Title: TN classic
Post by: StevenT on December 08, 2009, 12:36:24 pm
Pappy,
I'm trying to get my vacations planned for next year. I see you held it in May this year. Don't know if it is always in May or not.  Just curious if it will be in May next year?
Thanks
Steven

Thanks Pappy. As you know, I just got involved with PA this summer. I made it to the NC Knappin and enjoyed the heck out of it. Since the TN Classic seems to be the granddaddy event, I am going to try to make it. I know you will be sending more info out, but what city are you close to so I can see how long it will take me to drive.

Is this an invite only thing, if not, that's around my birthday and my wife might give me the gift of letting me come over to play? I'd like to meet some of the people that have helped me out on here in person and this sounds more personnel than some of the bigger crazier events. I'm sure you guys are still pretty crazy though from some of joking on the other threads.  >:D

Eddie I almost forgot how pretty that piece of yew was that you sent me and I am planning on finally getting around to it.

Pappy, When would be the best time to come up for your season? I think Tim and I will ride together from Atlanta, hunt, then I'll come back up for the Classic unless the dates are close together.
Title: Re: TN classic
Post by: Pappy on December 10, 2009, 10:07:29 am
The season starts around the end of March and runs through the middle of May,not sure on the date yet. I like the first part of April the best.Still not to hot and the ticks aren't as bad.The birds
seem to work better then also, they haven't been bothered much at that time.I will get the dates
as soon as they come out. :)

I willl do that for sure if I can't talk my wife and kids into going. It's always nice to have someone to ride/talk with on those long trips and believe me if I ride with you it will be a loooong trip  ;D j/k Seriously though once it gets closer to time we can figure something out if I'm on my own, it will save us both a bit of cash on gas. If you end up riding your bike though your own your own, I know we are all friends on here but there are some things I just won't do with another guy :)

Pappy you probably have about as much chance of winning then as the people buying the tickets.

It's real hard quitin a job after 20 years and having 5 weeks vacation and startin a new job and only having 2 weeks. Hey Pappy, this is complete off the train of the conversation, but I just thought of a bowyer contest that might be fun at the TN Classic--Blind ring chasing wood identification.  The Bowyers are blindfold and has to scrape/chase a ring on a piece of wood to try to ID it just by feel.  The bowyer who correctly identifies the most pieces of wood wins.

Its best to camp if you can.  :) If anyone wants info on the motels let me know,I have the names and numbers. :) This is shaping up to be bigger that ever,I don't know if I can stand that much
fun. ;) :)

Just wondering if there was any place close by we could make a rock run for knapping? or if any good areas we could do some searching for points?

Correction, Mr. Destructo...The only "cricks" we have around here are cricks in the neck.  That thar stream of water was a creek or branch.  Up RyanO's way, they call them "cricks"  ;)  ;D
I don't reckon I've ever been to Pappy's place when it didn't rain or snow or precip one way or another.

Am I going to be able to keep my truck close to my tent? I know some places you have to park in a different area. Reason I am asking is you guys got me wondering about the rain. I am going to be in a tent and if I end up with a crick flowing through my tent, I have a hard shell on the back of my truck and would have no problem putting my air mattress in the back of the truck an sleeping in the  bed of the truck.

Like Eddie said, Keenan, the weather is really predictable. It's gonna rain like a cow pissing on a flat rock. The whole time. ;D We even had a tornado touched down nearby a couple years ago for variety. I have never regretted shelling out the money for a good tent. I've stayed dry every year so far. :)

Pappy, I'd really like to come to the classic but as I mentioned before, I'm booked the weekend of May 1st.  But it seems there's quite a few folks coming early.  I might could be there Saturday April 24th or Sunday April 25th and hang out, lend a hand, socialize, swap yarns until maybe Wednesday.  Would that be ok?

By my calculations we are about 2200 miles away and and it would take about 36 hrs. to drive one way. ::) Seems that we can cut the travel time to around 8 hrs flight after 4 hr drive to PDX plus a two hr drive from LuLyn's sisters place in Kentucky.  Now to figure out how to get three sets of bows, quivers, and arrows there in one piece. Then how to get a truck load of staves, rocks and other suplies home :-\  Cant let the wood hoarder have it all ;D

There are 3 things you can absolutely be sure of happening at the classic.
1.) You will get wet.
2.) You will have a blast.
3.) The wood ........ will swindle you out of a stick or three of wood.  ;D

You know I'll be there Pappy.  ;)  ;D

There should be a photo of the little pink cammo bow that I made for Minicalendargirl around someplace.
Does anyone know if there were any other bows made from it?

It was from 3 years ago I believe I wasn't there either but heard enough about it, and I believe the consenus was that it wasn't ash.

