Can we have the participants give a little insight into what they may like, or want, or need?
I'm good with anything. Materials, art, knives, really whatever.

I love art and I love golf but haven't done that in a while. I'd love a bow but anything is ok with me. I'm not hard to please. I don't think I am anyway. Lol!  28" draw RH anything under 60#.
Title: Re: Christmas Trade Pics.
Post by: Dakota Kid on September 16, 2016, 04:46:21 pm
I will gladly accept and put to use any gift offered.

That being said here's some potentially useful info.
right handed
28-29" draw
preferred draw weight 45-65 lbs
I'm 6'1" tall, 200 lbs, size 12 shoe
I have a hippy wife and 2 daughters ages 9 and 11.
hobbies aside from archery/hunting: fishing(fly, ice and bait casting), mushroom hunting, drawing and painting, music(listening and making), wood working/ carving/ burning , fly tying, good books, good food, good beer

Wish list:
knapping rock
skins/furs
fire piston or steel striker
any raw materials not found near the shores of Lake Erie (I love working with a new material)

Last year I received an awesome deer skin (fur on rawhide)  quiver from Mo_coon-catcher.

I have a few ideas for my recipient, but no concrete plan as of yet. I'll be sending at least one hand crafted item and a grab bag of locally harvested raw materials.
Title: Re: Christmas Trade Pics.
Post by: jeffp51 on September 16, 2016, 11:53:33 pm
I am also happy with anything. I like raw materials as well as nice hand-crafted items. I could use some better pressure flakers/ notching tools for knapping, or a few spalls of rock-or I would never turn down a stave of any type, since I live in something of a bowwood desert. Some of the knives you all make are beautiful too-see? I would be easy to please.

Mostly I am trying to give as good as I get, but so far my research on my victim has not yielded much.  Can't find a Facebook page and he hasn't posted much here either.

I love my golf in videogames, lol. I know that may sound odd at first but hear me out, the fun for me is the planning of the shot, picking your club, putting spin on the ball if needed, and executing and then immediately watching the results. In real life it's just a way to ruin a perfectly good walk, lol.

Post by: TimothyR on September 22, 2016, 09:35:54 pm
I've just had surgery so I can't build anything for several weeks. So I'm thinking of a nice landscape oil on canvas,  Bob Ross style. Or rather wet on wet style. I've never oil painted before but I have done other paintings, like water color, stippling, acrylic. I've done mostly charcoal, and just plain old pencil drawings. But I know I can come up with something nice for my guy.  I plan on painting three and sending my favorite. I hope this will be ok for a Christmas gift.

In case I'm one of the ones in question that has not posted much, and I don't have a Facebook account ( my employer pays for my phone). I have not seen a single thing on this site from anyone that has not impressed or inspired me. From knapping to forging to bow building. It is obvious that most on here are cut from a different cloth, and take great pride in the things we love to build. As for me, I do love wade fishing for smallmouth, spend a lot of time walking fields looking for arrowheads, bow building, squirrel, deer and turkey hunting and watching my daughter play volleyball. Any gift would appreciated.  And GUTSHOT, I didn't draw your name but I do know what those Cumberland largemouth like. I won't forget you like to fish.  Joe

In case someone is waiting on my desires - I really have none.  I really enjoy all the handmade stuff that comes out the members shops here, and I am sure that anything that anyone of us creates will satisfy.  If whoever has me is inclined, I have been in the market for a smoking hawk - hammer on end, hawk the other, with a smoke pipe in the middle.  Not sure about the work involved on that one - might be too much, but then again, I dont know much about forging.  Knives, rock or steel,  always welcome.  So would canned food or mead or honey, if you keep bees.

I have been happy in the past with a fire staring kit, a bird house, and cutting boards.  Whatever you are inclined to make I am sure will be great.

TimothyR hope someone post a real nice picture want to see those happy little trees in your happy little world. Allways watched Bob Ross with my mom she pasted almost 12 years ago. Still remember watching him with her. Loved how he'd have what looked like a finished painting then paint a big old tree trunk almost in the middle of it. Maybe there's a happy little primitive archer after a happy big buck in your happy little world.

