Title: Ice Fishing '13
Post by: Stoker on December 18, 2013, 05:22:04 pm
Well it's that time of the year again... Hunting is over the lakes have 20'' of ice... Young Dan (SkinnyD) started us off with a 27" pike.. The young buck caught 2 but only took one pic... Steve that old tip up is working great.. Lotsa line been run out I just gotta be quicker :-[ ...
NOTE - Ifin any of you catch something through the ice... Feel free to hijack at will... Cold water catches ok too... Or if your holding a cold beer.....
Thanks Leroy

This is a laker I caught several years ago. We caught 11 lakers that particular day. All of them where 18-34" long. We use regular medium action 6' 6" rods and spinning reels with 10# mono. I made rod holders from OSB. Live smelt is the bait of choice. We get there at 2-3 am and catch a cooler of smelt. Then jump on quads and run out a few miles to catch the lakers all morning.....if things go right. Michigan is a wonderful place for outdoorsman!

That looks great.  We don't have ice fishing here in arKansas, so there isn't much to catch until March or April anyway.  Always thought it would be neat.

My Buddy in Montana fishes the ice quite a bit, and is in Havre, Mt. at the moment, and is doing well on the ice there also, caught some nice sized walleyes, and some pike.  He caught a nice 40 inch one in Thompson Falls, and when I went ice fishing with him, we only caught about four medium pike, but the day before, some guy caught a 48, or fifty some inch pike!  I can't remember the exact length, but it was the talk of the town! I managed to miss a couple, and then when one of the tip ups went up, I stood up from my chair, and I was no longer standing, but landed on my side hard, and jammed my hip somehow.  I was ok, till the next day, and it still gives me some problems, not as bad as it was, but I still can't fully cross my leg, and relax it.  But I am doing it a bit more and more, I have been doing some exercises the Chiropractor told me to do, and it is helping quite a bit.  Up to that slip, I was enjoying ice fishing.  Didn't have my Yak Trax then, but I do now, and then I found out after buying them, I could have just used a pair of panty hose wrapped around my feet, or some hemp rope wrapped around my feet, and they work as well or better than the Yak Trax, and MUCH cheaper!  The fall, which gave me no time catch my self, or try to correct the fall, I was just on the ice!  I stood up, and BAM, I was on the ice.  Ice do be a tad bit hard!  But that was last year, and I wish I could be there this year.  It wasn't till after, I was out there, and fishing that I realized why my Buddy never said how thick the ice was.  It was only about 3-4 inches thick!  He said it was plenty thick.  Uh..... uh huh.  Well I was next to the little boat like sled that was used to carry the tip ups, and chairs, and the bait.  Just in case I suddenly stood up and suddenly went through the ice.  It probably wouldn't do any good anyway, because if i went through the ice into that COLD water, I'd be done for!  Not so much form being weighted down with heavy clothes, and drowning, but from choking to death from two lumps in my throat! ::)  But I did enjoy it, and wish I was out there now.  But next year!  Look out fish!  Some mighty fine eating there guys.

my bad.

Too late now buddy! It was on Higgins, off the north west corner of the island in about 90 feet, just on the edge of that 120 foot hole. It doesn't seem to matter where you fish as long as your in 80 feet plus and they are feeding.

PD
that's a popular spot.
some fellas I work with fish the same area.

we fish steelhead thru the ice with the same set up .
but with spawn.
a coal boat came into 1 lake and a dredging barge into another and put the screws to the ice on both for a while.
so no slammer fishing for chrome this weekend.

love hard water fishing, and so do my boys.... Last year, my son and I hit a great day for the pan fish, and he caught enough (by himself) to feed the family and put some in the freezer.  The kid was SO proud he provided the fish for dinner, and probably ate his weight in fillets too, ha!

ICEFISHING 101 - As promised to our southern freinds
1. Find frozen lake
2. Drill holes Note- power auger good
3. Setup shelter - Use cordless drill for lags... Those t-handle lags suck
4. Light up heater

Hopefully this will work.  I hope it does.  My Buddy's three sons with their catch.  They had caught five others, close to the same size and threw them back, and would have thrown two of these back, but all three had swallowed the hook too far down.  As you can see there is no need of a cooler for the PBR. ;)  You can't see it well, but there is a nice COLD Pabst Blue Ribbon, behind them, it is between the two on the right. 8)

Stoker, my Buddy and his Wife are in Havre now building an assisted living facility.  This was at Martin Creek Slough, in Noxon Reservoir, in Trout Creek, Mt.  He has done some fishing on the reservoir in Havre, and loves it!  Caught some nice walleye, and pike there.  I wish I was there now.  Not Havre, but in Thompson Falls!  Havre is too cold!

