Ground Stone Tools

What types of rocks make the best ground stone tools and what type of tools from what rock? I know jade was used for axes and chisels and such. Has anyone ever tried to use a piece of Kimberlite that is really homogenized for anything before? Thanks

Shale, granite, jade, and greenstone were all pecked and ground and made into knives, ulus, axes, beads and many other things.  Bill

 I've also seen some old slate ulu's and snow knives. I've made quite a few jade and slate arrowheads. you'd be suprised how sharp you can get them.

here in the northeast we have a very grainy basalt that hols an incredible edge. tough as nails. ive knapped it to size and then ground an edge for arrow heads . axe heads i knap , peck and then grind.

By any chances can you mullet and jamie post some pictures or your ground stone arrow heads and you axe heads jamie? Also if you got any pictures of them while you are making them? I wouldn't mind seeing them. Mullet how sharp is sharp? Jamie got any pictures of that basalt that you use for them? Sure wish I lived closer to you guys Thanks for the info everyone.

Got a couple of Turquoise arrow heads ground to a nice sharp edge ready to be hafted.
Just waitin on my cane and rose shoots to cure.

What are you grinding them with?  Bench grinder, angle grinder, sidewalk, file, all of the above?

Sanding drum on my dremel for roughing out the stone with 60 grit.
Then down to fine machine file for fine shaping.
Finish working my way through various sand paper grits on sticks for detail and on a pane of glass for angles and sharpening.

I use a Diamond cross section pattern similar to a double edged sword point.
Having a problem getting any of them hafted as the women in my family keep obsconding with them for jewelry.

The two I had yesterday are missing...  :-\

 I'll see if I can find some old pictures. Bush' they are sharp enough to hunt with. I left a jade point at Chris Cades place a few years ago when I missed a deer. The slate ulu's will skin an animal. The slate I grind out on concrete block with water, the jade goes on the 60 grit diamond grinder, it is hard.