Well, thanks to a great community, I did get into the exchange this year due to a glitch in one man's health. Wishing him the best in his recovery, I know he is upset to no longer be in the exchange. Get well soon.

As for what I make for most exchanges, you'll probably get a set of arrows. That's what I make best and that's what I like to make. I always figure we all shoot arrows on this forum. Right? I did make a set once  that I saw put into the Classic auction. They had pink fletching, the girl who got them loved them tho.  :o Pink has become way more popular since then.

As for me, not expecting a bow, but 40-50# at 26" and right handed are my stats, and I don't mind a lighter bow for playing around with or for my family. Anything else is great too. Hand-made is why I always loved this exchange. I like stuff I can use and or use to make other stuff I like to use. I'm not really a bow maker tho.

You all have a gooder, dp

I have some leather and lots of white and other coloured seedbeads, which need to be placed onto the leather. Hope the time will be enough...
I like native american crafts, short bows, shoe size 8,5 (think its german 43), Diddley Bows and native music instruments. But its okay to find something nice crafted under the Christmas tree.

Uwe

I got a plan and a little preliminary work done at least I Think I know what I'm going to make. I just finish a curvy HHB bow for a silent auction for a friend with brain cancer to swampman. Darn that stuff I sure hope they both bring enough $$ to help those there intended too. I'm really happy with how mine turned out. I put a lot into it, it's my best and it's a special bow. Right now I'm sitting behind a pile of stumps with bow in hand

Some other odds to throw in as well. as for wishes haha I'm into anything handmade or raw materials that are hard to get here.  Like sinew, turkey feathers, shoot shafts that don't grow around here (sour wood, cane), snake skins, anything really. Thanks bub. I wouldn't send any junk out, that's for certain. I just wasn't sure if it had to have that new car smell, or not.

I haven't said much about preferences. I like everything. I do a lot of spin fishing, fly fishing, back packing, bow hunting, kayaking, camping, muzzle load hunting, build bows, build arrows, do leather work, playing my drums and I love football and baseball at all levels. About the only thing I don't do is smack rocks together.

Well heck I'm up for about anything too.I stated my draw length and weight on bows.50 to 55#'s @ 28".I'm into anything but cracking rocks yet.Got plenty of stone points though.Even a really nice stone knife thanks to Stringman.Different types of good bowwood to work on that are'nt around here always interest me.
Locally here in the midwest it's osage, hickory, black cherry, black locust, ironwood, hackberry, red elm, honey locust, and black walnut mostly.Lots of seasoned and ready dogwood shafts/some hazel too here locally.Lots and lots of natural turkey feathers. All right hand though.Local woodsmith store can supply me with ipe and most all other exotics.Something that's useful shooting a bow or accoutraments about sums it up but wide open really.
Got plenty of skins/hair on and braintan/snakes too.Plenty of horn.Mostly black.Except those nice multi colored type cow horn tips. They are nice.
My recipient will get something from the supply of goods stated.I'm still thinking something out of brain tan to make at the moment, but that could change at any time since I like to make things I can use it'll be functional for sure.I have not seen anything but a bow requirement from my recipient.

Hmm well like a lot of you have said I'd like pretty much anything, but if I was going to narrow it down a bit I'd say I'd rather something you've made over materials,  I've signed up for the 1st hardcore hog hunt so something to take along to that would be great (this'll be my first hunting trip).

If you sent me 7' of yew with the stipulation that it should become an  English long bow, then I would accept that challenge, sir!

Of course, if you send a shorter yew stave, I would be equally thrilled. I got to make a yew bow this summer, and it was really hard to give away.

