with a soft cloth and vegetable oil. Machine oil will blacken the blades made during that time period. I always lightly oiled mine with Olive oil. Use Mineral oil on the wood.
-
Me and the wife made a short road trip this morning with a hand fulll of cash and this followed us home. It needs a little cleaning and I'm going to redo some of the storage boxes but we're happy with it.
-
Wow that's pretty cool Eddie.....I'm going to look into something like that, the back of the truck is getting pretty tough for an old guy like me to get out of bed in the morning, not to speak of the pee calls in the middle of the night. :)

I hear you, Bill. After the Classic this year the wife said she was tired of the Little Guy Teardrop camper. Said she was getting too old to get dressed laying down. ??? So, the Teardrop is now for sale. This one is really light and easy to pull behind my Jeep. Bonus, has a chemical toilet also along with a fridge, microwave, and AC.
-
That is a sweet score, Eddie! Much roomier than the teardrop...heck, I bet you can't even reach the ceiling when you jump! :o
-
Ha, ha. Yea, John, I have to admit as much as I liked the teardrop standing up is nice. :)

That's a cool little camper Mullet. I'll have to check it out at the classic. It reminds me of Badly Bent's camper.

Yeah about the same size as gregs, i think his is a burro
-
Nice little camper, Eddie. What brand is it. Looks like a Scamp or Casita.
-
Pat, it is basicly a Scamp but is made by UHaul. A 1984. My good friend is retired from the Army and tells me they still rent them at McDill AFB in Tampa for $9.99 a day.
-
Does UHaul still make them?
-
I don't know. When I googled I saw ads that they still rented them.

I went to the estate auction of an old bus driver of mine from high school. I got a small electric pressure washer for $1. I'm hoping it will work on fleshing some hides. I got half the contents of the garage for $1. It was mostly small wood scraps. I dug through it and found an old set of Craftsman sockets with a breaker bar plus some other tools. There was about 40 lbs of crushed aluminum cans bagged up and an old car battery. I'll use that to get my $12 core charge back from walmart. Between the cans and battery I'll break even on what I spent today. I picked up an old fox hide for $1. It's seen better days. I'll get string silencers out of it if nothing else.
Some of my $1 treasures

My big purchase of the day was a home made 1x42 belt sander for $10. It came with 4 new belts. I tested it out and it works. It will work good for knife grinding.
I also got about 20 cans of spray paint and 20 cans of wood stain. I found this can of pine tar in with it. What can I use this stuff for?
-
Clint, I Googled Bickmore pine pitch. It is used for horse hoof treatment and is still available at Tractor Supply.
Nice haul with the other stuff, especially that belt sander.
-
Thanks for the information Pat. I'm fresh out of horses. I was wondering if I could use it for making pitch glue or something.
-
Nice finds. That fox face is spooky. Be care full and don't catch the mange off of it. The rigging straps and shackles will be perfect to pull Osage logs with and not damage them.
-
My dad went out to CO to visit his brother, and brought me back a box full of auger bits and a brace that belonged to grandpa. Most of the bits need some TLC, but some are usable. Has already come in handy making a new shaving horse.

The two I used, a number 7 and a number 16 were okay. They were the sharpest of the lot. The 16 cut pretty well, even through a knot. The other bits are dull, but very little rust. Nothing my grandpa owned was rusty, thanks to Colorado's lack of himidity. It's just all covered in dust and grit.
-
Picked up four (4) grey Navy wools blankets today at a yard sale for $12.00. $3.00 each. all in good shape. I'll throw them in the washing machine to soften them up. Probably give a couple away. Couple of them had the large U S stamped in the middle of them.
Also got my Joanna a pink camo Cabela's hooded sweatshirt for $1.00 . Going to look good with her new Bear Paw bag that Pat sent to me yesterday. (photo's of that is coming soon)
-
Those are some good bargains Jeb. I picked up a nice scoop shovel off of the interstate today. I was surprised it didn't have any damage.
-
Nice finds Jeb. Looking forward to seeing those pictures of the bear paw bag Pat sent you.

BJ: that bag is a work of art.

I'm sure it is Jeb.

