Red oak take down/completely primitive
« on: March 14, 2013, 11:32:19 pm »
I found an almost perfect red oak board at Lowe's, 2.5" x 3/4" x 6 feet. Close to quarter sawn, 10 dollars. I decided to make another Alaskan style take down with no backing
and no bolts or metal parts. Before we go any farther the bow is finished and is 68 lbs @31" 2.5" wide/ 72" ntn/ levers are 13 3/4" long red oak with 2 1/2" reflex. I replaced the handle bolts with two 1/4" oak dowels and the nail lever pins with porcupine quills. Almost no string follow! shoots like a dream. This is a high performance take down board bow
that anyone can build. I have a build along link over on Paleoplanet.

This looks familiar?

So here's a red oak primitive, no metal take down board bow that has offset limbs and removable levers and can be taken down to as short as 31 inches and you find the thumb ring interesting? Alright then,  cheers fiddler49

Very cool and unique! So can we also classify this as a 'self bow'?

Tis also an awesome bow. Ive been oogling at it since i saw it on paleoplanet. Just so happened to find it on here. Do you use a thumb ring with the loop?

Corius, Yes I use the thumb ring with the loop on the bow string. This lets me shoot off either side of bow by eliminating string twist from the ring.   cheers fiddler49

Now you know you gotta make some take down arrows to go with that bow now! :) I have been wanting to make me one of these for a while, so I can throw everything in a backpack and go!
"The way of heaven is like the bending of a bow-
the upper part is pressed down,
the lower part is raised up,
the part that has too much is reduced,
the part that has too little is increased."