I'm making a Plains style quiver for my recipient. I have all the pieces cut out. The hair-on deer hide quiver body has been marked for the stitching but I will hand punch a couple of hundred stitching holes with an awl. The leather trim and shoulder strap can be punched with a stitching chisel. I won't need to punch holes in the felt accent, the needle should push through it easy enough.
I'm liking the quiver that's in my mind. I hope the completed quiver is as cool.  ;)

Frustrating day in the leather shop!  >:(   I got all the pieces for the Plains style quiver cut out, all the stitching holes punched and got the body of the quiver stitched. Each stitching hole in the body was individually hand punched with an awl. With hair on hides you have to stitch the project  inside out then reverse it. Well, I got the stitching done and realized I couldn't reverse it. I've removed the stitches and put the hair-on deer hide away for another project and will(when I'm not so frustrated) make the body of the quiver with other leather. Oh well, in the words of Grandpa Jones...life gets tedious sometimes.  ;)

My research gave that the Natives even used different colourshades (correct words? Sorry ´` m a Kraut!  ;D). Now I`ll have to go to the postoffice and look what they tell me to write down for the customs, item, value of the contents etc. and finally what they charge me. Quite an exhibition of a labor of love.Outstanding!!!!About as much work as beading a baby cradle. Those are astounding too.A great devotion of time.Your recipient should be thrilled. You sure put pressure on the supplies of white beads. All lazy siouw stitched???Maybe cheyenne stitched looping on the previous row.Don't think so though. That usually makes a flatter layout.Lazy siouw is a little more humped.Always liked those geometric designs.Early 1800's period.Did you ever weigh it?
Let's see once too.You got pony trader blues on there and greasy yellows that I see.Not only are your  lines good your choice of conlors is very traditional too.Saw tooth edgeing too.Maybe cobalt blues???The value on that is quite high. From one beader to another great job.

Thank you for the good replies. Yes, its all lazy stitch. I bought the beads at different events, like Powwows in Germany and as well as Hudsons Bay Company in Germany near Munich. I`ve chosen the greasy beads. They are the traditional Lakota preferred beads. When I started, I did the edges first- that should be the finish. But then I took the chellenge, absolutely crazy to bead it. It weighs including the package and a few little flint replicas in small plastic boxes 2,5kg. The replicas are copies of finds in Germay from the early stoneage.
The vest is in the style of the reservation time about 1890, although I don`t like that era! It always makes me sad! But those were the times...
Yes, when I remember it correct there is cobalt blue for the teethed edges. These I`d bought 15 years ago at a spot called Pullman City in the Harz mountains in the eastern part of Germany. I`d never seen beads in that colour again and I`m happy to have bought them. They have a website.
I had to tell at the postoffice about the contents and the value. I had to put 85 Euros for the leather and the beads onto the papers, but marked it as a present not as a tradeitem for sale.
Finally I hope that the trade itemwill find its way safe to West Coast of the US. May the receiver drop a line after he`s got it.
Regards
Uwe

Sweet vest uwe!
I'm making good head way on the arrow set. Self noched, 23/64 poc, full length, burgundy dye job cresting w black sharpie finish. They will have pink barred fletching and sinew wrapped nochs from this years deer. Tapered w/ field points, more trad then primitive, but they are all with in 5 grains from each other and are looking really cool so far. Cheers! dpg

Most Excellent Stingman:
Sorry about the checking.
That log spent more that a year as firewood.... So it was not cared for.

Bradford Pear is far harder and heaver that I would have ever thought.
And... As BJ just stated looks a bit like Cherry when polished up.

Here is the 2016 PA Christmas Trade gift I'm sending to my recipient. This is my version of a Plains style quiver with a bone dagger.  A sourwood arrow with Cherokee 2 fletch, self nock with sinew wrap, trade point(By Osage Outlaw[I think]) with sinew wrap all sealed with pitch varnish.

My kind of knife Jo Jo.
Bjrogg....You got us all wondering there....lol.
Here's a progress report on the possibles bag.Not finished yet but getting there.A few pics from the start of it.It's an 8" by 8" bag that'll have a carrying strap on it and a flattened .54 cal. ball flattened out sewn onto the inside of it's nose for a closure flap.Good old prime Iowa coon hide pouch.Should serve it's purpose.A lot of pics just for a simple bag but here it is.
(http://i920.photobucket.com/albums/ad41/Beadman1/DSCN1435_zps6wbg6haz.jpg) (http://s920.photobucket.com/user/Beadman1/media/DSCN1435_zps6wbg6haz.jpg.html)

and final pic with the strap on.