Yep I knew some stuff would follow me home after Miss Joanie and My weekend away looking at old stuff. I an old clothes ringer, not sure what I will do with it but may use it in some way with my brain tanning :-\ if not it's cool just the same. Also a broad ax in need of a handle and a hand powered bench grinder. Look at some anvils but they were out of my price range. ::)
Pappy
-
I know someone that uses an old ringer washer for brain tanning. He says it does about two thirds of the hard work for him!
-
Ya I thought it might work well after the brain's flushed through the hide good, when you ring it the last time before stretching and pulling, just to get most of the moisture out of it. Maybe :-\ I will give it a try , one thing for sure , it won't hunt it. ;) :) If not I will just put it up somewhere to look at. ;)
Pappy
-
Those are some interesting finds Pappy. Might be a dumb idea but could you roll a piece of dried leg sinew through that thing to break it into fibers?
I haven't been able to make any auctions lately. My daughter has cross country meets every Saturday morning.
-
I love going and looking , even if I don't buy anything. Hazel KY. has more of this kind of stuff than you can look at in a day, some priced high but if you just keep looking you will find some deals once in a while. :)

With my daughter having Cross Country meets every Saturday I haven't been able to go to any auctions. Nothing interesting has followed me home for a while. I took the wife camping Tuesday night and found this cool axe in a junk store. Norlund is a pretty good brand.

Norland is a very good axe, that one is in great shape
-
Had a few things follow me home from the Flea Market today. I picked the double ax head up foe $4 and stopped on the way home and got a handle. The Drawknife was $10. A week ago the lady wanted $15 and Ipassed on it. Today the husband was there and Joyce wasn't and he said give me 10 an don't tell her. :OK The little hatchet was $5 and I've never seen one that small, really cool.
-
Nice finds! Is that an Oak Leaf draw knife?
-
Yes, Sir and it is still sharp with no blade nicks.
-
Run that knife threw a few staves and it will clean itself right up.
-
Went back this morning and found this one for $10 also,
-
Oooh :o a folder in nice shape for only $10. That's a great buy.
-
Clint has drawknife envy on that folder
-
Yes I do.
-
:OK

Was sittin at an Old Settler’s days this weekend beside a blacksmith. Some guy rolls up and drops 2 blowers on the table and said sell em if ya can. I jumped out of my seat and asked how much.
$50.
I was walking away with it before his mouth stopped moving.

After I came back from the truck I asked him if he had an old anvil layin around. He looks at me out of the corner of his eye an says
2 of em.
Im supposed to stop by in a couple weeks... ;D
-
I'll be expecting to get some forging pictures soon. Nice find Scott.
-
That will look nice set up under your new shed, Scott...with the anvil, of course. :OK
-
Might need to get Cody to come down and show me where to turn it on.
-
Looks like that blower might need rewired Scott ;D
-
Actually it runs on bacon.
-
Actually it runs on bacon.
Don't we all... ;)
-
What a find! I'm still trying to talk my Buddy that owns a Machine Shop out of the one he has laying on a table.
-
I'll have to get some pictures of the anvil and blower that my brother in law said I could use. His grandfather left them to him but he will never use them.
-
When you get that anvil, I expect to see some pictures from roadrunner hunting!
-
Every time I find a blower/forge/anvil at my local auction there are always people with more money than me! Stuff like that around here goes for hundreds of dollars! Even when they are broken or in serious disrepair! Ah, Forging, yet another hobby I want to get into.....
-
I stopped at a small flea market today and left with a few items.

