Looks like some Fenton slag. That stuff does make some very cool points.

Hi Cowboy,
If you are calling the point I posted Fenton slag you may be correct.
I actually don't know what it is called. I got it in Franklin NC. (Gem Town)
The guy said it was art glass from West Virginia. Yes it is very pleasing to look at
and knap. Last time I went buy to buy some they wanted over $4 a pound.
To heavy for me.

Nice, an appropiate for the season 8). $4 per pound , I believe you can get obsidian for 1/2 of that. Bob

Hey that ones looking good! Yes I was referring to Fenton slag glass. I bought some in Branson one time and looked very similar to what you have there.

Those look good Zuma! I always have trouble with dacite.

I found this piece that had a little color to it.

Thanks Scott,
Yours is quite awesome. I hope to see more Dasite finished like that!
You didn't loose a smidge on length.
I had no idea it had a color range. Live and learn.
Hat off to all the other contributions here as well.

That was misleading. I meant to say that was a piece of Burlington (not dacite.)

Well great Scott! Lol.  That's amazing you took that lil ole square rock and got that big ole point out of it. I need to focus more on efficiency. Great point!

That is most definitely Fenton slag glass. There was a scrap yard in West Virginia right near the Fenton Factory that bought all of the slag from the plant and resold it as art glass. Place was called Gabbert Cullet. It is my understanding that the plant is now closed and will no longer be producing Fenton Glass.   I have been there several times and it was like being a kid in a candy store.

http://www.gabbertcullet.com/backlot.html

I don't know what they still have available and I would be leery of buying it over thru the mail.  The annealing on a lot of the glass was questionable and I used to try to take small flakes off some of it before putting it in the bucket. Some was under incredible tension from not being annealed properly and would literally explode in you hand when struck. It was sold all across the country to Gem stores and arts and craft places. May soon be harder to get.  I am not even sure they will sell it  in small lots.

I hope it's ok to continue a bit along the Fenton glass path. Although it could make a thread of it's own.
Steve, your info is the best I have heard off.
I think I was to that plant but it was closed. Happenstance while driving through WV.
If the plant is in a gorge sorta setting with a river nearby. Lol could be anywhere WV.
Any way I wish I had bought more when I found it in Franklin years ago.
Look on ebay they want like $10 @lb. (not sure any is fenton)
I will include some pice of the stress Steve made us aware of and a few other
points. Well atleast they are very Christmasy

Thats the stuff, if you have a kiln and can read up on annealing a bit it is not hard to fuse it and make  new glass it helps get rid of the stress. Do not mix colors tho. I always called the brown jaspery looking stuff   Glasper.
