Hey Guys,
A few more of us are getting together an Invitational Bow Trade this year. The invites are still out and we are waiting for final responses. We will expand the list as it grows, assuming it does. 8) This will likely be a small group, but it should be a good time none-the-less!
Our Completion Date and Shipping Date will be set for August 1. Our plan is for everyone to post their progress pics in this thread as they go. Some will finish earlier than others, but all should plan to be complete and ship on or around the same time, ( Monday August 1st, 2016). That way all of the "I got Mine!" messages will come in around the same time.
Our 'Admin' for this Trade will be JonW. Those that are participating will need to send him a PM with your preferred specs and direct contact information. These specs are only about your limits as an archer. minimum and maximum draw length, draw weight, and left or right handed. This is not an order form. If you have a specific type of bow you are wanting, ...make it yourself. ;)
Jon will collect these PM's and then make the randomized assignments for who each participant is making a bow for. We should all have our assignments by Monday the 1st of February.
Our objective here is specifically for each bowyer to make a bow that represents his best skills as a bowyer, and perhaps a bit of his interpretation of what sort of bow he would want to give to another bowyer. Sure, everybody is looking forward to getting a bow for themselves out of the trade, ...that's a given. But our focus is on what we are giving to another and just trusting some amalgam of Heaven, Fate and Karma that we will also get something we'll appreciate in return!
I'll post the list of those that have responded affirmatively to the Invite once the list is complete. If you have received an invite, but have not yet responded, please let us know one way of the other for certain by sending a PM to JonW to confirm that you are in or not. On Jan 31 we shall have to assume that any non-responses are No-Thank-you's.

With all these trades going we should definitely see some good stuff being turned out. It'll be a fun time for sure and good to see a rise in activity on here.

I've got a black locust reflex deflex planned and a couple of staves picked out. What would be your alls preference to see. Clean with minimal character and smooth lines or a snaky knotty lumpy thing. Both from the same tree, one stave just caught all the fun.

What I was wondering is are you guys gonna not invite anybody from the other trades? And, when someone is making a bow from two or more trades and one breaks, And it's , sorry guys I've gotta finish the other one first.
That's , what I meant. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy to help out with all of the trades, but somewhere along it is probably going to get complicated, or maybe I'm getting old.

I dont think there will be a problem Eddie. This group trade is just us guys who have met before. Im not worried. Even if that did happen as you say, its not a situation that is not understandable and i would trust all these guys to make good. Shot happens, and we make up for it.

I think it will go just fine. If your inviting a group of friends, how cant it?
Look at the "stats" section at the bottom of the forum home page, for this month. Most on-line in a looooong time. I think its good for the site and good for PA all around. Now if all the representatives of each swap hold up their collective ends this will all go down in PA message board history as the Guinness world record primitive bow swap....hhhmmmm? Is it?

I am extremely limited on wood selection here in AZ. Would anyone be offended if they received a Red Oak bow? Let me hear your opinions so I know whether to sign up or not. Thanks!

Pago, a well made bow of red oak is exactly that, a well made bow. It would take an interesting fellow to not want a well made bow. Feel free to post pics of your bows if you like but im concerned ( and please forgive me if i am wrong ) that you ment to post your question in this thread?

Thanks Hunterbob, I missed that. I tend to scan things too quickly and thought this was an extension of the other trade meant to increase participation. Got it now.

Went out this morning to my wood stash before work and looked thru the piles. We'll prolly get a name to work on here shortly so I have to get the creative juices flowing to start the Imagineering process! I'm kinda feeling like its going to be a laminate bow right now, but haven't really settled on anything just yet.

Gotta love the red streaky osage. I just made a tillering string for the osage I am about ready to tiller. I don't know if this one will be sleek or my other trade bow. May be my other trade bow. Sounds like sleek has plenty of osage. Maybe another wood for sleek.

Im happy with whatever yew make me bob. Yew are such a great craftsman. No mater what wood yew use or bow yew make im sure yew will do a fine job. I will treasure forever any bow made by yew. Dont put yewself out on my account. Im an easy guy to please yew know? No picky, not high maintenance, not flashy... Just a real down to earth guy who appreciates the art yew put into any wood yew own. So, like I say, dont stress what to make me. It will come to yew.

It has taken me a week to pick a stave. I hope it don't take as long to pick a design. I want to try a true static and I'm sure my guy would love it. Just not sure that fits my style. Ahh, I normally have a bow built in my mind before I ever pick a stave. I'm doing things backwards this time hope something cool comes out of it.

Well I'll start with the first pic. Here is the red streak Osage! More like a red ringed Osage with beautiful rings and just a touch of character which I'll probably have to straighten out for the most part. I'm thinking maybe a bendy handle with static recurves? I've never made one so I'll have a plan b and c going probably.

Stave on the left. Chase the biggest ring above the tight group of rings. One good thick back ring and lots on the belly make a pretty bow...

Soooooo i did a bit of work on a red oak board today. Got one limb ready to brace. Gonna do the other one tomorrow. Its got recurved tips with an osage handle.
Actually I have two of those in the works, a sapwood backed osage war bow, a bamboo backed osage, a sinew backed osage, a bamboo bundle bow, one hickory sapling bow, a D bow of osage, a mere heath elm, an osage shoot through the hole in the handle bow, and a few others.
I really have high hopes for the red oak bows though. Got something i wanna try.

Anything in addition to the bow is an option Ed. My guy might find a drum or a set of hand carved camp spoons in with his, but I'd never send anyone my home made arrows! I suck as a fletcher. So far, my arrows are all practice quality only types.