Great find, Clint. Never understood why people beat a good ax or hatchet with a sledge hammer.
I picked this jewel up at the Flea Market this morning for $12, along with a piece of sawn Mookite for $2.
-
Nice find Clint and mallet.
-
That's a nice griddle. What is mookite?
-
Australian Jasper. Very colorful rock and makes nice points.
-
One of my proudest Dad moments over the weekend! I was in a flea market with my wife and 12 year old daughter when my daughter came running up saying "Dad there's something over there you need to see". Turns out to be a really nice old drawknife which is now in my toolbox! Not many 12 year old girls recognize or appreciate a good drawknife!
-
We need pictures of that draw knife. Is there a name on it?
-
That might need to be a full draw knife and daughter picture! Girls that sharp deserve recognition! Might need to take her along more often!
Hawkdancer
-
I'll get some pictures of it (and her). She's an eagle eye that's for sure!
-
Hawkdancer, she is that smart. And, we need pictures. ;)
-
The wife wanted to go to a large flea market in Ohio today. I had heard it was mostly junk there so I wasn't expecting much. The only thing that caught my eye was an old guy selling tools in the parking lot. I picked up these pretty cheap.
I got these off of the big auction site for a great price. They are all USA made Nicholson's. The rasp looks like it has never been used.
A couple weeks ago I picked up a few things at an auction. I got the table saw for $20 and doubled my money on it the next day. I got the belt sander for $5. I didn't really need it but couldn't pass it up for that price.
Same auction. 36" bow saw and some folding saw horses.
Also from that auction. Brand new oversized field and stream cot for $8
(https://i.imgur.com/xKpRaMqh.jpg)
-
Nice haul Clint, those files look like new. Those cots are really nice sleeping in.
Bjrogg
-
OO, you bought a bow saw? A BOW SAW? AHAHAHAHAHA! You got suckered! I make mine to break on their own and didn't even have to pay money for a saw to do the job for me!
-
Technically I didn't buy the bow saw JW ;) I bought something else and the bow saw was thrown in with it. I don't plan on cutting any bows with it
-
I don't know anyone that has the consistent luck that you do, OO! You have made some amazing hauls in the last few years with this thread. Folks like me should put you on retainer as a "picker". We give you our shopping list and send you the money....you scrounge and fill the orders for a percentage of the take.
Let me be your first customer. I would like a Shopsmith Mark V, with the bandsaw attachment. I would settle for the newer Mark 7 if that is all you can find. My budget is $100. Your percentage, the customary 15%, plus a bonus 5% if you can get it shipped to me for free. GO!
-
JW, I keep my eyes open for a bargain. I get lucky every now and then. I keep some stuff and resell the rest to fund my hobbies.
There was a shopsmith at an auction recently but I didn't go to that one. It probably went pretty cheap. My coworkers and family have already given me a "watch" list of things they are looking for.
-
I went to an estate auction that had a complete hobbyist wood shop. There was a complete Shopsmith with every attachment known to man up for auction. I think they said the owner paid over 11K for it, it auctioned for around 1K. I got a free standing Shopsmith planer worth $1500 for $300. I thought I needed it but found out it just collected dust in my shop. I posted it on Craig's list for what I had in it, it was gone in a day.
-
I picked these up at a farm auction today for pretty cheap. I've been wanting a brush axe. That little saw will fit nicely in my bow tool box.

The homemade post driver is pretty cool too.
-
I might add some more weight to it. I think it needs more oomph per strike.
-
After years of driving posts with a sledge when I put up the electric fence around my greens patch I happened upon a post driver at a flea market for $10. After using it once I couldn't believe how easy it was to drive posts with it, I wish I had bought one years ago.
-
Well nothing like the hauls Clint comes up with but I did have a few things follow me home from the local dump. I'm usually the first one there when it opens on Saturday morning. The fellow who runs it always picks a few items and sits them off to the side by the free sign. I try not to bring more home than I take cause unlike Clint mine usually doesn't get resold and if I'm not selective I can get buried in a hurry. Anyhow can never have to many nice wooden folding chairs and always can use another toolbox. Wish it had tools in it but both the chairs and toolbox are in great shape.

The definition of a post driving maul? A big strong stick with something incredibly dense on one end and something metal on the other.
;D
-
I welded a 15 lb chunck of steel to the top of that post driver. I think it will drive a post pretty quickly now.
I picked up a new toy this evening. I've been looking for one of these for a while now. My Dad has the same model only in camo. I like them because they are built for farm work instead of trail riding. The rear differential locks when needed. It doesn't go very fast but it has a lot of power. They can haul a lot of weight. I'll be dragging out deer and logs with it. The body is kind of rough but the honda engine runs smooth. I got a very good deal on it. The skull mounts I'm doing now will cover more than 1/3 of what I paid for it.
I did not get it at goodwill ::) That's where we stopped to eat on the way home.
-
Probably haul a few Osage logs out with that one Clint. I'm sure you'll put it to good use. I sure wish I had one.
Bjrogg
-
It will definitly drag some osage logs this spring BJ. I'm going to put a log arch on a boat trailer I'm converting into a flatbed. That should save some back aches.
-
Nice find, Clint. I could sure use one of them for hauling firewood.
What did you get to eat at Good Will? :-\
-
A whopper and fries at the burger king next door Pat ;)
-
You'll have to take that to Pappy's and race with his new rebuild. ;)
-
Pappy's would smoke mine. This is more of a slow and steady speed.
-
A work horse! :OK
-
Monday evening I acquired a quad, pull behind mower, a new smoker, and some other stuff for free. My brother in laws parents moved into town and left a lot of stuff behind. We made a trip to salvage some items before a contractor was hired to clean the property up. I think both of these will need a little work to get them running but they don't look like they have been used much. They have been sitting in a barn for several years.

