Mesquite character d-bow

 This is a honey mesquite sapling that I picked up in San Angelo, TX.  It is only 1 1/4 " thick at the handle and to get the tips to line up, I had to make it 69" ntn.  It ended up drawing 40# @ 28".  It's not real fast, 140 fps with 450 gr arrows, but a real pleasure to shoot.  I made the handle wrap out of a scrap of coyote pelt that was left over from making my daughters quiver.  I left the fur on and to the inside, thinking it would cushion any hand shock it might have.  A needless precaution as it turned out, but it does fill my hand better with the added thickness.  I left a little bit of inner bark on for a strike plate.  It got 3 coats of tru-oil rather haphazardly applied due to the fact that I never thought it would last.  It has two rather ominous knots that I considered fatal flaws.  I never expected it to survive tillering let alone still be shooting today.  It has become my favorite stump shooting bow when I'm home.  I tillered it using the shadow method described in the TBB.  Thanks for looking.

Nice, I like that a lot.  I just brought a mesquite log home to try a bow out of, but my attempt at splitting it in half was a miserable failure and cost me a stave.  Thought I'd wait until the weekend and give it another go.  Anyway, beautiful bow.

Thanks alot fellas,  any praise from the likes of you all, is high praise indeed!  George, keep an eye on that mesquite, as you probably know, it will check and split faster than Osage.  Can't wait to see what you craft from such an ornery growing tree.  Although, I have seen some of the osage staves you have tamed, mesquite should be no bigger challenge for you.

Bring your walking shoes too.  I must've looked at 50 trees before cutting the crooked one I took.  Sadly, I drove by that one on the way out, thinking there'd be a better one.
