Jandersson - that is one challenging looking stave!  I would also suggest steam - probably going to take several sessions!
I figured the more challenging the more I'll learn. I hear ya, go slow.

Can't believe the turn out fellas this should be a great time!!  I got my lower limb tapered and a piece of zebrawood glued on the handle.  I rounded both limbs tips down in preparation for cutting strings nocks.  I ended up cutting a nock in the lower limb and I quit there.  I'll try and get pics of the progress up soon.

Gutshot - she looks mighty happy.  My daughter and I rifle hunt together too.  I look forward to it each year and they are always a few of the best days of the year - good times.
Enjoy the hunt!  Mitch

That osage has a preformed arrow shelf. It just screams center shot.

Here is my entry, and its backups just in case.

Left to right:  red bud (sapwood & cambium showing), white oak, red bud (down to heartwood), dogwood, and hickory

I am going to try the middle stave first... red bud

I'm not familiar with red bud. It's got a nice color, kinda like well seasoned BL. How does it perform?

I picture it with a nice set of copperhead skins, just enough Sssss to make it work.

Dakota Kid:I like the wrapping Idea, much better than using a clamp which I was thinking about doing. Can I use sawdust instead of powdered antler?
DuBois: I roughed out the bow right after I cut it about two years ago and been sitting in my cold basement ever since.
I'm leaning towards wrapping it and steam/boil it, can't decide...maybe it won't make a difference which I use.
Fred: Here's the belly of that area. The grain in the lever is a bit funny, I think I had to get a big bad check out of there :)

Yes, I love the looks of that red bud.  The color and shape just grabbed my attention.

I needed to cut the tree down, and knew that red bud is related to locust, so it should make a good bow, but was surprised at the color and that the sapwood is so thin.  On a tree roughly 8 or 9 inch diameter, the sapwood is probably only 3/8 inch thick.  It is beautiful wood I think.

I haven't used any red bud yet, other than cutting some small pieces from another log to use for overlay material.  It seems to work nicely.

Next step is getting down to one growth ring.