You sure are a lucky sucker, Clint. Nice haul. :OK

Wow :OK Bob

I was helping my brother in law clean up a piece of river property that he owns. It belonged to his grandfather who passed away years ago. He recently had the old house and sheds torn down. He needed some help throwing away a few large items left behind. I saw something in the construction dumpster that caught my eye. It was a large leaf spring. I've been looking for one of these for a while. I want to use it for knife forging. It's 4' long, 3" wide, and each piece is nearly 1/2" thick at center. Finding this old chunk of steel made my night. There's a lot of knives in there.

Great find Clint! You should have enough steel there for quite a bit of forging time.
Patrick
-
Can't wait to see what they are transformed into Clint.
Bjrogg
-
Maybe even a sword? ;D
-
There's at least one ready made froe there, just cut it to size and put an edge on it! The price is right!

I added another trailer to the fleet today. I've been wanting a small one to use around the property. I saw this one on craigslist. It needs some repairs. The deck, wheels, and receiver need replaced. The frame is solid and the 2000 lb axle spins smooth. It's a little over 5'x7'. I got it for $50. I even got the guy to toss in a 2" wide ratchet strap and a 12' length of heavy chain with hooks. I can get a set of tires for $60. The deck boards and receiver won't be too much. I should have a nice little trailer for well under $200.
We finally got around to messing with them that quad and pull behind mower today. We got both running good. it only took an $18 carburetor and some oil to get the quad running.

Good deal!

$130 rain bonnet for my Jeep.

Whoa!
I used to own a canoe, took me to some wonderful places.
Algonquin Provincial Park, where I saw my first of several moose, loons at dusk and wolves howling in the moonlight and river otters splashing in front of the canoe as we paddled a winding creek.
One week solo in the Adirondacks camping on islands fishing for smallies, northerns and walleye with a case of a special run of Saranac Chocolate Stout. I'd chill a few in the nearest creek each evening when I camped, I still remember the bitter chocolate after taste and thinking to myself, how can this taste so good?
My canoe took me to many cool places and I can only imagine that your canoe will do the same for you JW.
And you paid only $130.00?
That's a stea....
You got it almost for free!
Instead of your canoe taking you to cool places maybe you should take your canoe to some cool places , just to insure that karma swings the right way.

Found this ole girl at a yard sale.. Waffles at camp..
Thanks Leroy

Paul and Nina made some great pancakes at Marshall this year. Can't imagine waffles...

Nice find Stoker! Camp waffles sound good. I haven't had much luck lately. There hasn't been any good auctions around my area. I did pick up these two fur collars from an antique store for a few bucks. The big one is sheared beaver and I'm not sure what the smaller one is. Maybe mink? There are lots of string silencers in them.

Pretty sure it isn't possum.

No elm hall for me. Maybe next year.

Between the wife making plans and work I haven't been able to make any auctions this summer. I finally made it to one today. It was crowded and very hot. The only thing I bought was a pair of old cruiser bikes. I've been looking for a pair to take with us when we go camping. These were dirty but looked to be in good shape. They were a his and hers set with matching accessories. I left the auction and was headed to Lowe's to get a 2x12 to make a work bench top. On the way I stopped at an estate sale that was wrapping up. I spotted a couple of treated 2x12's and a 2x4 in the basement. It was the exact lengths that I needed for the work bench. I gathered up a few more items and they told me $5 for all of it. I got some good stuff that I know I will put to use.
Everything on the tailgate was from the $5 estate sale purchase.
A few minutes with a wet rag had the bikes looking good. When the wife got home we took them for a test ride. Everything works good on them. They are Huffy Good Vibrations.
According to the odometer they have low miles.

My dad died at age 100, this past weekend I looked through his shop equipment. There was stuff packed in boxes and tons of old tools, even a fairly new band saw. I doubt if he had anything I didn't already have so I left almost everything for my brother to sort through and dispose of.
He did have a nice drawknife and one thing I didn't have already, a froe. The drawknife is a Dunlap in really good shape, it should clean up really well. the froe is kinda' rough but I will have to refurbish it because it is a family tool. Of course these had to follow me home.
-
Dunlap made a very solid draw knife. That's a nice froe. Its neat you get to keep them in the family.
-
Sorry for your loss Eric...Do those tools justice and think of him while you use them...Your Father must have lived a wonderful life...My dad is 81 and hope to have him for a long time....That's a really nice draw knife, I would maybe sharpen it and leave the patina he gave it...
Don
-
This drawknife sat unused in a damp basement for years, I decided to give it a new life and the respect it deserves. I filed of all the burs and nicks off the top of the blade where someone had been splitting stuff by striking the back with a hammer, polished up all the metal, stripped the finish off the handles, sanded them, and put on a few coats of Tru-Oil.