Well, this morning I’ve done some of the normal stuff one does when doing a trade like this. I read lots of posts the guy I’m making a bow for has made on PA. I made some notes about which bows he complemented and seemed to appreciate the most. But after I did a little research, I still wasn’t satisfied that I knew what sort of person this fellow was, so I decided to take it a step further. …and I hacked into his Tinder profile!
So, apparently my trade victim is:
6’7” with a muscular and athletic build. Played both basketball and football at a Division 1 state university. Gave up a promising career as the lead vocalist for a major label rock band to pursue his real passion, which is a rehabilitation ranch for house pets that have suffered traumatic separation anxiety episodes due to being required to live in a small crate all day while their human families were at work or school. He’s currently unemployed but independently wealthy and devotes all of his time to his philanthropic efforts. He served briefly in both the Bush and Obama administrations as a special presidential envoy in charge of negotiating world peace and insuring the rights of the unfortunate globally. He enjoys long walks, quite cuddles, and ‘just hanging’ with someone special that he can make smile. Each morning after swimming 2 miles in the ocean next to his beach condo, he visits the nursing home for disabled veterans or passes out $20 bills to the homeless people downtown. He holds industrial patents on secret manufacturing processes he developed for use in the Aerospace and Defense industry. He is a highly decorated former Secret Service agent credited with preventing terrorists’ efforts to kill the first family and other dignitaries on multiple occasions, though the details of these actions are still classified due to national security concerns. He has a degree in Applied Mathematics and French Literature, with a minor in Eastern Philosophy. He speaks 5 languages fluently and is a top ranked international competitor on the professional croquette circuit. …but really, to his friends, he’s just a regular guy!

I'm going to have to dig out one of my nice staves for this project. Think I'll go for something in the actual historical style and leave the innovative stuff to the younger "bucks".

Hey fellas, been working on a Penobscot for my guy and it's comin along very well.....tweekin here and there waiting on some extra bling to arrive.....did you guys decide to show pics of the finished product or just wait till the fat lady sings?
Just wondering if I should prop up the feet, pull the helmet down (war stories) and break open the single barrel bourbon, not that anybody would want to join in that foolishness >:D 8) 8)

The 100#er is coming along nicely. I have one limb bending and the back cleaned up as well. It has a long bend sideways i will be treating with heat soon.
The red oak molly recurve is almost ready for brace. I also just debarked a piece of what i call candy ( perfect stave no flaws ) with no clear intentions as of yet. I have also begun design of a cross bow. Not sure where that project is going yet....

Ok, I did some looking and thinking and my plan A right now is sassafras but I'll be working on a piece of osage as a plan B. Going for simple flatbow style with a bit of reflex and stiff handle with shelf. On the sassafras, I'm planning to go 2" wide or a little more with a slightly rounded belly to take some load off the back but I still think it will qualify as an american flatbow. I'm gonna chase rings and reduce to rough dimensions tomorrow, and then I'll bring them inside to stabilize for a couple of weeks.

Well, I have shot an 85# ELB at Mojam a couple times but that was a few years back. Lately, the old shoulder has been reminding me of some various accidents from my past. :(
At least I can still drink whiskey... ;)

I'm familiar with both good bourbons and war stories. Oddly enough, both seem to make frequent appearances in one another's company!!!

One bow, Given my past occupation, and my age now.....only thing on me aint broke is bent real bad. Luckily I'm only war story rowdy with hurt ribs from laughin when some of us get together, which aint often anymore.

Knoll....I tried the maple.Made a router/speed drill shaft maker here.Got the lower 40's spine from the maple and 530 grain.Ash is in the lower 50's @ 450 to 475 grain.This is all at 11/32's@30" long.Honey locust and walnut are next.A friend of mine says walnut will suit me fine.I want a 430 to 460 at previous dimensions @ about 50 to 55 spine.I think honey locust will do great too.Could be wrong but will appreciate the great color of honey locust and it's a good use for those god forsaken thorn trees.
Not worried too much here about the bow yet.Got till .Want to think about it some first.

Wow guy's, not sure what to say! I got war stories, good whisky, 100# bows, red oak molly recurves (what a mouth full) broken down hero's, and hidden treasures at John's house! 8) :o 8)
War stories and good whisky is made to be shared with friends around camp fires. I shot a 125# English war bow made of yew several times at mojam a couple of years ago. I made a red oak molly once I still have all of the pieces I found. I have shoulder, elbow, knee hand, neck, and back problems from my younger days. And last but not least, I have some hidden treasures somewhere in the piles of wood around my place. But most are still hiding under a layer of bark.
I think that's it.

I'm finding it difficult to stay focused, I'm jumping from project to protect. My guy probably won't be getting a red streak Osage bow. One is maybe ok but the other is screwed. It delaminated along a growth ring and it took me about a minute to literally rip it apart with my bare hands. Then I seen I had a couple of little creatures eating holes through it. >:( so now I'm spending the rest of the day cleaning up and spraying bug spray. Aaahhhhh >:( >:(

Havin' a bit of trouble with my sassafras too. Did some break tests with some off-cuts, and its seems weak. It may have been damaged while drying. Or maybe all sassafras is like this and it just because I'm not used to it. I don't know. I'm still going to try it, but I'm going to give a lot more attention to the osage, because that's what's most likely to succeed it seems.

I believe all sassafras is terrible bow wood. Unless you want to make a kids bow. I don't like the stuff.

Now that I've got the sinew on my bow for the otherbiw trade, it's time to get started on the one for this trade. I've been wanting to build an ELB for a while and never have yet. So what other time to try a new to you design than during a bow trade. I've for two pieces of wood I'm going to try it with. Noth are very straight with no knots. One black walnut, the other ERC. The cedar with get a maple backing the walnut with be self. The walnut is 76" and the ERC is 68". Any idea how the walnut will work for the design? It'll be 50-55 pound so nothing extreme.

I think the walnut might be weak in compression for an ELB. Never tried though so dont listen to me and try it anyway. Thats what I would do :)

Doing it then!! One more question on it, the stave is near perfectly straight. It 3" wide and 2.5" deep after squaring the edges. I only need 1-1.5" width. I don't have a bandsaw accessible for the next couple days. So will walnut split well enough to risk splitting to get two staves or wait till I can get to the bandsaw. It's hard to use a stave that large to only get 1 bow when there are 2 hiding in there.

I have made some NA's from Black walnut some flat and some narrow...but never an ELB....about the splitting....I never had anything good happen by splitting I would wait for your saw and be SURE. But that's just me

Alrite, I'll wait to do any more with the walnut until I can get to the saw and try to get the ERC ready to take the maple backing. I've made a couple of flat bows from this same walnut tree that turned out decent. I still have to finish one of them though. I have it a couple inches from being shoot able and havnt taken the time to finish it yet.

Found that sassafrass tempers good! Sample size was just 1, but it liked the tempering.