I see a couple of details changed since I mentioned back on page 6 about this bag.Did'nt line it with more leather because the coons' leather is plenty sound and thick.I used a black I think nylon belt strap for the carrying strap too.Won't stretch when wet and it'll last.

Thanks fellas.
Aaron....Just a cardboard template of 8" by 8" is used to make this along with some hand stitching. Here's the placements of the pattern. Then after it's cut out using a knife from the flesh side[not a scissors as you'll cut the hair] it's sewn together inside out and then inverted.I keep the head and tail intact with each patterned piece while constructing also. This type of layout of the pattern makes the grain of the hair lay downward properly for the best look.Pics.

Scott I knew that box elder would be nice.I've got a camel lid trunk box lined with red cedar for storage out of box elder. The problem is with the red is that in time it can turn to a more brown color.I just linseed oiled that box for a finish though.Still it's pretty nice looking stuff.Even more so if you can find a way to keep the red swirls red.The other two bowls are  very nice though too.

I'm getting closer, got 2 matched spine and weight stone point arrows done want to make a target point one to match yet for practice. I shot them both with my HHB 50lb almost center shot and they  fly like darts. Working on glass knife with leg bone handle from my primitive buck, I think it's gonna look nice. Putting it all in a mink, muskrat quiver like the one I posted on my prototype quiver and accessories. I wanted to tan it but not gonna have time. I have used mine all year and it's holding up fine just don't want to get it wet for very long. Have a few more goodies to put in too. I've got 4 bows going right now too for all my little Indians 3 are shooting now. Lots of flakes, sawdust and wood shavings on santas workshop floor. Gonna have to PM to get my victims address I can't seem to find it.

Getting close to wrapping this gift. Had to try it all out. I can't get it bloody but maybe just a little apple juice won't hurt. Here's some pictures the knife blade is old TV screen, handle leg bone from my buck. I found a bone this summer I'm pretty sure it was from a beef pot roast. I pick it up thinking it might make hilt. I cut it thinner and filed hole so it fit over leg bone. Then I halvted blade with pine pitch glue and let cool. Then I put some pitch where hilt would go warmed it up and slid it in place. Wrapped some leather that Pearl gave me and painted my markings on it to match the arrows.

Cabinetbowguy, the tracking was wrong.  I came home to this package today!  What a great package.  I love all of it.  The knife is beautiful and I can't wait to make some arrows to go with the bodkins.  Also, that little crossbow is a blast to shoot.  I am going to bring it to work so I can have a little target practice to break my day up.  BTW, that little crossbow spits those little bamboo screwers out at a pretty good clip.  I wouldn't want them hitting me.  Thank you CBG

I wanted to let everyone know my progress so far.  I am a little behind where I wanted to be due to many different life situations I won't bore all of you with.  I do have a bamboo quiver completed so far a 3 bamboo arrows to go with it completed.  I do have plans to for a couple other projects.  With the predicted cold weather this weekend, I should get some good progress on my projects as I should be staying home.  Most likely ship date for me will be after the first of the year.

I was having a really crappy day today I had a waterline break in the barn last night then when we went to check heifers this morning one got out last night & tried to jump back over the feed rail her back leg got caught in the rail & she was hanging there by her back leg after we got her loose she couldn't get up so I had to shoot her & haul her to the butcher shop. When I was going past the house with the tractor & spreader I seen a white tube on the porch I had to stop & see what it was. It was from Pearly & what a sweet oceanspray bow with rat snake skin on it came out of the tube can't wait to shoot it. When I seen it that was all it took to cheer me up the rest of the day. Thanks Chris it's a beauty. I'll try to post some pics if I can't get photo bucket to work I'll see if I can email somebody the pics to post for me.

WOW! WOW! WOW!!!!!
I took a walk to the post office today and there was a package almost as tall as me  waiting for me.
I live only 5 houses from the P.O. but the walk back seemed to take 20 minutes, I could not get home fast enough.