Couldn’t pass up either of these buys. The smoker I got for 15$. Still not sure how I got the canvas tent, plus the 2 cots for 10$. It was a good week. ;)
Tattoo Dave
-
Now that's a good deal! How big is the wall tent?
-
Wow - Good deal Dave ! :OK Bob
-
Haven’t measured the tent yet, but it’s about 10x12.
Tattoo Dave

Great score on that tent! I am looking at a similar one, used, and they are asking $350. It looked like a fair deal until you posted this...now I cringe!

Here is an update on the tools;
I made a pass through my Dad's shop after his funeral, not a lot of stuff I could use or didn't already have. I did notice a draw knife (I collect them) and a froe. Both had seen better days but I wanted the chance to restore them so I brought them home.
The new osage handle on the froe will darken over time to a deep chestnut color, much like a buckeye. It was also hand forged so I elected to remove the surface rust, leave the patina and not take it back to bare metal .A bare metal finish would have eliminated the blacksmith's hammer strikes on the blade which would have taken away its history.
A froe is used for the secondary splitting of wood. Back in the day it would be used for splitting out red oak shingles for roofing from a section cut out of a log.
I filed all the nicks out of the drawknife, removed the rust and refinished the handles.
The before and after pics;
-
Nice work Eric
-
Nice job on the restoration. They will last many more generations now.
-
I picked up this hitch receiver, a 4 way lug nut wrench, and these two heads for $15 while on a weekend get a way trip with the wife. The ax and hatchet heads both say Made in West Germany.

neighbor is an e-bayer so when I pick odds and ends I give them to him and does the same for me when it is archery related. The other day he stopped by with a box of 40 aluminum arrows that he paid 50 cents for the whole box. Trouble is most of them were 2016's and 2018's. I use 1916's when I use metal. I gave the 2016's away
-
Nice work on the draw knife and froe Eric
Glad you got a little time to spend relaxing with your wife Clint. Those axe heads should clean up nice.

I put the froe out in the sun every day for a month, the handle is a nice dark chestnut color now.

Looks like some good stuff Pappy. Is that a double bit ax? does it have a name on it?

I stopped at some yard sales today and picked up a few things. I got a new sewing machine for my mom for $20. It was still sealed up in the box. My mom was very happy when I gave it to her. I got this box of tools for $10. The draw knife is solid and ready to use. The router bit set is older but they were never used. Still have the oil on them. There were a few ratchets, sockets, extensions, and drill bits in the box. You can't have too many of those.

Clint, your going to be busy making a lot of handles, nice score...I just got through separating and freezing around a 150 Catawba worms...Vacation started today and the Catfish don't stand a chance, I expect they will just give up and jump in the boat...I don't know about other areas, but Catawba worms are hard to come by around here now...When I was a kid they were every where and easy to find in early Summer...

So I get this odd looking nickel in change to today. The color was dark and the nickel was light in weight. In checking, it turned out to be a zinc 1940 German coin with the Eagle and a swastika. And that followed me home.

Stopped by a garage sale and they had a killer prices... I love pheasants so I had to grab the picture. It was 20$ but I fixed two of their reeeeallly nice chairs so I got it for 15.
-
Oooh, and classic literature, too!
-
Not a yard sale find but I did get a pretty good deal on this on Ebay. Last one they had and a hair shop worn so I got it at a discount.
I'd not been expecting much at such a low price but was pleasantly surprised at the thick good quality leather and fine stitching. Good design as well.
I added a shoulder strap so I can wear it diagonal across the back. The belt strap allows separating two bundles of arrows according to heads.

PS
Almost forgot. I made a dead center bullseye today, first time in so long I can't remember the last time.

We went to a flea market at a huge muzzle loader shoot today. My new bride found some stuff to decorate the house. She loves old stuff. The wide mouth crock was her favorite treasure of the day. I found some axes and a violin in a cool old case that looks like a coffin. I'm giving it to my dad for fathers day. He can play them.

Thanks for sharing your finds Clint.
One of the things I have missed the most is the cool stuff you always seem to have following you home.
Wow now you and your new bride are hitting the sales. This should really step up the followed me home thread. I’m really liking the thought of that.
That is a really nice crock. I’ve never seen one like that. Most of the ones I find around here were used for sauerkraut and don’t have a narrow neck.