Project is to fashion a bendy handle bow. Recipient's specs are 50ish# @ 26-27". Had in mind to flip tips moderately and deflex handle.
Stave chosen is pc of red elm that's 58" long.
Here's a few pics of the elm stave with front profile outlined in black marker.
It's 58", ttt. 1 1/2" wide @ fades & out to mid-limb, then to 1/2" tip. Handle is 1" wide. No major knots, but numerous pin knots ... often in clusters.

7" from tip on right side is cluster of 3 pin knots. Black marker shows a plan to make limb wider in that area so they're not right on edge. If, instead, I make limb taper a straight line, 2 of the 3 pin knots will disappear leaving just one very close, but not RIGHT, on the edge. Any thoughts on best option here?
Other major headache in my view is limb just beyond the fade. On left side is cluster of 3 pin knots. One near edge and 2 more nearer limb's center line. On right is cluster of 2 pin knots located midway between limb's edge and limb center line.
Given the clustering and location of pin knots in this stave, am not confident re odds of success. I do have available what appears to be relatively clean pc of osage .... though have not yet removed bark.

Kinda bein the poster child for dumb I have made red elm bendies with pin knots before and really never had any trouble. The red elm around here has pin knots that are really hard and dont disturb the grain too much....cant say on yours though. I did mine cause I didn't know any better ::)

Ok guy's! I think one of my red streak Osage staves is back on the table for the bendy handle recurve. But my guy is going to get a big surprise with this one.
Ring chased, and is currently setting at 58.5 inches. I'm going to get it shapes out, straightened and recurved. Then it's going to be set aside for a while.

Went through the stave pile and it would appear that I have been both generous in passing along staves to folks (usually some eager kid..) as well as lax in my collecting some new material to replenish the pile.
I de-barked some narrow ringed osage the other night that has possibilities. I also have some hickory(?), maybe ??? hackberry, to work with.

Ok, think it's advice time before going any further . . . . .
To review .... workin' 59" red elm to be bendy handle with bit of deflex & reflex & flipped tips .... likely NOT recurve. Profiles are done. I've compared limb thickness from one side of limb to another and compared thickness of one limb to same spot on other limb. Adjustment made as needed. Floor tiller seems decent.
One limb is reflexed a bit and other deflexed. Handle and/or limbs need to be moved as string just barely passes through handle.
Planning to add tip overlays at some point.
Not at all sure what sequence of steps should be going forward.
+++ Even out limbs (reflex)
+++ Deflex handle
+++ Low brace
+++ Align tips with handle
+++ Flip tips
+++ Add tip overlays
+++ Final tillering

I've been working on my trade bow today but my camera isn't working so I'll have to get pics up later.
It's hackberry, my osage blanks are a little too wet yet or I would have used them. The hackberry is bone dry. 64" ntn, 2" wide for a third of the limb tapering to the tips. I'm thinking about putting a R/D profile into it or at the least flipping the tips.
That sound good for 45# @ 28?

Figured we need an update on this thread.
I got some time the other day to work on my trade bow. Got a lot accomplished, I got it all cleaned up, and straight as a string. I got an even thickness and started getting the thickness taper lined out. Made a jig for recurveing the tips, done a practice run and tried boiling. It worked ok but I think I will steam bend the tips. Here is a few pictures of the progress.

If I wasnt rehabbing a house I just bought I would be done by now. Unfortunately I have to be moved in by April and i still have 4 floors to rip up down to the joists, one entire exterior wall to completely rebuild and 1940s electrical to replace in the entire house.
My bow building is slowed down right now. Just as well, i got a bow with a nice sap wood ring chased all the way and roughed out with one limb bending. I set it down and the belly checked on me. I guess its not dry yet. So, letting it sit wont hurt. I have at least two other bows i intend to build before this is said and done so i have a choice for my vic.

I have an osage almost to floor tillered for my guy. I actually have 6 bows now almost to floor tiller. Hhb and osage. And I am leaning more towards the osage at this point . But will see.

Elm stave had crooks at one tip and handle/fade area that prevented string from being anywhere near center of handle. String was on the very very edge of handle.
Took 2 localized steaming sessions to get straightened out. But string is now very near middle of handle.

Yeah Mike you could probably get them to match a bit better. Did you heat treat the belly? You might have to put a shim of leather or something under that right limb to get it to bend the way you want it to.

Well I got one bending to 28" and got to shoot it for the first time the other day. I believe my guy is going to love this bow. I know it is smooth and quick. Hardest part is going to be waiting so long to ship it. It's not ready yet. Who knows I could make a few more by shipping date and keep this one for myself:^)

Its all in the handle. You need to make the limbs bend and leave that center 12" totally alone.

Overlay wood bits and scraps are cheap. I never think it much too early to add the overlays. It gives you a better idea of things for the tiller process as well in my ever so very humble opinion. ;D Also, if you plan to put stringer knocks in it, you won't have to cut extra bites into your main limb tips if you already have the overlays applied.

Mike, tiller it just like any other bow you have made. The deflex just gives the limbs a head start in the right direction. Run your straight edge from fade to reflex and scrape accordingly.

Be careful and dont tiller out your reflex. It is starting to come around some there at 14".

Well - I finally got to make a little progress on my Trade Bow this weekend. I'm working with a lovely piece of Hickory (pignut I think) that was given to me by JO5H. One limb had a bit of a dogleg in it and the other had a little reflex. Decided on trying for a bend in the handle done in a traditional Eastern Woodlands style. Shooting for about 40 to 50 pounds draw weight. I heated the bow with steam over the handle to align the limbs easier on the caul, and used the heat gun to reflex the two limbs about evenly before I tiller it out. I put elk horn overlays on the tips and made the diamond type tips out of those.

...and the diamond tips... I've only done these once before and that was with just the wood. I thought I would try making them out of the elk horn over lay bits. Still need to clean them up a bit, but I think they'll look good. They are CERTAINLY hard! ;) 8)

Got my victims offering 99% ready to go....will see if these teaser pics get any comments that I may need to address.....otherwise this is it.
Please give your honest comments, good or bad so I have time time to correct anything that that you guys may look at as a fault or done poorly. I'm greatful to be included and hope to make a bow that any of you would like to have.....so please, lets hear it.
Obviously Osage, Snaky, w/ western diamondback skin, hemp wrapped grip, skinned right over the pin knocks......Want input regarding where or not to leather wrap the grip some over the hemp.