When I opened the box I found a really cool little box call that was the perfect gift for me because I collect turkey calls, it will make a nice addition to my collection.
There was a tanned deer hide that I will put to good use some day, perhaps a possibles bag.
There were a dozen expertly crafted cedar arrows fletched with turkey feathers, A WHOLE DOZEN!!!
Also...Yes there was MORE!
Wrapped in news paper and lot's of tape what was obviously a bow!
I took my time unwrapping it... When it came into the light of day, it was if I could hear the angels singing!
What an awesome!, awesome! bow!!!
HHB, 65" tip to tip, perfect 1/4" positive tiller, red leather grip, Tip over lays that look to be paduak, zebra wood and ebony!
even the string is of superior quality, I teach string making to kids at our archery camp every summer and I can't make a string this good! I don't know the poundage but I bet it will hammer the target! I can't wait to shoot it!
We have a group that shoots through the winter at Hawkeye, we start New Year's morning every year, I can't wait for 2017!!!
WOW!
Did I say WOW!?
THANK YOU HUNTERBOB!!!!!
What an awesome gift!!!!
I have been having trouble posting pics, but I think I can figure out how to resize them, if I can, I'll post pics soon.
WOW!
THANK YOU HUNTERBOB!!!!!

Kevin

You are more than welcome Kevin.  It was my pleasure to send you some gifts. I really enjoy these christmas trades . And that was my first time ever trying my handd at turkey call making. I thought it sounded pretty good. But you being a collector would know way more than me.  I hope the bow fits you well. I don't have a good scale so I just wing it. That is HHB I harvest right here in Ohio . And the stain is a blackberry base with a few different stains over it . And I believe you nailed the tip overlay woods . I really liked the way the blood wood tipped the ends. And thank you for the string compliment.  That is D97 . Merry Christmas Kevin and all on PA .

Wow! Some really impressive generosity happening around here and before the big day even. I may have to add a few more things to the gift bag/box.

I doubt I'll get mine out before January. I have soooo many gifts I'm currently working on, for my family and friends as well as the trade. I still have no idea which ones will end up where, but I'll mention a few of the impressive ones. The list includes, hand made wooden fly boxes(filled with flies of course), an elk jaw tomahawk,  N.A. flutes of cedar and poplar, a half dozen arrows, buckskin knee high mocs, a few wood burnings  and a fair amount of local raw materials.

Happy Holidays fellas.

Bowtarist im not for sure if that was a bow kill deer or not. I just got one from the freezer and tanned it out for the quiver. Glad you like it and hope it serves you well. Can't wait to see the arrows finished out too. I will shoot you a PM on how I tan my hides. It does take a lot of elbow grease to get them soft though.

I got a package in the mail today from Kevin Raybould(Buffalogobbler), a very nice box turkey call, a very cool hand carved wood spoon and 2 string keepers for my bows. Thanks so much Kevin. Very cool stuff that I will enjoy.  I'll get some pics up soon.

Lucky you, Pat. I have one of Kevin's agate pot calls and turkeys like 'em alot. Mine has the softest, sweetest sound you ever heard. I switch to it when they break that 60-70 yard mark.

I got a package in the mail today from bjrogg. It included a mink quiver, a knapped glass knife, and 3 red osier arrows. Oh, and some homemade jerky. Two of the arrows have some beautiful knapped obsidian heads.  They look fantastic, and I'm going to do my best to put one of these arrows into a hog. Thanks, Brian. The whole package is truly a great gift.

I'll take some good pictures tomorrow.

I've got some finishing touches to do on my gift. I decided to make some improvements over my initial design, and I decided to add a couple of more useful items.

I so glad you got them and I sure hope the arrows shoot good for you. You should be able to match the practice tip to a bow and the stone tips should shoot close to the same as I can make them. It would be so cool if you harvested a hog with one of your stone point arrows.

