Sierra Nevada style sinew backed juniper.
« on: May 22, 2015, 06:09:18 pm »
I've been asked a few times what my favorite style bow is. There are so many good styles that all shoot different. Imposable to pick one, but this style is at the top of my list. It may not shoot quite as fast as a osage or yew..... longer bow, but has very little stack and a very smooth draw.
The bow is 49" and has a 46# draw at 25". I usually make these bows shorter for 25" draw but want this one to last a long while. I;m sure the bow would shoot a little faster with another " or two of draw, but still shoots a 9.13 gpp arrow over 150fps.(149.5 average). It is made with Utah juniper with 5 layers of elk sinew. The final layer was coated with soaproot glue. String is 3 ply sinew with a otter fur silencer wrap. nocks are sinew hook nocks. Handle is deer rawhide.  In all the bow weighs only 9.5 ounces. 4" unstrung reflex.

Killer bow Chuck. I love sinew backed bows and I may have to try this juniper thing sometime.

Sweet!
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

Another beautiful bow Chuck, one of my favorites as well.  How wide are the limbs?

Thanks. Falcon 1 7/16". Bubby, yes made exactly like a Miwok bow except they have no record of using juniper. However their neighbors the Western Mono Paiute also living in Yosemite area made these same lenticular cross section, hook nock bows of juniper. So I could call this a Western Mono style bow
