I re-applied that steel wool vinegar dye and it doesn't look as good as it did the first time....I may add a little black tea to up my tannin content see if I can get a darker color to match the belly toasting marks.

I'm hoping to have her all dressed up and shipped by the end of the week!!

Sweet looking bow ajooter, whoever receives that ought to love it.
I was thinking the same as DC on that tick you heard, I've had that sting settling tick sound scare the crap out of me on a few occasions.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Well, it's been longer than I like, but I finally got the bow to the dimensions I want to start tillering at.   I also got the tip overlays glued on and roughed out.  I'm using a wood called katalox.  It pretty dense stuff, so I think it'll do fine as an overlay.

Here's how she looks on the tree with the long string on:

And here's how everything is looking after pulling one inch:

The plan is to exercise the limbs with 30 pulls for every inch of draw weight.  If there are any adjustments I need to make in the limb, I won't pull any further.  I'll scrape the stiff spots, exercise another 30 times, and check to make sure everything is bending nicely before pulling to the next inch of draw length.  I'm also lining up the bow so that the pulley is pulling on the string about where I think the middle of the middle finger will be on the string.  I am aiming for equal timing for the limbs.

That's it for now!  Ajooter, that handle is looking mighty fine!

Hi All, those bows are looking lovely!

so I made a stringer out of 5.5mm braided poly rope (supposed to be 100# breaking strain) and it snapped putting the D-bow into a low brace !  no wonder I can't step through it >:D  Anyway, lost a bit of patience and got out the rasp and took off 1mm all along the length.  It's now moving 7 or 8 inches before it reaches target weight on the long string, one limb still a bit stiff though.  No pictures as daughter's I-pad died same day as the stringer snapped (not a great afternoon) and I will have to find the camera and get some batteries.....

Will putting on a short string make it easier or harder to draw the bow?  I don't usually use a long string as I prefer to go straight from floor tiller to short string and this is by far the heaviest bow I have made.

Mud...installing a shorter string will make the bow heavier to draw.  You will be preloading the limbs more then you would with a long string.

Thanks Ajooter,

thought that might be the case but was really hoping someone would tell me the opposite!  Am gonna make a 24 strand continuous loop 18/3 linen stringer - if its good enough for a war-bow short string it should do for a stringer.

Ty I like that profile of that tri lam

Stuck +1 what ajooter said.  Leave it on the long string till you get those limbs balanced out.