Pretty stick sir! I've often had fits bringing a snakey stave to heel. Especially with Osage, I find it too easy to grab the heat gun and line it all up! ...but I really love the look of one the wanders all up and down the limb.
...and then to apply a beautiful patterned snake skin over the top of such is just classic.

Thank you onebow, That skin and stick was given to me by Don Burchett and both were premium for sure......you got any thoughts on a leather-over in the grip?
I got 2 full draw's because of the character and wanted to show it from both sides.

My thought was to put a fur on piece with the fur sewn inside the handle and sticking out like a collar over and under the grip. ...it's just an idea, but it's what I was thinking. I imagine that would look good next to the snake skin.

I've been using jute and hemp for wrapped handles and find them to work fine as is.
Either way that is one very good looking bow there half eye.

I took your advice....sort of.....here is what I did to the grip area. Cuff's are mink and the grip wrap is twisted whitetail raw-hide in a series of soldier hitchs. I would like everybodys input please.

Mine, is as of right now a do-over. I think I'm going to pull down a a few different staves and see which one speaks to me. And do what I normally do, build a bow out of what the stave wants me to make.
II just finished up a black locust today that I would have normally thrown in the burn pile. It was a fun build and kinda got me wanting to just "free wheel" some bowes until I find a stave to make a specific bow.

Astoundingly, my plan A bow is still holding on!!! I nearly never have such luck, ...but B and C string bow blanks are waiting in the wings 'ready' to step in. I'll likely be OJAMing mine too at least some.

This guy is pushing 100#@28. My scale stops at 80 and it reads 80@25. So I am close. Its sap wood back and unstrung is flat. Sap back with round belly. Lower limb is a touch weak I may pike it an inch to get it stiffer. Not sure if my guy is getting this or a super short bow. Like 50" long as a tree and brush bow.

Me too. May need to keep this one and build another to get more weight and a better tiller. I have the sister stave to this. Its one I traded josh for a Damascus knife and then split the stave in two.

Have done a bit of straightening in handle area. Appears that string alignment is next issue. Straight line tip-to-tip shows edge of handle to be at least inch from string.
Upper limb has mountain of a knot midway. This is also the limb most in need of straightening to align tips and handle.

Given the need to straighten upper limb and presence of that knot on back, whatcha think are best options for orienting limb/clamps to use dry heat and achieve better string alignment?

First off Mike, you better just send me that stave so I can properly dispose of it. That will never work out for a bow. >:D :laugh: >:D :laugh:
Second, if you decide to try it anyways I would work on bending the bottom limb from about 3in down from the center kink to just before the bottom kink. I wouldn't mess with the upper limb limb at all unless I gad issues when it is strung. I've found that the bottom limb on a bow like that like to be straighter.
Is the knot on one ring? Sometimes it's hard to get those knots chased down. I usually resort to using my small pocket knife. If that's a small limb you can do whatever with the protruding part but make sure it's a clean ring up to and around the limb. Just don't put any heat near that knot or any bending pressure sideways. Hope this helps you buddy.

Id steam the center 12". By looking at the pics if you do that you will bring both tips over into alignment. If I have a pretty good lateral bend like yours, I use steam.

Mike, I dont concentrate bend in one spot for those type corrections. I would clamp the left tip to a 2x4 and clamp the handle area, or what ever area is highest pointing in the air. Oriented of course sideways on the board. Then apply heat to the entire belly slowly increasing clamping pressure until you can go further. Let cool the flip the bow end for end and do it again. Sometimes you cant clamp exactly the tip or handle due to know or character but you get the idea.

Well I've changed things up a bit, I thought I would make an Osage bow for my victim. Then I recalled a conversation I had with him and decided to go with a beautiful piece of hickory since my first attempt was a bust. :laugh:
I laid out a pyramid bow and got it to a heavy floor tiller then done some alignment. It still needs a bit more though. I'm going for a pyramid hybrid lebhuntfish style bow. This is probably the only picture you will see of it all straight. The next will probably be a reflexed heat treated mess with recurve tips. It might be a bear to string but it will hopefully be a sweet little bow. It's 60in tip to tip and will hopefully just flex in the hand a bit. If it turns out like my vision then it should be a little speed deamon.

Not so thick on the rings. 3/32 or so. Not often the wiggles match up like that in a stave. After pealing the stave I seen the grain and moved the layout down the stave a bit. Arvin

Arvin - I don't know why anyone would hate on your pistol grips! (?) The one I held in my hand at OJAM felt like it was born to fit my palm. ...and it was danged near perfectly center shot - which I still think is an advantage.

AW trade bow results in . Osage 69" bow. 55@28 . This 500 grain arrow flew 235 yds thru the bow. Time to finish sanding and start with the true oil. Arvin

JonW.....Thanks.Took me a while to refine the transition area a foot from the tip to not look too wide etc.Done by paying attention to thickness there as you go tillering removing material etc.By hand......lol.No belt sanders.....lol.
I'll say again it's a pretty dense piece.We'll see if it shows while tillering to hold reflex etc.Only need to tiller it to 26" so there's a pretty good chance of it this time anyway.

Selfbowman.....I just shot a 556 and 560 grain arrow from my 51#@28" sinewed hickory recurve at 187 and 190 yards or paces I should say.I'm 6'3" though and know I step around a yard every pace when measuring.Not exact yet though but close.

Beadman that's good distance out of a 51 pound bow also. I judge my bows by cast. It is just a little game I play with my bow making. In this game it's always about what you can personally do. Just like golf. I have a cactus that has been measured with a 100 ft tape measure . It's 175 yds from where I shoot. I step off from that point so I am within 2-3 yds one way or the other. To me if 47-52 pound bow will get to or beyond the cactus its a good bow. It blows away the Bowyer Bible expected distances. Thats good enough for me. Is that bow you made mine? ;D I have never had luck with sinue . Tried a couple times with little success. So I stick to trying to improve my self backed osage bows to the point of their limits. Thats cool Arvin, I need to check out my 50lb hunting bow. It flings an arrow pretty fast through the chronograph. I shot it at mojam last year in the clout shoot and was amazed as to how far it shot on the first loos.