Yeah, KH, my luck ice fishing was rather lackluster also.  I tried it for the first time last year, only had one fish on, and nothing to write home about, and lost it just as I was pulling it out of the ice.  That was after taking a rather FAST fall on the ice after I stood up from my chair.  Later a guy at one of the restaurants in town, told me he just uses a towel, and when he gets the fish's head up through the hole, he flops the towel in the fish's mouth, and it closes down, like an alligator will do, and he just pulls them out, without a gaff.  Sounds plausible.  I would sure like to catch some like those, though for sure.  I would be very happy! ;) ;D

I think I will just try the towel J.W..  I am experienced with blue fish already. :'( :P   yah, hey dere Pearl Drums, ya fer sure you betcha dem is some good ones hey?  I wish I could catch some like that.  Heck just one.  But they caught five others, and let them go cause they didn't think they could eat that much.  They only kept those, as the they swallowed the hook too far down.  Uh.....hello..... freezers, Friends, etc.   But they were all going out of state in a couple of days.  So they did not want to leave them in the freezer .  The Three are fantastic people, as is their whole family.  The one on the left, and the one on the right, both got scholarships for pole vaulting, and the one on the left was offered a scholarship, after graduating, to get his masters in sports, and  to get room and board, plus be paid, to coach pole vaulting.  He is now working for a Friend he met while working doing surveying for the oil fields, and is partners with him in his business.   But he has almost paid off all of his student loans, and is bringing in around $80,000.00 a year.  Not bad for a 23 yr. old.  The one on the right, Broke both his ankles, while pole vaulting for the school, and while studying to be a Physical therapists, and his grades were so good, the Professor, asked him to wait after class.  He sat down with him, and told hmi he was wasting his time, in that class.  He needed to go to Medical School!  So he is now in Arizona studying to be a podiatrist.  His Wife by the way, was also a champion pole vaulter.  Unfortunately, she landed wrong, and broke both of her ankles also!  She didn't go up right and came down on the front side of the bar, and hit the asphalt.  Anyway, she is now studying to be a nurse.  The oldest one, the one in the middle, he is very good at painting, construction, and just about anything he tries his hand at. He helped his Dad build my home in Montana.   His wife is a Brain surgeon!   Right now they are living outside of Pittsburgh,Pa. till she is done with her residency, then they will decide where they will go to live. Their Dad told me he is pretty much covered now.  If he stubs his foot, and falls and hits his head, he can get his foot fixed, and his head worked on and have a nurse to take care of him! ;) ;D Each of the kids that went to College, paid their own way.  Not that their parents wouldn't have tried to help them, they wanted to do it on their own.  And they did. ;) good hunters, and fishermen, and all round Good People.  I have known them since they were just little kids.

Well I finally went out today after a 2 year hiatus from ice fishing. We took a snowmobile out and went through spots that there was close to a foot of water on the ice. You could feel the snowmobile rolling on the water. I have never seen conditions like that. The fishing wasn't that good but it was nice to get out.

You could feel the snowmobile rolling on the water. I have never seen conditions like that. The fishing wasn't that good but it was nice to get out.
Close to a foot of water on the ice? :o  I think I would wait till next year. ;)  Especially with a snowmobile! :P ;D

the rain Friday evening into Saturday morning really slopped up the ice .
im taking a break till cooler temps later in the week.
also fished Friday evening in the rain and the bite was off.
im gonna check the river this morning   and hopefully fish some steelhead,

Finally got everything charged and ready to get out. My son and I managed to catch a small mess of bluegills and channel cats through the ice today. It was 45*F and sunny at times.

We used to skip school and drive the cars down on the ice. It helped me drive a motor boat later on. I would spike the tires of my dirt bike and run my trap line around the lake before getting on the school bus.
I got lots of these in a local river. Cold water Barracuda. Fish on the ice till blue.
Tip up, jig, uncle Jack and Mr. Yukon Jack. Hot sausage.

Yeah Steve they cancelled school yesterday for that and we only hit -4* F and same windchill. Sounds like it shifted more to the east and not so much south. Made for a good day to hard water fish ;D

irons and Manistee are only about an hour north of  me
finally had some time to get out and fish some more
I had heard the bite was tough so I was out on my favorite crappie hole set up and fishing over an hour before daylight.
got into the fish right away.
but soon after daylight they turned off and wouldn't touch anything.