Glad you liked it all Ed! Sorry to send you a bag when that's what you sent out, but if already started it when I saw your pics 😀 The pens rose wood with a wax finish, and the bags molded goat leather. The bag actually broke the mold literally which is why it's a bit more creased in the corners than it should be.
Title: Re: Christmas Trade Pics.
Post by: BowEd on January 01, 2017, 09:42:14 pm
Trevor....So you sewed this bag onto a mold of sort?Cool.I've never done that before.Do you dampen it before or something and let it dry so it holds the shape better? It feels like good tough leather.
Title: Re: Christmas Trade Pics.
Post by: TrevorM on January 02, 2017, 01:21:43 am
Yes exactly. The front was dampened, stretched over the mold clamped and let dry. It's veg tan goat leather, it was the first time I'd worked with it. I'll definitely use it again. Here's a couple of pics I took in the process.

I know what you mean BJ this Jan. 31st will be 3 years since we sold the milk cows they went your way since then we been getting all the newborn calves from another farmer & raising replacement heifers for him & raise the steers for beef. I thought after the cows left I would have more time man was I wrong I think I've got more work now then when we milked. Did head count the other day with steers heifers & newborns there's about 700 animals here.

Your bead work is great, I've strung a few, and have some Native American friends who do beads.  You do good work!  TimothyR, keep painting -I would like to have one of your works;  all the bows, arrows, and leather works are superb.  I am renewing my skills but will try to get into the next go'round, I do some nice redwood boxes, I think.  Congratulations to all, and Happy New Year!

Made it home from work and found a pleasant lookin little box layin on the porch. Of course my wife chose to keep her little secret instead of calling me at work and informing me early. Thank you Russ for the very nice set of arrows and bow quiver. I can't wait to put them through a bow and watch em fly. I will freely admit how I don't like making arrows so this gift is spot on and I appreciate the thoughtfulness it demonstrates. Merry Christmas!

Looks good swamp thang! Barefoot huh? It's 18 degrees here today.

18 below here lately!  I don't even dress like that IN THE HOUSE these days!  Starting to really think this move to Arizona isn't such a bad idea.

Can you post a little more about the take down aspect of the Atlatl dart?  I'm interested.

As requested.....it is still green as I harvested  it and began the process.

The main component is rivercane with pin oak inserts which I whittled and sanded down to form the tightest friction fit possible, on the middle I poured a healthy amount of wood glue in one end and using gravity with a lil thrust slammed the rivercane six inches onto the pin oak dowel let sit. The tip is glass from a Jagger bottle with pine pitch and wrappings are done using a serving style wrap from my back up bow string : ( the fletchings were harvested from my aunts turkeys. Total length is and 6'5". Everything organic I harvested myself.

More pics to come when service is better.

I've been immobilized with an upper respiratory infection since new years. It finally broke today and I got back to work, so I'm a bit behind where I'd like to be with my gift. A couple more nights at the fly tying bench and I'll have it ready to go. The fly box turned out pretty sweet though. If I would have made it a bit smaller I could probably could fill it faster though. Oh well, those extra flies will come in handy if my guy casts any thing like I do.

I will include instructions for fishing the flies from a spinning rod too, just in case my guy lacks the proper equipment. They should be more or less equally effective regardless of set up. I have a few other odds and ends ready to go as well.

Dakota Kid that sounds like a great present, I'm sure whoever gets it will be very happy with it. That upper respiratory infection has been going around here too. My oldest son (33)has been fighting it since before thanksgiving. He's been to the ER 3 times and they've had him on 4 different antibiotics. He is still fighting it and still had pneumonia yet this week. He is so sick of being sick. I sure hope yours goes away better than his has. I'm sure there's ice on the bay now, one of my cousins was out last weekend limited out on 14" perch. I told him you wanted to get some walleye he said they are usually further out by the gap and ice was to thin for him to go out there but some people where getting close to there. It's been cold and windy ever since.

WOW. It was like Christmas morning when I got home from work tonight.  You went over the top with these gifts swampman.  I really appreciate everything you sent and will put it all to good use.
Ok everyone here is the list of goodies that Mike sent me
A bamboo quiver with the top lined with fur and a I believe jute shoulder strap that is hand braided with deer antler . It is sweet.
Six boo arrows with self nocks 3 with field points not sure
what they are made of and 3 with trade points razor sharp broadheads
A pile of turkey feathersa longbow sleeve.
And to top it all of everything came in a hard plastic arrow case.
Thanks again swampman for a fine list of stuff. I really did feel like a kid opening up everything.
I will see if I can sweet talk someone into posting a piture for me.
Thanks again Mike .