OK.....Got the trade bow pretty much done for my victim.It's tillered/sanded/& shot a bit.Holding tiller good.Just needs the finish.I'll get the resting/brace/& full draw pics up tomorrow.Oh still gotta put a little horn insert in for the arrow strike plate yet but that does'nt take long.

Got a back up of a R/D osage bow too to my recipients' draw length and weight.Same length too.It's been shot a bit more though but still a relatively fresh bow.Both character osage bows.I'll take a pic or two of the R/D one too.

I will leave it up to him whether to post other pics.Both bows have close to same amount reflex.Both osage.Both characterish.The plain reflexed one checked a bit on the back from heat treatment which actually to me looks pretty neat.Looks like it's from an old old aged post or something.

Thanks Ed! Your bows are awesome. I'm working on a plan to get my first bow to hold good reflex after its shot in. I've had them take an inch of set and also unbrace profile to stay flat. But not one has had a noticeable reflex at rest.

Oh yea they'll take set alright Pat.If evenly tapered/floor tillered/reflexed a bit more and tillered they should take set evenly and overall if any.I don't get in an all fired hurry doing my bows.I examine them a lot over night while watching TV seeing certain little places that need attention.Not every one is like that but some sure are.

Well I'm certain he'll have fun with it.If not he can send it back....lol.It's ready for finish.Debating whether to put a leather handle on it or not yet.Brain tan of course.....lol.It has a horn arrow strike plate so his release has to be good for a nice quiet clean loose.

Reducing the tips on it was revealing.Weighed it before and afterwards.I took off over 1/4 ounce off the last 10" of each tip.That's over 200 grains total without losing any reflex at all.Shoots pretty darn sweet now.Still a very light thump after release but I think that's accountable for the very small handle it's got.

Usually my handles are a bulbous type like Dean Torges style.Something that feels right.Around 1 and 1/8" at it's widest.

Well fellas this bow for my victim is ready.Shot in and done.Resting with 2" of flex and spits em pretty decent.I gave him the max on his draw weight at his draw length so he should have fun.Now in case he is'nt at Mojam I've got an old carpet roll card board tube to send it in.Is there any other slick way of sending these bows?

pvc is very durable..throw some foam on either end for padding. Cap on one end and a threaded cap on the other.

That is true, I use a drain wast pipe. Still pvc but it weighs half as much and it's thinner. But don't worry Ed, I'll be there on Sunday! Probably be the first one on site again this year.

I use solid leach line pipe like ajooter said $8 gets you ten ft just cut a thin pc of ply and tape on the ends.

Glad you did it. 200 grains, so 100 grains each outer limb? Was it Tim Baker that did some tests and equated 65 grains at the tip equals 1 fps bow cast difference? Or was it more than 1 fps?

I got final-ish tiller done on my trade bow last week at Marshall. Shot the short course with it and it even managed to hit a few targets despite the guy that was drawing it back! :o
Here's a question for y'all... I have this bow about shot in at my draw length, but my guy shoots a bit longer draw length than I do. How do you go about shooting the bow in under such circumstances? I've worked it on my wall mounted tillering tree, but that is not the same thing - as you know...

Yes that's what I've read too,and then the reduction in hand shock if any too.Seems like osage is the only wood to worry about that.

I think shooting it would definitely make a difference...the release of the string puts forces on the bow that just drawing it would never do I would think.

Yes, - stretching on the Tiller Tree is all good and fine, ...and I've done that bit. ...but the release from full draw seems to be an important part of shooting the bow in, as Mr. Jooter alluded to. I have exaggerated my draw length enough to get this bow out to my victim's FD length, ...but it hurts when the string tries to rip off my ear and part of my beard as it flies forward. >:( >:( >:(

You should try drawing to your chest. I've had to do that to get to the 30+" draw on a couple of bows. It's not a perfect feel for the bow. But it's better than nothing. Just gotta make sure you don't take out a nipple then.

I'm planning on being there. It's my goal to have the bow finished by MoJam so if my guy is there I can give it to him in person. It's been pulled to 16" so far, and 12" to go and I plan to do some playing with it tonight after work.

So, it rained yesterday afternoon, but we got a small break in the showers while my brother was over. Quickly, we ran out to the back yard a fired off just a couple shots with my trade bow I am building for @%^*#$|+!. We had very little time so Nathan just nocked an arrow quickly and let it fly across the full length of my practice lane toward the target. (25 - 30 yards) The shot was perfectly silent and all that could be heard was the fletchings swimming through the air followed by a hard authoritative thump into the target. Neither Nathan nor I are even respectable shots normally, ...so this just had to have a picture taken!
Then he tried to persuade me to make another bow for the trade and give him this one. I'm feeling pretty good about this bow... ;D ;D ;D

I just got done shooting in a black licust molle. It can out at about 40#@27". I think I've hit a 40# wall. The last 4 or five I've built have been right about that point. But it does shoot well though and has some good looking black streaks in the handle and a dark ring under the back ring. So it's a little on the light side, but shoots well and will look good. I'll get some pictures of it up tomorrow when I get my buddies help with pics again. I think I'll spend the rest of the evening twisting up some strings.

While I was at Marshall I got a little time to work on my trade bow. I got it to a low brace and has a weak spot about 10 inches from one tip. I think it will be just fine but I got frustrated and decided to try to add a few more inches of reflex. While doing so I managed to remove most of the flipped tips I put in. On the way home Eric and I discussed my bow and here is what we came up with. My first real steam bending.

Got a sap wood backed osage to a good floor tiller and reflex heated in and blood wood tip overlays put on. Let it sit a few days and begin tillering . Has some snake to it also. If I could post pictures I would . I did post some on facebook

I'm not too happy with the weight that the black licust molle came out at, at 35#. It shoots good, but I'd rather hit closer to my guys desired weight. It was a first in a way for me though. It had one good growth ring for the back, and the rest was about 90% crumbly early growth rings. The ring on ye back of te stave in the picture is the one I used. But the new one I've started is another black locust and it'll be a bendy handle. Right now it's pulling 55# at 13" draw. I'm thinking about flipping the tips when I go to heat treat it later. I want to get it pulled to 20-22" at that weight before heat treating and flipping the tips.

Here is my hickory stick with the rawhide on. I decided to heat treat it one more time before I backed it. It's thin goat rawhide with hide glue. It was pulling right at 54@20 before the heat and rawhide.
If it holds half the reflex I would be ecstatic! That is if I can get it braced!

