my first primitive elk

I just returned from my week long pack into the eagle cap wilderness in eastern oregon. I was able to get a shot at a cow elk. 10 yard shot, through both lungs a little high and caught the artery in the back, she ran about 80 yards and piled up. I used a 65# yew selfbow with a syringa arrow with obsidian head. the arrow in the pic is the point. really excited to get a elk with all primitive tackle.

thanks for all the support. it was really hot the day I shot her, I knew the shot looked a little high and maybe a little back, she ran off and we heard a crash and a couple of hoof beats, but there was another elk with her, we decided to wait a hour to look for the blood trail since we were on the edge of a large canyon, we didnt want to have her run down to the bottom. when we started trailing her within 30 feet she was spraying blood from both sides 3 feet out onto the white granite, she only ran 224 feet before piling up. we worked fast to get her boned out and the meat in the cool shade, we had a 2 mile pack to camp. I did save the sinew but I knew with the heat that the hide wouldnt make it through the week and I didnt bring enough salt to use on it. wish I would have. the point has some impact fractures on the tip and sides but stayed intact after hitting ribs.

      Man, congratulations! 8) :o  Some mighty fine eating there.  Too bad about the hide.  Yeah, it is all fun, till after you get the animal, and then realize you have to pack it out! :P  Great hunting, and at ten yards!!  Man!  You da man!! ;D  8) 8)  Glad you had someone with you.  That is always a plus when you have to pack something out! ;)  Again congratulations!  And all with traditional home built gear to boot! ;) 8)  Was this in Oregon?