Justin went to Marie's(Calendergirl) house and removed a few trees,  loaded them in his truck and brought them back to Pappy's farm. We split into staves them there at the Classic. One trunk was unidentified so we called it Marie's ash. We decided to try to make bows from it. It turned out to be pretty sorry bow wood...unless it has improved with age.  ::)

Pappy, Like everyone else I'm getting excited about the Tennessee Classic I got a email from John Cook (cookwood) reminding me to save his spot tucked in by my trailer and Ray (fiddle) Johnson, just got off the phone with me talking about what bow he wants to build this year. It sounds like I need to come two weeks before the shoot just to reserve my spot that I've had the last few years. Won't it be wonderful to see all the folks again?

Eddie, that's great to hear that John Pruitt might be at the Classic, he would fit in so well with bow building and flint knaping . Ray will probably give ya shout out himself , he is so excited to go to the Classic again.  Who ain't excited ?? I have never seen so much talent in one place and their willingness to help others, Yea Mullet that includes you too. ha ha.

Thanks Pappy, I love gravel, big gravel, small gravel all kinds of gravel.. Ray, John and Maw and Me share the same spot I park parallel to the Creek and Ray parks parallel to me and John sneaks in by us. that leaves just enough room for Maw to have a small fire pit to cook her road kill.

Pappy our plans on using an rv may not work out and we are considering sending our Tipi down there to stay in instead. Is it possible to get some tipi poles close by there? They don't have to be fancy or peeled just functional. Would need 14  2 -3"inch butts and 16-18 feet long. If it to much of a pain don't worry about it will just buy a tent or something. Lulyn just thought it's be nicer if we had our Tipi.

Thanks Pappy and Shannon and whoever else may end up helping on this. 2-3 inches on the butt end is normal and one that is slightly larger for the lift pole (3-4) The size on the top end isn't that important.  Thanks again.

David, Don't let these guys get you in trouble.  The wright approach can work miracles. Remember relationships are about the journey and constant courtship.  So hear is a proven plan for your birthing the primitive desires. This takes a slow simmer approach.
First most women respect and admire the pioneer women and often will be open to the whole remote cabin get away in the wilderness while curled up next to their man in front of the fire. This fantasy vision number 1.  Let that one simmer for a while and and locate a local Forest Service rustic cabin rental for the weekend get away.  (After married of coarse)  No phones, TV, computers and rustic as possible.  If this goes well, you are moving in the right direction towards the primitive life style ;D    Look up some of the very nice Native buckskin dresses on Ebay and let her know how good she'd  look in a dress like that.  Once that vision takes root in her mind it's only a short step to chasing each other around in the tipi. ;D >:D
Once she is in the bucksin dress she will know how comfortable they are and the only place she will feel confortable wearing it is at rendezvous. ;D

This here is a pioneering lady if you ask me. I predict it wont be too difficult to get her out camping. She might even like hunting too!!!! Never can tell!  ;D

David, david, david,  Poor boy, we're trying to help and you're not paying attention. Now, what Keenan said might work if you want to start this relation out spending money. You know what I'm talking about, renting cabins and all. That's not necessary and a lot of added expense. You know ; wine, strawberries in chocolate and all that crap.

What we, and I'm talking about advice from older gentleman that have been happily married for a looong time is, it is cool and a positive thing that Gayle has that pioneer spirit. And that sex thing you were kinda alluding too well it probally is different, ya'll are from the West Coast.  But what you need to work on is when ya'll are in that wagon, pioneering away, you have to establish who is driving that old Conestoga.

If you want , I'll talk to Gayle for ya. ;)

EDDIE! NO NO NO!!!! ;D :o

By the way! We all know you may be driving the wagon but Kathy is sittin there with the whip to keep you in line!  ;D

Just wait till I get her into archery. She's going to give Eddie a run for his money on the range! Probably shoot better than I do. That not hard since I never get any practice in.  :'(

I'd would've chimed in sooner but I just found the post, and it took me awhile to read the first 19 pages, the wife and I are coming in wed night, we're staying at Jon Prices place this year ,I'll miss the river that ran through under our tents last year as well as the tree that went down in the woods not far from where we camped. I have to figure out how to fit some wood in the Grand Prix, I figure if I cut a hole in the back seat into the trunk it'll work, either that or I better learn to splice billets. I can't wait to see everyone.
I see Dana hasn't got any takers for riding with him, don't be afraid people, he was a pleasure to travel with, the ride home was a little chilly up on the roof of his truck due to all the wood he brought home but hey, a wh*** is a wh***. Just kiddin man it was a good time.