Folks, im making slow progress, but progress none the less. I have one layer of sinew on one of my 45 inch ttt bows and will be putting a second course soon. This one is 64#@26 but after sinew I plan to pull it to 28. It would be nice if it holds! I hope to put in a little reflex to it to add some string tension to increase arrow speed.

sleek, try my smooth sinew method at the top of the page. That will tighten everything up and eliminate your gaps.

PatM's method is definitely worth using. I tried it on my ERC bow. The sinew turned out very smooth with no gaps. Atleast until it dried on the quick side and a few spots pulled away from each other like a drying check. But it's still a smooth back regardless of the gaps that opened. There were no high spots that needed sanding.

I flipped the tips last night and heat treated the black locust bendy handle. I havnt put a string on it yet but have bent it against my leg. It feels like it might have gained a good 15-20 pounds between the two. It was pulling 60# at 17" when I heat treated. I'm only expecting about 10" to hit my weight this time. We'll see in a day or two.

I'll take that into account Ed. But I put rawhide on my hickory. Do you think it would still increase in reflex? I'm looking for about 50 to 55 at 28.

Well fellas my hickory bow is out of the running. I have the upper tip trying to turn sideways on me. I tried some creative scraping and it helped for a few minutes then now I think it is worse. I have an idea on how to fix it but I don't have enough time. So my guy will be getting an Osage bow or possibly a mystery wood bow that Osage outlaw gave me at Marshall. We will see. I got enough staves to choose from so who knows.

I got it pulled back to 25" of the 27" goal pulling 60#. I think in the morning I'll work on cleaning it up, get the overlays made and glued up, then thin te tips a bunch. Right now the tips are about 5/8" wide and my goal is about 5/16". I'm thinking about trapping the back after narrowing the tips. I feel like between sanding it clean, trapping the back, and shooting in, I should end up where I want it. I found a heavy buffalo horn at orcheln earlier and I think I'll use it for the overlays. It'll be my first time playing with horn, though I have worked with antler a little bit. Any tips on working with the horn compared to wood or antler?

Looking good Kyle!
The horn is pretty hard and tuff stuff. It's also not good to breathe the dust from. I found that it can be a little on the flakey side when cutting it and using the knock file.

I went through a few staves tonight. None of them was what I wanted. One didn't have enough meat on it. And ended up with a weird punky spot in it and now it's a kid bow blank. Then I remembered a beautiful stave I acquired at OJAM.
I chased the first ring under the sapwood. I think it will look pretty cool with the white and yellow. Here is a couple of pics.

No, for some reason I thought hi name was Ben. He had a trailer full of staves right next to sidewinder. Really tall slim fella.
It seems a very nice stave, but it had a couple of pin knots positioned in some bad places. So I had to modify my layout a touch.

Well I got a pretty decent floor tiller on my bow today. Made a very minor string alignment, which came out perfect on only one try! I decided to put the overlays on. I probably got a little carried away shaping them since it's not tillered yet. But I got only one shaped out. I'll say it again, Buffalo horn is hard stuff! It's harder than using a a chainsaw file to remove a concrete slab!

Well I got some more work done to my trade bow yesterday I have it braced from floor tiller to about 2 to 3 inches and tillered it out to about 9 inch so far. I love the looks of the sap wood back . That was the first sap wood ring I have ever run on a stave . But I do like the color difference.

Nice overlays Pat. Those should polish up sweet like. I am guilty of finishing tips before tiller and have had to cut a few off that I thought were awesome when I had been too light wt. I just hate doing temp nocks

I quit cutting them off and throwing them away. All my tips are put on with CA glue. So I just heat them up with a heat gun until they pop off. Then I just glue them back on.

When the time draws nearer I would like to have either you or Eric send me a simple paragraph explaining the origin of the wood. That alone will sell a lot of tickets. Veterans are a sappy lot :).......me to.

Nothing gets to me deeper than the National Anthem ( I cry every time), troops in their BDU's, Blackhawks over head and convoys on the highway. I passed a convoy of about 10 trucks yesterday and waived an every single one as they drove by. Bunch of bad azz people responsible for one thing, us.

I work around that exact stuff every day Pearl. I kinda get caught up in the daily grind of my job and don't look at it quite the same. That is until I see them on my days off and they are training for us while I enjoy civilian life.....

Well update on my trade bow. Got it all tillered out and shooting very nice came out a tad over 50 @ 28 . I just put about 25 or 30 shots through it . Now to thin the tips and work on the grip. I think someone will be well pleased with this bow. At least I hope so.

Thanks patrick . I got some work done on the grip tonight also. Now to thin the tips a bit. And after about 50 shots today it is still standing straight and after it relaxes it goes back to a tad of reflex.

Ok guy's, I need a few different set of eyes to take a look at my trade bow. I got a decent amount of work done on it. I think I have the bend pretty close. I need to thin down this fat lady some out towards the tips. But other than that and the handle it's pretty much to final detentions. I'm at 50@25 right now. My plan is to make sure the bend is good and then add a inch or two of reflex. Then continue to about 55@28.
The upper limb has a couple of little wonky spots and it a little bit of "curve" to the upper limb. So I took every picture from both sides.
What do you guys think? Maybe just a touch out of the fade on bottom limb. And some out at the tips is what I'm thinking. Thanks

Frst pic upper looks stiff from past fade to tip but second pic it looks pretty darn good.
Lower seems stiff from shadow knuckle in first pic to tip.

Pat, I'd say I pretty much agree with you on where to take a little wood. It looks like the top is bending a touch more at the fade compared to te bottom limb, and it looks like they could both bend a bit more about where the door casing crosses the upper limb. It looking good.
I've got mine pulled back to 60# at 25". 2 more inches to go. But after getting it there I got the horn overlays glued up and narrowed down to about 3/8", narrowed the back a little, twisted up a string for it with 10 strands D97 and 2 strands B50, and gave it a good sanding with 220 grit. I'm ready to take it out and shoot it in some more and see where it ends up. I'm hoping. Between trapping the back, sanding, and shooting in, that it'llbring it back those extra couple inches. I havnt shot it since it had the fat 3/4" with nocks, I'm excited to see how it shoots now after cleaning it up a bit. See if the little thunk is gone now. Ill try to get a full draw pic today and see if it needs a touch up, I've got some extra poundage if I need to play with the tiller. It should be right about 60# and I'm happy if I can hit 50.

