Hello heliopilot and AJMag.

Welcome aboard.

You've found one of the best sources of information geared toward the so called Primitive Arts on the web.
At least in my honest opinion.
In my short year of time here on the PA Forum I've had the pleasure to meet and deal with some of the Nicest folks I could have asked to meet.
The good folks here have a Wealth of knowledge running down most any path from Bow Building to Flint Knapping to Primitive Living in all its intricacies.

I am no expert nor am I a bowyer, though I've got a couple of shooting bows and few sharp arrow heads knapped out so far... :)
I'm out on the West side of Houston near I-10 and the West Sam Houston Toll Road.
If y'all make it out this way I'll be happy to pass a good stave into your hands and help you get started working it.

As for staves and wood in general around the Houston area.
Two good places to hunt hardwood boards are:
Houston Hardwoods:  http://www.houstonhardwoods.com/
Clark's Hardwood Lumber:  http://www.clarkshardwood.com/

I also keep my ear out for the Dreaded Wood Chippers when I out and about around town.
With the drought of the past year there are Thousands of hardwood trees being taken down and mostly chipped.
I've had some luck with stopping and picking up wood from them.
Another potential source is Tree Trimming Companies.

Yet another option are the good folks here on PA.
Every now and then folks will get together for a wood cutting party.

The next to last option for the uninitiated is Ebay.
You can find good wood on Ebay, but you can get stung as well.

The last option, at least on my list, are Some of the premium purveyors of staves on the net.
Once again there are some good ones, and there are some not so good ones.

One of the good ones, in my opinion, is Gary Davis of Rattlestick Bows.
He sells Excellent Osage Staves that are nearly Floor Tillered when you receive them.

We have started trying to have a Houston get together once a month to work on bows and what have ya and y'all are welcome to come by make shavings.
At the moment the next get together will most likely be sometime in February.
The date is yet to be determined.

Hey Guys,

My name is Aaron and I am in the Humble Area (NE Houston). I'm just starting out with bow building and thought I'd connect with a local community of bow builders. I have my tillering tree built and my garage workshop ready for the first round of bows. I'm starting (on a budget) with a Holmegaard of red oak from Lowe's. Then I hope to make it out to the hardwood shop on 290 for some more interesting bow/backing combos. Anyways, just wanted to say Hey and if there is a get together I'd love to meet other like-minded folks. My only other obligations are my wife, college and bows. Cheers.

Welcome aboard!

Would be happy to include you in the Houston Group when we get going again.
We've not had a meet this year as of yet.
Two of the guys, which is the lion's share of the group, have new babies and my plate has been pretty full.
With that said I have a feeling that once things settle down and the weather warms a bit, the get to gethers will
get going again... :)

When you make it out this way I'll be happy to get an Osage stave into your hands to give you an alternative wood to work with.

To my fellow Houstonians,

With tree trimming time upon us, I am looking for insight. Does anyone know of local species of trees that make good bow wood that I should be on the lookout for? I see the occasional hardwood trunk on the trailers of tree trimmers and would love any info on local trees you guys have had success with.

You bet.

Mulberry is a top notch local bow wood.
Crepe Myrtle is a good choice.
Elm Trees make good bow wood
Hackberry is another.
White Oak
Red Oak
Sycamore should not be over looked.

Just to name a few
And Osage starts showing up around Livingston heading north.

Hello Everybody,

Just thought I would bump this thread to the top and start getting some ideas bouncing around for a Houston Primitive Get Together.
It's been quite a wile since our last get together, and there are some new Houston Folks coming aboard P.A...

So How about we get something brewing for June?

Any ideas or preferences for a Date or Day of the week?
Like a Saturday or Sunday, what is good for everyone?
Would we want to try for June 9th or 10th?

We can get together at my place, unless someone else has a better place or wants to host.

Okay, lets plan it for next Saturday the 9th then.

We can get going as early as folks want to.
I've got the band saw humming pretty nice so we have it available for wood work.
I have some Rock and tools available for knapping.

I'll throw something down on the smoker for us to eat. :)

Awe man we are going to meet with a realtor in SA on the 9th. But I got a few more bamboo poles and some staves I need to unload on ya if you want them, I got more than I can make and don't want to take them with me...Maybe I can drop them off next week before the meet so you can pass em around?

Whats a good time for you ? Weaving a sling can be time consuming and messy . You will also need to post guards on the neighbors rock beds.