VB...my 2000 Grand Prix has a door that Opens into the Trunk behind the center Armrest in the Back Seat....you might check it out ...maybe Yours does too... ;)....thats how I have gotten all kinds of wood Home from Home Depot and Lowes.... ;D....and I do miss the Creek running behind the Tent...and the sound of Rain on the Roof....don't get to hear that here too often!

Mike, I already cut the hole in the seat, and then I found the door into the trunk, man, a day late and a dollar short. just kidding. I wish mine(2004) had the fold down seat or a reach through, my last car did.

Pappy, It looks like me and you are in real trouble now. David went and told on us. He told Gayle we were giving him a hard time and it wasn't nice. Now I'm getting threats on Facebook from Gayle threatening to disrupt the wonderfull, long marriage I've had with some of that West Coast Philosophy. I tried to explain to Gayle he was getting some pretty darn good advice from guy's with many years of experience and there was no need for him to go tattling.

:D :D :D Heck just reading all this has been a kick,,,,and somewhat concerning. Thoughts about Lulyn getting to know all of you better might be not be good. ::)  Especially if she gets talking to Marie and Sarah. My fear is that a little of that spring water and Lulyn might start telling stories. Don't need anymore nick names floating around and after watching Tiller getting branded,,,,,,well guess that was to be expected conssidering the source, he smelled so sweet out at the Glass Buttes people were trying to rub him down with cow pies. >:D

Actually we are getting really excited. It really is going to be neat to meet all the friends that I've come to know through this site. For us, this is the salt of the earth, and the friends we've made through this sport over the years, has caused of to be drawn to it all the more.

What David said,we have a lot of tools and benches but it's first come,so By Friday and Sat. the stuff get pretty thin, It takes me a couple of weeks after the shoot just to get all the stuff gathered back up.GregB ,Big A and myself are there to help most of the time but it's so busy there is no way we could do it without all the guys from PA,they are more than willing to help and sometimes I feel bad cause they are helping and don't get time to work on there own stuff,We really appreciate it Greg and Big A about went crazy the first few years trying to do it all there self and it seems after Thursday
I am pulled in all directions. Come on down I am sure you will enjoy it.Some of the best selfbowyers in the country will be there and more than willing to help and advise. :) :)

Josh got it about right, depending on what you plan on building and where you are at.If you plan on debarking and chasing growth rings a draw knife would be nice,if you plan on getting something there a lot are already passed that point. Just bring what you have and I am sure if you need something special we will come up with it,another good idea is to put you name on it,not worried about someone stealing it but sometimes things get lost in the scuffle.  :) :) Knoxville is a about 4 hours I think. :) Depending on how law abiding you are. ;) ;D ;D

I try to be a law-abiding East Tennessean, but then sometimes my ancestry gets ahold of me driving around the hills :)  I can usually make it to Nashville in 2hrs, 45min, and Clarksville is (I believe) only a 30min drive to the exits, so that should be no problems.  One more question (you can tell I'm a newbie), will there be staves for sale there, or do I need to bring my own?

There will be staves, Pappy will have some hickory staves already roughed out, Gary Davis, and yazoo will have a boat load of osage between them :)

Thanks for the warm invite :)  I'll be coming from Knoxville, so it's not that far of a drive.  If I were to bring a couple basic tools with me, what would you say the most important are?  A drawknife?  Thanks!

Dave

Drawknife, PENCIL, flexible measuring tape, rasp, chainsaw file, couple of scrapers... That should get you started..

I hate to ask so many obvious questions, but what size/type of drawkinfe do you suggest?  I went to my local carving shop today and saw one for $110 which surprised me a little!  Also, what about rasp size/type?  Thanks!

Oh and dmassphoto, don't spend 110 dollars on a drawknife, make sure you check out the flea markets and farmers trading posts first... I got an older used one and only paid 25 dollars for it and it looks way better made than the new ones I see for sale now.  Just had to knock a little rust off it and fix the bevel and she was good as new.... The handles were already worn smooth from the heavy use it got from its previous owner too.  Make sure to look for a used one before you shell out that kind of money, they dont make them like they used to.   :)

For anyone that hasn't been involved in the Self Bow Challenge, Twin Oaks will have roughed in hickory bows that have been straightened on forms with some reflex added. There will also be roughed in osage bows available through Gary Davis and Yazoo with assistance given by them in getting the osage bows to a shooting stage. Several Twin Oaks members (including Pappy ;)), and probably some other PA folks will be helping as needed during the tillering process of the hickory bows. We have a good many bench/vises available on a first come first serve basis. We also provide scrappers and will have tillering strings for sale. In the past it can get pretty hectic with a dozen or so making bows at anyone time and just a few folks helping, so be patient please :)