Pearl, are you seeing about a 6in stiff spot in the full draw pic? About where the door frame meets the bow in the pics.
Right about there is a little propeller type dip. I too a tiller gizmo and ran it across there and it marked about a 4 inch spot right where that dip is.
I like my shoes but it's about time to throw them away. :'(
I'll work on it so more in the next couple of days and see what happens.

Right near the middle of the limb, maybe a fuzz towards the fade. Same thing big Jon see's.
Be careful, when Crocs get smooth on the bottom they are like grease! I replace mine about twice a year.

Its so close man, a few scrapes or maybe some firm sanding and you are in there.

I started to shoot ine in today. I started at 25" after taking a quick look in the mirror and touching up the limbs a little. It shot great at 25" and shot it about a dozen times there. Took at to 26" and the same, shot good and hard. Then the first time pulling to 27" we got a pop. After looking it over it looked like a a crock opened up in the back running with the grain in te center of te top limb. And a little angle pulled out of one of the flipped tips. So I filled the crack with super glue before unbracing it. Then tomorrow I'll clean up the glue on the crack, which I figure will hold it fine. Then I'll try to put the bend back into the flipped tip and add a layer of cherry on the belly to stiffen it up so it'll hold better. But before that it shot very well.

Think it's possibly to heat this bend up enough to rebend it a little more without the overlay glue getting too hot and popping off? Only this one had about 10-15* pull out while shooting in. I want to bring it back to match the other. There was enugh curve that the string was just off the belly at brace.

Thanks bud. I knew it was pretty close. But i still question myself sometimes, plus i have tillered out several bows in a very short period. I haven't made a longbow in quite some time. Most of mine have funky curves and character. Plus i don't have the time to make another one so i figured i need to get this one right this time around. The whole process of this bow has seamed to work out really well so far.

I would do just that Kyle. TB3 will let go before scorching the wood. Then a little lite sanding and glue it back on. Just check to make sure that both the bow and the overlay are still flat. I have popped off many overlays like that. But i use CA glue on mine, never done the TB3. But i have on handle blocks and heat will pop them right off.

Tite Bond III takes a little more heat then regular TB. If you are worried just soak the tip in water till the glue is soft.

Pat when you get the top limb lined out shoot it a bunch. I personally think the bottom limb will come around with some shooting.

TB glues will release at 150deg(F). You can wrap a damp rag around the tip then heat the curve and re-bend it...or like someone else said remove the overlay first. Heat will remove that cleanly too.

Got the nock grooves filed in today and shot about 50 down range . Sweet shooter and fast. I may keep this one and hurry up and make another one.LOL. I know I would hunt with it. But I believe my guy is getting my best bow to date.

The overlay popped off great. If it wasn't for the string groove and the hot horn wanting to bend, I could've popped it off with finger pressure. But I had to use a knife and the glue line broke so easy that I managed to cut myself a little when the knife went through. Heating the bend back went great. It took a little more curve than the other one had, so I popped the overlay off it too and bent it to match the same. So in the morning I'll glue the overlay back on followed by gluing the underlay on in the evening. Then the bow should be good to pull back again.

I got one of the cherry underlays bent this morning. I technically bent both, but one I went a little too quick and it buckled in the middle right as I tightened the clamp to hold it. I slowed down a little on the second and it looks good to me. I'll try to get the other bent tonite. It seems like the cherry isn't too big of fan of being bent with dry heat.
Now that the bows got a taste for blood, hopefully it wants more and will be and awesome hunter.

These are kinda small, but they'll keep y'all till I get some better ones in hand. :)
This is a lovely example of Half-eye's bow work! A wiggly Osage character stave, native styled pin nocks, rattler skin backing, black fur collars above and below the handle area, sinew string, ...altogether a beautiful and deadly piece of artwork.
I'll get some better pix of this bow and measure out it's stats as I squeeze a bit more time out of my days between now and MOJAM! >:( So far, I've only had time to fling a few shafts thru it in my back yard. It draws very evenly and has more punch than the draw feels like it should have. I sank my very blunt and dull practice arrows the full length of the shaft almost to the fletchings from 25-30 yards away.

There is a stiff looking area just past midlimb out bottom limb that had a whoopteedoo there that looks kinda stiff but it's working.The outers look a bit stiff too I guess but the set it shows is'nt much.Close to 500 arrows through it.

I got my bow shooting again. And it came out a little over weigt but nothing too serious. I was wanting 55# and it came out at 63# at 27". I had it drawing 55 at 25" before doing the clean up work of trapping the back and all the sanding. Between those and shooting in I was hoping for the weight to settle in at 27". But after I found the hooks were too thin and pulling out. I flipped them back and they held a bit more reflex than before. And the cherry on the belly of the hook made it hold the reflex without bending. Even after a few scrapes from each limb to clean up and even out it managed to gain a bit of weight from the stiffened tips. Oh well, it's a short, light, hard hitting hunter now.
And I'm almost done with the decorating now. I did a little doodling with the ink pen, and was able to get a shed from one of the pythons, Elvyra, on. Though I've gotta redo a couple of the thread wraps that I cut while trimming the skin. Then I gotta put a few more coats of tru oil and a yucca handle wrap and she'll be done.

I think they are a little thicker and tougher than most native skins. This skin was from a still relatively small ball python so they can get much thicker. But they are tough enough that once they are rehydrated you can pull and stretch them a bit to get them to lay down smooth without tearing.

Not much lipstick and makeup but this one doesn't need anything. It is perfect and draws as smooth as babies butt. I'll try to get some pictures posted when I get home!

Just like patrick I recieved a hand delivered snake skin backed osage bow at MoJam. Delivered by Patrick himself. It's a BEAUTIFUL bow, that's smooth drawing, quick, and very quiet. Two things that make it even better. He added 'coon tail string silencers. And I got to help with handle wrap without even knowing it was going to me. Which the wrap is sweet looking and very unique being hackberry bark. I hope I can take some pictures that do the bow justice. As long as the weather holds out I'll get some pictures after work tomorrow and get them up tomorrow night.

