Simon. I'm am so glad someone brought this back to the front page as I missed it the first time around. I don't know what to say other than I am stunned. How you came up this idea is beyond me but Bravo my friend Bravo. The ERC is stunning isn't it. You have just set the bar waaaaay up there. Thanks for contributing. We all benefit greatly from seeing this type of work.  Danny

As for the species: eastern red cedar, aka ERC, is Juniperus virginiana. Pretty common as an ornamental conifer in Europe (there are two in my parent's garden). 
A rather common species in N-Europe and Canada is Juniper communis, the common juniper, whose berries are still used to flavor gin. This species doesn't have red heartwood, so it seems you do have ERC.
All true Junipers (Juniperus species) seem to be excellent in compression and make good (backed) bows. Maybe your next Juniper could be a native one.

Oh, and I've worked already with Juniperus, also currently one on the bench (selfbow).

Yeah those are some funky bows you made with juniper, pushing the boundaries of what we (or at least I) thought was possible.
I'm in Belgium just 50 km east from Brussels.

I went back to this thread after reading the current thread on splicing levers.  My jaw dropped again.  Has to be the most beautiful, awe inspiring bow I've ever seen.
It's like hearing Mozart (or Jimi Hendrix) for the first time. :)