Like King Ron said, the actual contest starts on Thursday with the bows being at a semi-floor tillered stage without string notches cut in. But for my 2 cents worth, I personally feel the emphasis of this self bow making event is not a contest so much as a introduction to making an all wooden bow and getting new people interested and excited in this great hobby! It's an opportunity to have "hands on" experience with some guidance given by experienced bowyers...not to mention some good comradarie! It's all in fun, no need to feel stressed but just enjoy yourself. Most folks in past years if they started Thursday or Friday have got their bows to a shooting stage allowing them to shoot the course for score against their fellow students of the Self Bow Challenge. All particiapants will be asked to enter the Self Bow Challenge which includes help tillering the bow and getting to shoot the course. Typically most of the bows aren't completely finished during the weekend. Usually additional sanding/ finish work, grip, and sometimes sealing the bow is still left to be completed after going home. The entire process to a fine finished bow like displayed in the PA forum bow section is typically to lengthy to be entirely completed by an inexperienced person in such a short time.

I hope this may help answer some questions to any folks new to the Classic that are interested in taking part in the Self Bow Challenge.

Standing up allows the cork to dry out and then air reach the wine which causes oxidation. Best to store wine with the wine in contact with the cork. I made a wine rack that holds around 75 bottles laying on their sides, unfortunately it is empty.  :(

Well I got the bottle out tonight and looked at it. The cork looks wet to me, at least down in the neck. It's only about a 1/4" from the wine,so maybe the shutting of the fridge door would shake enough up on the cork to keep it wet?

No matter, it's Maries anyhow, she can drink it or pour it out whichever she likes. 8)

Heck we can cook with it if she don't want to drink it. Its probably OK,save it for the second bottle and she will never know the difference. ;) ;D ;D We can always mix it with a good bottle to add
volume. ;) >:D

That's right Marie, all the wine I've brought to the Classic over the past several years was wine I made before 2007. Back when I was really into making it, I had made over one hundred gallons in one year before. One gallon equals five regular wine bottles! ;) I may have to get back into it at some point in the future. To many iron's in the fire for me right now.

Timo, probably is okay. It may not be as good as it once was. The wine level being within a 1/4" of the cork helps cut down on the possible amount of exposure to oxygen.

You guys definitely are out of line in regards to Marie's potential of being a "booze hound". Just because she habitially carries a cork remover everywhere she goes (she gave me one during the 2008 Classic when I couldn't find one in the cabin!) doesn't necessarily mean she's a "booze hound" or wino. She is just a nice person, and carry's a cork remover solely for the purpose of sharing it whenever the need arises! I mean if you think about it, I'm sure we've all at some time or the other have been asked during an archery event if we had a cork remover...right? ;D

Pappy I can't tell you how much I wish I was gonna be there.  I wanted to thank you again for the time you spent with Greg and I a week ago last Monday.  We spent hours over the next days trying to figure out what we enjoyed most.  Greg is still leaning towards the flint knapping.  Heck, I had come to see about the bows and left with an overwhelming urge to brain tan the two elk hides in the freezer.  I also keep thinking about the biggest bag of turkey feathers I ever laid eyes on.  And a pile of firewood that still blows this desert dwellers mind.  If I had been thinking I would have asked for a few pieces to smoke some ribs over while I was dreaming of Tennessee.

So have fun and for all you first timers, if you have never seen Pappy's place prepare yourself for something you cannot prepare for.  I know the angels are busy guarding the gates into Eden but they left a back door open in Northern Tennessee.

Thanks again Pappy and if there is anyway possible I hope to see you next year.

Mike

Tina, can't wait to see you and share a sip from that jar with you.!  We will be selling womens' and kids' apparel this year.  Kind of a test market.  I always want to know what the women think, too.  I LOVE feedback!   I will be getting 3 big boxes of items in a few days and I will let you all know what to expect.  I sure get excited to see the P.A. support, and if I understand right purchases will give people "chance" to win a bow by KnightD this year.   ;D  ;D  C

i am hoping the HUGE storms that come this weekend are getting them all out of the way for the Classic!  ;D  Of course what's the classic with out some rain.   ::)

I will tell you the story about the name of Sticky at the Classic.  ;D I would love to win another, can't never have enough bows on the wall.

You know that it will rain, but that's OK I order new water proof boots and Barry(Knappy due) gave me a good hat, bring it on sister.

No he didn't quite get the entire routine figured out...each time he got to the moon walk part, he kept backing into one of the bows in a vice! ;D

I don't know if he was wishing for Jeanie to pop out, or for Wonder Woman to wrap one of her bow strings around him and see if she could get the truth out of him! ;)