Recieved my bow from hunterbob when I arrived back from Mojam late saturday night.Very nice well made beautiful bow.It'll serve me for years.Thank you very much.I'll get pics up[a bunch] of it soon after shooting it some first.It's a sapwood backed osage.Never owned or even shot one before.
Mojam was busy with lots of characters there of course again.Did some trading/shooting/and bulls!@#ing.Right up my alley!!!!Had a blast again.Got a pic of my victim recieving the stick I made for him too.

OK fellas got my bow from hunterbob here and have braced it/pumped it/and looked at it hard......lol.Very nice beautiful stick.Thanks hunterbob.I hav'nt shot it yet.It needs more serving for my self nocks to snap on nice,but will get to it.Pretty busy at the moment here.Storms have tore a few things up here lately and made a mess of things.
It's 65" TTT/62.5"NTN.Sapwood backed osage.54# @ 26".I might need to retiller it to 28" though.It's got plenty of character on it with the wiggles etc.Bloodwood tip overlays.Leather handle and arrow pass.Nice D97 string with some wool fluffys on it.First sapwood backed osage I've ever owned and can see the appeal for it for sure.Beautiful finish.Feels good in the hand.I'm very well pleased with it.Here's some pics.

Glad you like it Ed . I guess it's time to buy a new scale all I have is a round fishing scale that goes to 50# I guess everything over that. So 60@28 is a bit stiff. Will not take much to bring it down a tad to fit you. Hope it makes it out to the woods with you. I do believe I will be making me a sap wood backed osage sometime to. I really like how that one shot.

hunterbob...I'm gonna try to make a sapwood backed one too in the future.I guess pulling the bark and part of the sapwood off then sealing it with shellac.Think that would stop the wood wasps though?They are pretty active here....lol.Taking it in the house would do the job for sure I suppose.

I'd love to Arvin, but if I did I might be paying for a cow. :o I only have about 175 yards to work with. I'll find a way to try it for distance one of these days, but I can't do it at home.

Received quite a surprise shortly after arriving at MoJam! JonW said "Got something for ya .....". Walked to the back of his vehicle, grabbed a bow, and strolled back saying, "Here's your trade bow!"
Osage, 54" ntn. 48 lb @ 25". Timber rattler skins on snaky limbs. Multiple wood layers comprise overlays. A bit of reflexd limbs.
I was at loss for words.

This shorty spits an arrow with authority, dead silent and little/no vibration. No silencers will be needed.

I kinda hated getting rid of that bow.
The stave is from one I got at OJAM from Ashley. It was a pretty nice clean stave. I chased the ring right under the sapwood. It kinda looked cool for a while but by mojam it looked mostly like sapwood. So I decided to put one of my newly acquired timber rattler skins on it.
What Kyle didn't tell you is that I finished up this bow at mojam with him working on the other end of the table.
The handle wrap is hackberry bark. One night Kyle helped me put the handle wrap on. We applied lots of tb3 and wrapped it tightly. He even wrapped it up with his inner tube. He had no idea it was his bow.
II applied 5 coats of spray on valspar topcoat. Then singed it and applied 3 more. JohnW said that the "topcoat" was the same thing as topcoat for cars. It came out really nice. I wasn't fond of the cow horn strike plate. It kinda got pithy on me. Oh, and I had to add some coon tail string silencers for him.
All in all it came out nice and I'm glad to have made it for you Kyle!
The bow is a flat bow style with bison horn overlays. It is 68TTT, 66NTN it weighs in at 54#@28".

WOW. I just recieved my trade bow from Knoll. He nicked this one out of the park. I will get some pictures taken and get a thread started as soon as I can . But thank you Knoll this bow like I told you is a true work of art. I with list all the details in the thread on the bow at that time. But knoll really out did himself with this one. Can't wait for the rain to stop. But I have tomorrow off. So I am sure it will send some arrows down range. Thanks again Knoll.

Well I'm finished with the hackberry trade bow I was working on at MoJam. It may be a little more stout than my recipient is expecting, I didn't have batteries for the scale until after I got the finish on... Oh well, Hackberry tends to lose some poundage after you shoot it in. It's a little over 50 @ 28" and 63" long ntn. The profile came straight from the natural stave so there's a kink in the upper limb, I only corrected it from side to side. It was heat treated a little bit toward the end.
Handle is bloodwood, tips are cocobolo, rabbit fur silencers, and the handle has some wooden beads. Hope the recipient finds it shiny. I'll be shipping as soon as I get my USPS boxes in the mail.

I'm not certain, but I wanted to ask, are we all done here? Did everybody make a bow that was supposed to? Did everybody get a bow that was supposed to? I only read back a few pages, but I didn't see any final word that we'd completed them all or not yet.

There are a few behind, I am one of them. The fellow who drew me messaged me to say id be recieving soon, and i let my guy know as well that I was running a bit behind ( kinda been away for work for 4 months ). I believethere is only one more person other than that and he has been in contact too so I think we will be good :)

Got my shiny new bow from Dave today. Well packed and festooned with the 50th anniversary Star Trek stamps on the box. Very timely and appropriate Dave. ;D
It is prettier in person than the pictures that he posted and shoots fast and smooth for sure. The arrows flew like a leaf on the wind... ;)
Only had time for a few arrows but I hope to bring it along to the Three Trails shoot on Sunday to show it off.

Speaking of bows that shoot well. Jo5h was really hittimg some good shots with his trade bow, and even his misses were quite fantastic. Never would I have thought a bow of that draw weight would power an arrow through a branch that thick. The arrow hit, blew up into at least 10 pieces, and those bits went on very far. We left the arrow shaft embeded in the branch as a memorial. Not that there was any pulling it out!

Got my trade bow a couple weeks ago . Been real busy. Bend in the handle hickory . 50@27 . Shoots a arrow pretty good. I can't get pics to load because of size. >:( >:(. Arvin

I had a great time with this trade. ...and not just the getting a WONDERFUL bow from the likes of HalfEye part, BUT that was/is pretty danged sweet! I really enjoyed fussing over the work on getting my trade bow just so, shooting it in, tuning the tiller, adjusting the nocks, stitching the handle on, and finally giving it to my victim in person at MOJAM.
I had kinda been burned out on the trades before this, ...but this one was different, ...and a good kind of different.