Hunterbob, I am glad everything made it.  The field points are made out of nails with the heads ground off.  The trade points are made from a band saw blade so the are a high carbon steel.  I got the bandsaw blades from a PA member in a trade years ago.  I hope the arrows fly well for you.

Happy holidays.

Got mine today and a big thank you to Looper for the wonderful stuff. There was a poplar bark quiver with goat leather strap and lining, a hand forged steak flipper and an antler tine powder measure from a deer that he has killed with a primitive bow. (Ought to be some good Mojo there..  :))
Oh, and it was all packed into a wooden box marked " FRAGILE' " so I thought it was from Italy.  ;)
When my tech support gets home from school I'll post the pictures that I took
Thanks again Looper.

I'm glad you like it, Paul. Take a picture of the box, too. I figure it would make a great arrow shaft holder.

It looks like I forgot to put on the final strap. That one was just a temporary one for getting the length right, and in the rush to get it all mailed, I overlooked that. It's probably still on my desk in my shop. I'll drop it in the mail to you.

Hopefully that powder measure is a useful size for you.

Balsatech, I'm glad you were pleased with your gift. I was right though you certainly do make a better lure than I do. Those look fantastic. Do you airbrush yours? I was toying with the idea of sending you one of my older pasche airbrushes I no longer use, but was worried you already had your own.

That offer to take you out smallie fishing on lake erie is good for as long as I still live up here. I don't own a boat, but in the spring you don't really need one as long as you have a good pair of waders. We have quite a bit of out of towners crowding the bay during that time of year. I hear we have some of the best bass fishing around. I take it for granted having grown up here I guess.  If you've never caught a big pig small mouth on a fly rod, I highly recommend it.

Wow!  that was worth the wait.  My wife said it was a long package, but it was a loooonngg package. The address said Pender Island, BC,  so I am assuming the gift is from Penderbender. When I opened it I found over 6 feet of yew waiting for me. Beautiful straight, nearly knotless yew.  That would have been more than enough by any standard, but in the package was also two nice pieces of horn for knocks, and a wide variety of shoots for arrows --including over a dozen ocean spray, some dogwood, wild rose, pacific ninebark, and some serviceberry.  I have never mentioned how I like experimenting with different arrow materials, but I really enjoy making arrows, so this gives me some new types to play with.

But I guess that wasn't enough.  There is also a 55" stave of either ocean spray or ironwood or vine maple (I am not familiar with any of these, so I am just guessing) and a block of red colored wood for tips or handle work.

This is a kingly gift and I feel like I have won the lottery.  Thank you so much.  When Brendan mentioned earlier what he planned to send out, I secretly (and not so secretly, maybe) hoped it would come my way.  I got to work on a piece of yew this summer that passed through my hands on the bow trade, and I have been wanting to work another piece of yew ever since.  This will ease the pain of letting that piece go.  Now I have to research ELB designs or something Pacific Northwest-y  style like Wizardgoat's designs.  Whatever I end up with, I need to make the most of the length.

Thanks again. This was well worth the wait.

Yep it's ocean spray! I'm glad you like it all. There is a card explaining some stuff in zip lock bag under the purple tape. Some of the shoots aren't the best but I figured you could use some for foreshafts. I'm just glad it got there ok. Haha I was a bit worried as wizardgoat advised taking the bark off, but I didn't. Didn't wanna risk ruining the backs. I usually just let it pop off, when it wants to. Cheers- Brendan

Jeff, that is a very nice  unch of materials you have there.  I am sure you will make a beautiful bow out of that yew, although I am not sure how you will top the one you made in the bow trade last year.

I received my box from YosemiteBen.
He made me an awesome POC handmade flute that my wife won't stop playing haha.
I have a pretty good sized musical instrument collection so this is a welcome addition.
He also threw in some cool Yosemite park badges for the kiddo, and some mock orange shoot shafts. I've been wanting to use this material for quite some time, so thank you Ben!
I'll try and post a pic soon