PS is that axe original or was it cut off and welded up by someone? I wonder what it’s job was
-
Someone turned that axe into a brush hook, when I was 16 I worked with a fire road clearing team out in the woods, the city hired us kids to teach us to work and put a little money in our pockets. We used all hand tools, axes, saws, scythes and such. We started out with a brush hook in our arsenal but the boss took it away after so many kids who didn't know how to use it ended up with stiches in their ankles and legs from the cuts it made.
As a kid growing up on a hobby farm we used one to clear honeysuckle patches, I knew how to use one but they could be very dangerous.

brush hooks are just cool! I have several, factory and home made! if you knw how to use them they are very useful! I like old tools too! I just don't have time to use them....

I took my new bride to a big antique swap meet today. She loved it. She found a cabinet for the bathroom and some other small things to decorate the house with. I found some sharp rusty pieces. I got them surprisingly cheap. The draw knife was only $5 and the broad axe head was $10. The hatchet is an Old Faithful Warren Axe, and the double bit is a True Temper Vulcan Kelly Works. I don't think I have either one in my collection yet.

Nice stuff for sure, I would stay busier than I am now if I came up with that much stuff that needed handles. ;) :) Love it.

Pappy, I've got a bucket full of heads that need handles. I guess I'm stocking up for when I get to retire and need something to keep me busy.
-
Ya I still have several myself, I try to keep up but seems people are always bringing me more, GregB cleaned out the garage in the house he just bought and brought me a load of old stuff, I will get in the mood one day and put handles in them.

That’s cool Clint. Nice stuff.
Really cool your new bride enjoys it to.
Great seeing what follows you home again.

96 ears of corn followed me home from the nearby Amish community, it was nice stuff and only $4 a dozen. I just finished putting the last pack of it in the freezer, It took all afternoon to shuck it, blanch it, cool it and vacuum seal it in single and double ear packs. I seal it in small packs because I live alone.
With an uncertain future for the food supply I am stocking up big time, two full freezers so far and I am about to start canning green beans.
I grow a big garden but it is not worth my time to grow corn, I have put so much manure in my garden I can't keep ahead of the weeds in a corn patch.

I did a hundred ears last year. Half of it I wrapped and stacked like cordwood in the freezer. The other half was stripped off the cob and frozen in packages of 2 cups each. Picked at the peak of season, this was some of the best corn I have ever enjoyed. I have a dozen ears left and our corn does not show up at the farmers market until the beginning of August. I may have doled out the summer gold perfectly!

I shouldn't go to flea markets, often something follows me home. Today I decided to go to the flea market at the local cattle sale barn.
I saw a couple looking at a Presto canner on one guy's table, I instantly noticed it as a large one that I didn't already have. They looked it over closely, put it back in the box and walked away.
Being canner savvy, I walked up and gave it the once over, it was in really good shape but I knew all used canners need new seals. This one didn't have a jiggler but I already have two of the exact style of jiggler that will fit this model.
I asked the guy what he wanted for it, he replied $25. This canner would sell for $150 new; I couldn't let this deal get away so I took it home with me. I ordered all new seals for the canner when I got home for $24 shipped free.
For $49 I will have the same as a new canner that I really don't need but then again, I am a sucker for good deals.

That's how I got mine for the same price, the same pressure cooker. Presto? I'm canning like crazy right now.

I picked this up at a flea market today. It's the very first Craftsman logo from the late 1920's known as the Sing Song Wave logo. It's the first one I've ever seen in person. It needs a new handle with some more curves.

Good eye BJ. This one is in great shape. It should clean up real easy. It is still sharp too. I used it to open a stubborn mayo packet when we got lunch today.

Nice find Clint, love an old ax. :)

My wife spotted this boys axe head for me at an antique market. It's a Vaughan Sub Zero with a very clear stamp. I found the Keen Kutter hammer. She wants to hang it on the wall in the house with some other woodworking tools.

some nice finds
good to see ya enjoying life

I need to stay away from the flea market at the cattle sale barn on Tuesdays, my weakness is for drawknives and pressure cookers. Today's find was a 12 qt Presto with all the parts including the jiggler for $10. This one needs a good cleaning on the inside with steel wool and vinegar to make it shine as well as a new seal.
I have decided that pressure cookers are the only kitchen appliance in existance that are made to last forever, I have a 75-year-old one that works just as well as a new one.
I passed on a like new drawknife because it didn't have a brand name on it which suggested it was of elcheapo Chinese manufacture.
